The Clear Case For The Queensland Government To Introduce IQ Testing – On Itself.

There was a sudden and unforgivable swerve from buffoonery to bastardy during the week, when Anna Palaszczuk and her chief bureaucrat injected racism deep into the corona virus lexicon. The Magpie is one of the 100% of Queenslanders deeply offended.

After all these years, Messagebank finally gets the message. The ‘Pie was on the money again: as predicted a month ago, Townsville gets a new deputy mayor. The Magpie explains why the number two role is likely to change dramatically in this council term.

Trump goes all Jonestown, but instead of Kool Aid, he wants American’s to inject bleach to defeat Covid-19 – because he thinks it’s a ‘good idea’. We look at the incredible news conference that has dumbfounded the world.

And back on the local scene, will it be a world record? A 400-space, six level car park is to be built in Townsville – to be finished in just 16 months, it will be built by just 12 tradesmen.

And the sobering counterpoint to the continuing manic and dishonest cheerleading from the Astonisher’s about the city’s recovery prospects.

The Tangerine Terrorist Sets A New Benchmark In Foaming Lunacy

Surely somewhere in Manchuria, the Chinese have got a brainwashed American GI good to go … only being held back by the international travel ban.

Screen Shot 2019-08-26 at 12.28.52 am

At one stage during a stunning news conference last Thursday, Donald Trump, pointing to his head, said, quote: ‘I’m not a doctor. But I’m, like, a person that has a good you-know-what.’ The hand gesture was a necessary explanation that in the mummy-speak of this recklessly retarded, deeply damaged and mentally failing adult, the you-know-what referred to his rumoured brain. This disclaimer not withstanding, Trump recommended that doctors should consider injecting people with bleach to cure corona virus.

This was yet another stumblebum attempt to regain traction for the President;’s one strong point … the American economy. And he has clearly opted for purely political and self-preservation reasons to risk lives to get the economy ‘open’ again at any price, putting fresh meaning into the mugger’s traditional dictum ‘your money or your life’.  Bentley think Lady Justice has received the tradtional Trump treatment.

Justice flat small

And this Guardian column by the razor sharp Marina Hyde contains this 2 minute  video of Trump’s statement, but hang in until the very end to get a real measure of the man – his last few words beggar belief. (It’s less than two minutes).

This extraordinary suggestion on live television to audience that contained a fair chunk of those fatally gullible and ignorant Americans who slavishly follow the Tangerine Terrorist, caused enough of a ruckus that Trump lamely came back soon afterwards claiming he was just being sarcastic. Trouble with that is, chum(p), even if it were true, the damage which may yet come to light, had already been done. While he wasn’t actually wrong , the cure would be permanent and terminal, and they’ll soon run out of stockpiled Darwin awards. His wackily wicked diagnosis caused a panicked avalanche of warnings from health professionals, pleading with the general population to ignore the President’s latest brain dump.

Screen Shot 2020-04-25 at 10.49.12 am

We will have our regular gallery of American reaction to the President’s week later in the blog, but for now, take a peak at The Lyin’ King Tweets Tonight, the lyrics are sharp enough to draw blood.

Like Corona Virus, Insulting Stupidity Knows No Borders …

… as Queenslanders found out to their dismay this week.

What sort of disconnect from reality does it take, during a health crisis AND on the single most nationally binding day of the year, for Anna Palaszczuk choose to blunder into blatant racism.

Dr Jeanette Young Chief Health Officer5b4e7d22a57b73ec77a10d1398f564d8

And make no mistake, although the words came from the gormless bureaucrat Jeanette Young, the state’s chief medical officer, this buck lands firmly on the premier’s desk.

Four pilots from the Warbirds group at Caboolture, who have traditionally piloted their WW11 planes in flyovers of four Anzac ceremonies in the south-east, were refused permission this year because of corona virus restrictions. This despite the fact that the single-seater planes are housed in for separate hangars and do not require the pilots to congregate before or after the flight. But brain-dead bureaucracy prevailed, despite multiple appeals from public figures, including Broadwater MP David Crisafulli and broadcaster Alan Jones.

But Health supremo Jeanette Young’s nonsensical reasoning for not allowing an exception severely undermined confidence in her overall decision-making. She went outside her medical discipline and into the political arena of group social psychology when she said: “There is no health risk for someone getting in a plane, of course there isn’t,” Dr Young said. “But the health risk is if one person does that, then someone else will say ‘well maybe there’s no health risk if I go on a drive through, if I do this’.“If you looked at each individual thing in isolation you would say ‘yep that’s fine and that’s fine and that’s fine’.

“But add them all up together and you’ve got a major problem.”

So looking at four planes on Anzac Day will give us an irresistible urge, a green light, to go for a drive? Madam, no other way to put it, you’re a fucking idiot. Putting aside the fact that the separation rules have been Pythonesque in conception and policing, Young and her boss Palaszczuk three weeks ago, gave permission for 80 people – 70 more than mandated – to attend an indigenous funeral in Mackay’ because the deceased’s standing in the community made it ‘a significant cultural occasion’. Sure, we had a bit of grumble, but most of us didn’t want to disrespect aboriginal culture and make a big deal out of a lily-livered political cave-in.

BUT HERE’S THE THING … surely to Gough, Dr Young/ Premier Palaszczuk, Anzac Day, when we honour out tens of thousands of war dead and our returned servicemen, is a significant ‘cultural occasion’? One respected by just about 100% of the population and not just 3% of our original Australians. And an exercise of respect, AT NO GOVERNMENT EXPENSE, high in the air and done with ABSOLUTELY ZERO RISK OF INFECTION should surely be allowed on the same grounds?

Message for Anna Palaszczuk … yesterday, we said Lest We Forget … come October, rest assured, we will remember.

Why The Direction Of The TCC Could Change With A New Deputy Mayor

Molachino and magpie Screen Shot 2020-03-04 at 3.03.28 pm

Clr Mark Molachino was elected to the be deputy dog (no, The ‘Pie is not suggesting that makes Mayor Mullet anything other than, as usual, a dill) on Thursday. Interesting to note that he was elected unopposed by the other councillors, because it appears after all these years, Les Messagebank Walker got the message … he’d been called out by his colleagues as the lazy grifter he has always been, and with The Mullet doing a final lap of honour, succession is one everyone’s mind. Oh, she will deny it for reasons outlined below, but take it from the well informed ‘Pie, she will voluntarily put herself out to pasture on or by 2024.

Mayor Mullet is not, for the moment anyway, a lame duck, but that status may change if she plays Malice In Blunderland once too often this term.

So here’s a very plausible reading of how we will be entertained by Walker Street in the coming months and (shudder) years.

Molachino, an ambitious bloke without a doubt, is unencumbered by any binding political ties, and ironically, that includes to the Jenny Hill Party – which is what it legally is. So he will be riding that well known nag, Self Interest, the greatest trier in any field. And the time will arrive, possibly not too far down the track, when he will count numbers and start carrying or defeating motions that suit his interests when he has to go to the polls. Such motions may well arise when sponsored by a mayor who now tactically and typically doesn’t have to even pretend to give a fuck … in other words, same old, same old.

Now Jenny Hill is not a complete klutz when it comes to vicious politicking, but when everyone else reasons she won’t be around next time, there could be a move to suck up to the new leader, creating a shift in the balance of influence. Molachino is said to popular among his colleagues, evidenced by his unopposed appointment. He may well not be the impatient type, but he certainly will not want any of Hill’s many and impending political albatrosses hanging around his neck come poll time.

It will be interesting to see how the Astonisher’s iditor blunders into any Hill/Molachino dust-ups. The ‘Pie is stocked up on the popcorn and Pinot Noir for the fun.

One Thing Hasn’t Changed At The Astonisher

That is, it’s unremitting role as cheerleader for unrealistic real estate forecasting. The latest in no biggy, but is symptomatic.

Screen Shot 2020-04-25 at 10.30.55 pm

Multi-million dollar tick of approval? A sale that neither creates nor guarantees not one single job, but is touted as a punt, a risk taken on Townsville by one of the big boys – in this case, Castlerock Finance Group.

Now, nothing wrong with this sale, people may do with their own money whatever they please – although some believe the Verde block was over-priced.

But a punt, a risk? Hardly.

Verdi Tower the “Tower of Power ” as local bizoids joke about it as its full of State Government departments – State Development , Premiers Office , Jobs Qld – so basically seat polishers. The sale price is based on rental income and Government leases are the best as they aren’t very good negotiators, so pay too much , good yearly reviews , office sit empty and you still get rent . When you negotiate on a property like that you pay based on the length of the leases , you calculate guarantees into the buy price if a tenant doesn’t re-new their lease .

So this is a tick of approval for the Queensland Treasury, not Townsville. As previously said, good luck to all involved in the sale, but up-selling it as a ‘tick of approval’ for Townsville is peddling the continuing line in real estate fantasy in the Bulletin.

And then there’s this, which isn’t journalism, it’s jingoism.

Screen Shot 2020-04-20 at 11.43.53 am

So The Magpie started looking for some balance, and found it in an unexpected guise.

Why The Internet Is Like Forest Gump’s Box Of Chocolates

Like Forest Gump and his chockies, surfing around the internet, one never knows what you’re going to get.

On Linkedin, The Pie came across the familiar name of Warwick Powell, he of the Sister City Partnership, and the very clever Beefledger export tracking system. And one of Peter Newey’s favourite bogeymen.

Warwick Powell

Warwick Powell

The ‘Pie always enjoyed Powell’s regular articles in DUO magazine, which ceased when the magazine extended its regional coverage. Powell’s articles were always well informed, well written if somewhat too long sometimes, and always had sensible suggestions for the region.

Mr Powell (actually that’s inter alia Adjunct Professor Powell at QUT nowadays) is also spokesman for the developers of the proposed equestrian center and resort at Bluewater. (And yes, yes, we know we know, it is also THAT Warwick Powell of youthful indiscretion, from the Shepherdson Inquiry, but he and we have all moved on from that chapter.)

Mr Powell told his Linkedin readers he found the Grattan Institute Report on the corona virus impact on Australian employment ‘sobering reading’. But, in stark contrast to the Bulletin, he did the maths (which is probably why the Bulletin didn’t even try) and painted a certainly ‘sobering’ projection of where we stand as a city.

He wrote:

I did the analysis of the Grattan numbers applied locally.

I have just finished reading the full GI analysis. It is sobering reading. While it applies its method to estimate impacts as a whole, across the entirety of the national economy, Grattan’s industry by industry estimates provide a basis for estimating what the localised impacts mean in different parts of the country.

I have applied the estimated industry impacts of Grattan’s “preferred method” onto Townsville SA4’s February 2020 employment by industry numbers. Over 30,000 people projected to lose their jobs in Townsville, as a first round impact, according to Grattan Institute analysis. The results are in the table.

Crikey, Really?

Mater car parkScreen Shot 2020-04-25 at 11.16.54 pm

12 jobs, eh? If this is true, at least there’ll be a hospital and plenty of medical care near-by for these blokes, they’ll be more buggered than Alan Jones butler.

And just a thought … how’re all those wonderful plans for the Townsville University Hospital multi-storey carpark, that we have been paying a minimum of five bucks a throw for for several years now? Surely they’ve got enough in the kitty to keep good their promises.

The Latest From The Land Of The Tangerine Terrorist

Proof that Trump is a menace during this epidemic, he continues to make people smack their foreheads regularly, evidence here, the bloke in the background should know better, it’s Dr Fauci.

And, from Trump’s ‘open back up  now’ supporters, this kinda says it all.

Now to help you unsee that top image, here’s the regular round-up.

… and with Kim ill, and if Trump loses in November, there might be an opening for him in North Korea … sort of made for the role.

Finally Back To Local Stuff , DOPPLEGANGER! A Moment For Those Who Know Him

The Magpie was watching the ABC YV news earlier in the week, and in the middle of all the droning on about the virus, he suddenly sat up with curiosity … what was old Magpie mate John ‘Mother’ Hubbard doing talking about it … and in Melbourne too.

Hub doppleScreen Shot 2020-04-20 at 8.19.56 pmWell, turned out that it was Hub at all, but this bloke.

Hub dopple 2Screen Shot 2020-04-20 at 8.22.22 pm

Send the pics across to Hub, who replied somewhat sniffily that there was ‘some resemblance’ … one got the impression he felt he had weathered a bit better than Mr Mason, so just to stay friends, here’s a picture of the Hub ….

That’s another week survived, lots to talk about throughout the week, have your say in comments, they can be great fun … sometimes. Hop into the fray and have your say. Hmmm, that rhymes … so does this …

Have some of the Palaszczuk Government Ministers worked out Queensland Chief Health Officer Janette Young isnt running for State election in October because while Miss Young was trying to explain her theory for not approving the warbirds flyover , Corelee Orourke,s press release late friday afternoon was about the possible re-opening of cafes/ resturants / pubs May 7th . Also on the State , Aaron Harper and Scott Stewart think its a good idea to throw $200 mil to an airline the administrators state has $6.8 bil in debt and getting a loan of $200 mil from its frequent flyer program didnt make a dent . A good reflection of both Aaron and Scotts lack of understanding and inexperience in business but dont worry ,its not their $ . The definition of insanity is when you do the same thing over and over expecting a different result so i cant wait to see Mayor Mullets T.C.C. “Covid -19 Taskforce ” makeup . The usual seat polishing bureaucratic sycophants with Mayor Hill Chair as usual who have done such a great job with the Dam , cbd , strand wave pool , battery plant .

    • Peter Sandery says:

Mike, Aaaron Harper was a para medic BMLA(Before Member of Legislative Assembly) hence his lack of basic commercial understanding pales into insignificance when compared to Scott Stewart’s who was a teacher; might explain some of the strange voting patterns displayed by Townsville voters

  2. Avid- reader-first-time-writer says:

Hello magpie, maybe a quick edit on the Carpark comments, it’s for the Mater on Fulham road, not JCU hospital

  3. The Wulguru Wonder says:

Just watch the reaction of Dr Birx from Trump’s Coronavirus Task Force, to his disinfection injection suggestion at the briefing.

    • The Magpie says:

Yup saw that, Trump brought her on board to counter balance Dr Fauci’s sanity, but even she has started to see the swinging door that keeps belting her head on.

      • Achilles says:

Once the pale rangger has seen it, she’ll find out its a revolving door.

      • The Wulguru Wonder says:

Yes Pie, I think we should all be thankful for Dr Fauci, who seems to be the one voice of sanity on Trumpet’s taskforce. Surely he must just want to throw it all in after hearing Trump’s incorrect and downright dangerous thought fart ramblings, but he probably thinks that if he did quit Trump would just replace him with a completely unqualified yes-man arse licker and then there would be absolutely no voice of reason or science being heard on the taskforce. Dr Fauci is really taking one for the team by being there.

    • Peter Sandery says:

Perhaps it’s my growing senility but I have listened to the Trump speech mentioned here, several times, and have not heard him say that people should inject themselves with disinfectant. I stand to be corrected by my betters though, if you can.

      • The Magpie says:

Your point is valid, up to a point … the suggestion was implicit though, because he said the use of bleach injections was, he thought a ‘good idea’ worth looking into. Coming from a president whose followers shouldn’t be allowed outdoors without a helmet, a wink is as good as nod to them. But it is a measure of the brain-washing this dangerous twerp has achieved that intelligent, sane folks like yourself think it important to argue by-the-letter semantics. Unless you are suggesting his ramble was quite OK, harmless, and we’re all fake news.

  4. Dazza says:

Pie I see Randy Rainbow has done a tune based on a spoonful of sugar/Clorox that plays to Trumps medical advise. Worth a watch.

  5. Cantankerous but happy says:

Molachino is certainly ambitious, dont doubt that for a minute, and achieves this by crawling and grovelling to those around him, he is very good at it and certainly a polar opposite to Jenny Hill. Unfortunately for Townsville though it doesn’t mean he would be any better than Jenny Hill, he has no business skills, zero industry experience and has never created wealth or opportunity for anyone other than himself, so more of the same only delivered a different way. The only bright side to this is that a rank amateur like Molachino will hopefully encourage someone with real talent to step forward at the next council election.

    • Alahazbin says:

Nah! CBH, The ‘Mooney Machine’ is just cranking up.

    • Peter Sandery says:

And don’t us residents of Division4 know that in spades. Alas we could not do anything about it because not one resident had the civic mindedness to stand against him. He doesn’t even live in the division and purports to be our representative in a LOCAL government.

      • The Wulguru Wonder says:

Obviously the Astonisher forgot to include the photograph in Saturday’s article about our new Deputy Mayor.

“New deputy Cr Mark Molachino said he had “big shoes to fill” after taking over from Les Walker”

  6. Achilles says:

Trump should use Harpic as its slogan best reflects his condition.

  7. CEO of Crap says:

My understanding is that the Verdi deal was over 12 months in the pipeline and waiting on renewal of Government leases prior to unconditional. Hardly a sign of local business confidence, far from it as the deal started way prior to current economic issues. These types of assets always have a buyer, large investment managers need assets with a decent return to park their clients money into. I stopped reading Powell’s academia reports a long time ago. Even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

  8. One legged tap dancer says:

    What a relief.
Jenny Hill, of Townsville Disastrous Committee fame, is going to head up Townsville’s COVID-19 task force.
The good folks of Idalia, and all the other suburbs flooded by her expert management of Ross River Dam, will be doing cartwheels.

  9. Jatzcrackers says:

Pie, the role of Mayor in a town, sorry city, the size of 200,000 people, shouldn’t necessarily be a full time one.
It appears that some of the local councillors, who have their snout in the trough for a lazy $100k a year, have another job/business that they’re involved with. I mean, how much door knocking can one do ?

Get rid of the possum lined coat of many colours and the Mr T type jewellery plus most of the pomp and circumstance that goes with the bullshit ‘Mayor’ title.

Townsville desperately need a business thinking/trained leader who job is to steer, not dictate. Some who understands commerce, spreadsheets, fiscal planning etc.

No doubt it would be a hard task to find an individual with business acumen and the skills to delegate the required areas of council, however with all of the computerisation of systems surely there’s a business type individual out there who could run the show on a professionally managed part time basis !

    • Not the ECQ says:

Jatz if you know so much about who/what we need and how much to pay them why didn’t you find this person three months ago?

      • Jatzcrackers says:

Yes, I know ! Shutting the gate after the horse has done a runner…or something like that ! Just a bit of thinking outside of the square, which I can tell you, I’m not good at ! I’m pretty sure in days gone by that Mayors and the like we’re usually successful business people !
And yes, I can hear you…doesn’t that leave the door open to corruption, inside deals, jobs for mates etc….but we have that now with a full time, non effective one !

        • Alahazbin says:

“In days gone by, mayors and the like were successful business people”
Jatz, both Captain Snooze & Mayor Radiance were bloody ex school teachers. Says a lot about the voting public and how gullible they are.
Just look at the 3 current MLA’s. Same again.

    • I’ll be plucked says:

Well Crackers, the next opportunity for us voters will be the State election on October. After that, nothing for a fair while!

Wonder which LNP female candidate will be taking on Harpic in Thuringowa (two blokes pre-selected so far, so a woman will be a fair chance for the nomination)?

  10. Sir Rabbittborough says:

    Don’t download the corona app.

    Its unhygienic.

It requires a Bluetooth handshake. And the bluetooths are a faction of the mason- illuminati

  11. Cantankerous but happy says:

A blast from the past with John Hubbard there Pie, haven’t heard that name in quite a while, always remember years ago thinking to myself, someone just got fired for being too successful, typical of Townsville.

  12. Boss hog says:

Word on Walker St is Mr Chiodo has decided to stay put for a little while longer.

      • The Stasi says:

He was never leaving; that rumour was clearly made up claptrap.

        • The Magpie says:

And you know this how? Chiodo may have changed his mind, for whatever reason, but The Magpie’s information came from a most solid source. Besides, you might consider that the ‘go’ decision isn’t entirely in the CEO’s hands.

          • The Stasi says:

            Yes, Magpie.

          • The (Barely) Civil Engineer says:

Often it’s easier for people to leave council with honour intact when there is an election rather than wait for later when an excuse has to be manufactured.

Magpie, your sources are saying what my colleagues are hearing.

        • Achilles says:

Maybe he floated that intention because he thought that the Mullet was a goner.

Which could mean the new broom might expose some “creative accounting” with traceable finger prints on them.

But now that the secret service is back in, the book keeping can safely stay under wraps.

I’m not implying any malfeasance on his part but turning a blind eye is still complicity.

Long bow , I know, but hey , the Argentinians waited 150 years to have a crack at the Falklands and there was that WMD’s pretext for the Iraq invasion too. And both cases had fascism in common.

Not such a long bow after all.

    • The Stasi says:

Roger that DOK, we’re onto it.

  14. The (Barely) Civil Engineer says:

Looking at the Mater Hospital story, I suspect the Asonisher left out one critical word “effective”, as in “effective full-time jobs” or “EFT” which is the standard measure of employment.

Most projects reported these days count as an extra job every person who walks through the gates even once, giving the unbelievable totals we see for most projects.

Seems the Mater did their homework and added up the likely number of building hours and divided it by a 35 hour week to arrive at their final figure. Which is about right, the standard multiplier applied to job creation from government projects is something like 1.5 jobs per $1m.

  15. Old Tradesman says:

Time to buy some shares in the Gilded Rose Gold mine west of Townsville, apparently as reported in the regions favourite paper, it has the capacity to produce 60000 tons of gold per annum, at current market value with gold at $1700 per ounce, Australia’s financial woes will be over. Eat your heart out China.

    • The Magpie says:

The ‘Pie shall file that in the ever expanding Astonisher versus Maths file … the paper is copping a hiding at this stage. That file is now almost as big as the Astonisher versus English file.

60,000 tonnes? We could BUY China … except the Argies own the damn thing.

I am not sure what that is in trillions.

      • The Magpie says:

It’s a wonder Mullet, TEL and Colin Dwyer (who’s been promoted to ‘economic guru status in the Astonisher today) have tried to buy in.

      • TheOtherGuy says:

Mining uses troy ounces for gold – 32.1507oz per kg, just a small $318 billion difference in value.

        • Achilles says:

Yep that’s the old teaser, Which is heavier? an once of gold or an ounce of lead.

Two difference ounces, Troy and avoirdupois (bloody Paris Froggie) ounce.

    • Tin Foil says:

The story says clearly process 60k not produce 60k. Folks should calm down.

      • The Magpie says:

Yes, it does, me old dear, yes it does but that’s not the POINT.It appears you don’t get excited enough enough, Tinny Lid about simple English … the story says the mine has the capacity to ‘process 60000 tonnes of GOLD per annum’. Not ‘extract gold from 60,000 tonnes of ore’ or whatever.
Now, back to the iditor and see what he wants you to reply to now.

  16. One legged tap dancer says:

Notice that the Townsville Bulletin weekday editions have been reduced from 40 pages to 32 but no decrease in the paper price.

  17. Old Tradesman says:

How can Queensland be ranked sixth economically in Australia when we have most of the export minerals and primary production. Somebody should ask our three local galahas, the Julius Sumner question “why is it so”. But then we do have the most public servants.

    • Not the ECQ says:

Tradie, mining contributes about 8% of Australia’s GDP, agriculture about 3% – although there a bit more if you look at the value adding that takes place downstream from the farm. “Economically” other sectors like services and education account for so much more and that’s where the other states leave Queensland behind.

    • Cantankerous but happy says:

This is the same Govt who want businesses to start reopening and trading again, but are too stupid to work out people can’t return to work until their children can return to school, brainless dickheads.

  18. Mike Douglas says:

Do what i say not what i do . Hypocrisy of Mayor Mullet who wont load the Federal Government COVID-19 App because , “the data storage is managed by Amazon a U.S. Technology Company ” . Based on that theory , you wouldnt buy the Mayors Car outside of Townsville , you wouldnt be a director of a Company who takes work away from local Companies like LGAQ supposed “local buy ” . i know the Mayor says she isnt comfortable with technology but it appears she isnt up to speed Amazon Australia who employ over 300 Australians . Perhaps she needs to do an audit on all the Council assets because when it comes to cars /trucks/ computers / her phone she might learn something .

    • The Magpie says:

And she most certainly wouldn’t accept a US jolly paid for IBM, as she did a few years back.

      • Lord Howard Hertz says:

Could be wrong but doesn’t IBM (a foreign company) hold Townsville Council data? The same company that fucked up Queensland nurses pay a while back?

        • The Magpie says:

Anybody notice a small change in this tracking app? The name has been changed, from the creepy TraceTogether to the more guilt-inducing but virtue signalling COVIDsafe.

The consultant who came up with TraceTogether, a Big Brother name if ever there was one, needs to have its arse kicked til its nose bleeds. And the selling of the idea has been a PR nightmare, because there is the general view among a majority of Australians that ALL politicians are not to be trusted. Whatever would have induced a government to say they ‘had enlisted the help of the Australian Signals Directorate and the Australian Cyber Security Centre, as well as other industry partners, to check the veracity of the security measures in place’. ASD? ACSC? Two of the very organisations widely suspected (not always without reason) of internal chicanery of citizen privacy in the name of national security? And seem to regularly get information pinched by hackers?

Gimme a break. COVIDsafe is probably pretty harmless, but the selling of it has been gormless.

        • Plannit Townsville says:

LHH, right you are. IBM has access to a shit load to TCC data. Including electricity and building operations.

  19. The Magpie says:

Here’s a post in the interests of The Magpie’s devoted friends and followers down at the Astonisher. Forget toilet paper, you kids will want to stock up on pampers to avoid any embarrassing public moments when you read this … which you most certainly won’t read in any of your own august organs. 20. Mike Douglas says:

T.C.C. and Technology . New Councillors Suzi Batkovic / Liam Mooney / Sue Bloom are just blacked face images on the T.C.C. website with no email details . They did prioritise and changed deputy Mayor details .

      • Snitch says:

Is sesame street still on TV? If your looking for a picture of batkovic you could screenshot bigbird and get same result. Mrs snuffalufagus can be the mayor with all her imagination friends.

        • The Magpie says:

Think you might find that her team mates and/or the media have beaten you to that idea, The ‘Pie’s understanding is that she was sometimes called Big Bird in an affectionate joking manner in her playing days.

  21. Arthur Itis says:

On your topic regarding the maternalistic ova-reach by the Chief Medical Ova-lord and the Anzac Day Warbirds, Harry Day’s adage says it best:-
“Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of the wise” (PC adapted).
Following the go ahead of a funeral in Mackay, the following may well be added…..”and disregarded by the Woke”.
She may well include herself among the wise given her position, and rules are made to cater for the lowest common IQ denominator in society, but it is a level she herself fails to attain on these occasions and in the explanations offered.
(The relevance of Harry Day’s quote is that he was a well known and well regarded WW2 pilot)

    • The Magpie says:

“Rules are made to cater for the lowest common IQ denominator in society”.

So by that twisted logic, the little snots that steal cars and other criminals are the high IQ part of society, eh? Requiring only guidance?

      • Arthur Itis says:

Whoa, back up, cease, decist, shooting from the lip a bit there Pie (and Al), I agree with your thinking on the CMO, but you blokes are missing my point.
Society these days is host to a plethora of inane rules and regulations that impose unnecessary timewasting, restrictions on activities and expense on the general population. These come about for a variety of reasons but usually because some dickhead fucked up, found himself a smart arsed lawyer to argue some previously commonly viewed idiotic activity wasn’t covered in Clause 2.3 as a no no on a job site. Anyone who has been in business can attest to some rule, regulation, bylaw that is nonsensical with its roots in some stupid action or smart alec misinterpretation.
Now, Dr. Young in my view has adopted and applied the ‘low IQ in society’ approach in her Public do’s and don’ts (curtailments) but has failed to apply the “guidance” principle of Day’s adage concerning the Anzac Day cultural event, plus the obvious social distancing of the pilots. Stupid, stupid, low IQ thinking and ova-reach fuelled by ingrained blinkered ‘poor bugger me’ guilt.
You mention the little snots, high IQ? maybe?, they seem to be running rings around the Wokeys. Guidance…. there are some blokes (black and white, elders) working without fanfare and plaudits who are having some success with this approach.
In case you are wondering about the ova prefix, it is merely my attempt to help the femmo folk to demasculinise the English language.

        • The Magpie says:

The Magpie doesn’t indulge in the deep philosophical musings you are blest with – as apparently is someone who knows how to fly a plane. The ‘Pie simply reads language and interprets it by the rules traditionally laid down … you know, grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling, all that stuff. Perhaps if you gave a little more attention to that, it might stop readers from missing your point.

          • Arthur Itis says:

Rules for language? Another classic case of ‘the lowest common denominator’. That’s so 20th Century thinking Pie, the Education Department has seen to the dumbing down of that sometime ago, read any newspaper or blog

    • Alahazbin says:

Arthur, Dr a Young also stated the reasons the 80 people limit for the indigenous funeral was for cultural reasons. Well, if ANZAC day isn’t a cultural event, what is?

  22. Microsoftcock says:

They can stick their COVID tracking App up their ass. I don’t trust any Government. Never have and never will. And you can stick Bill Gates and Zuckerberg up their ass as well. Shysters and shonks. Zuckerberg already looks like he is the product of AI, or Data from Star Trek, The Next Generation.

  23. I’ll be plucked says:

Is Palmer trying to outdo Trump in the Dumb Fuc stakes? Buying 32 million doses of the anti-malaria drug was bad enough, but now huge ads claiming it is a treatment for the virus?

Now we have ‘TWO DUMB FUCS’ trying to be doctors and win ‘favour’ out of the pandemic. Both need to be arrested and placed in the looney bin (or any bin)!

  24. Persian Parfait says:

The theory doing the rounds at council HQ is that there’s no one in the current ranks up to snuff to replace Mr Mike as CEO. The problem is that opening the job up to external recruitment might open a big can or worms if an outsider is shown the real state of the books, especially given the ongoing and in depth independent audit of multiple state grants received by council.

    • Cantankerous but happy says:

Who would want the job, the fact that TCC is busted arse broke with debt to the eyeballs, which will only get worse. It won’t be long until councils will also be told they can’t sell people’s homes for unpaid rates and leave them on the street, they will be like banks and landlords and told to do their bit as well, TCC will be fucked.

      • The Magpie says:

Perhaps, certainly possible. But just as a matter of interest (seriously asking, not having a go Cankers) is there any info on how many homes have been sold to pay rate arrears in Townsville, in say the last 5 years?

        • Cantankerous but happy says:

Not many I would imagine Pie, but will have a dig. Most would try to work out a payment method rather than having the property sold, but knowing the council can’t force a sale of your property creates a different perspective to the conversation, and the type of communication TCC will be allowed to send out. The council rates will now go the the bottom of pile, particularly on rental properties, pay it forward as they say. For a lot of councils with moderate debt it won’t be an issue, but for TCC, it will be.

    • The (Barely) Civil Engineer says:

Hearing much the same Parfait. Doesn’t say much for the quality of the blow-ins council has been saddled with.

Inga and her ilk really only want to be at the trough, not actually contribute anything.

I would have put money on the Screaming Midget’s missus who has been dropped into NQROC and the Hospital Board previously based on her “experience” as a largely ineffectual Brisbane City Councillor, but they both seem to have found another corpse to feast on.

This is one time we need to look outside the city and hand the recruitment over to an independent personnel agency.

      • The Magpie says:

Well, dunno bout that, we could surely think local … say Pat Coleman, or Peter Newey. The ‘Pie wouldn’t be surprised if Lil Patty ‘Hot Lips’ O’Callaghan was tiring of her TEL pittance, and put her hand up for a four-fold increase in pay.

        • Sidelines says:

It’s a huge step up from being a sock puppet to CEO at TCC. It actually requires expertise in leading a large workforce, and financial experience. Besides competing egos would rule her out. The mayor has made that mistake before with Adele.

  25. One legged tap dancer says:

Jenny Hill’s tilting-at-windmills spray against the covid-19 app has provided a compelling case for everyone else to sign up.
With her sharp fashion sense and track record of successful thought farts (battery factory, Adani airport, ferry from casino to Cowboys stadium over the mud flats etc etc) our mayor has become an “influencer” – in reverse.

    • The Magpie says:

The most laughable thing is her purely politically motivated reason … because it’s a foreign company. She says this not realising or addressing that the app may actually help contain corona virus and even save lives. About par for the course.

      • Woe is me says:

And Townsville has voted her back in…..probably along with the 3 useless head knodders as well. Time to move to a blue ribbon seat?

        • The Magpie says:

          Quitter.

          • Cantankerous but happy says:

Quitter? You can’t be a quitter if you have already lost, the Mullet and her spineless councillors have 4 more years on top of the last 4, that’s 8 years of failure and misery, fully endorsed by the voters of this town, that’s game over. For those who have the means I would suggest a quiet retreat to somewhere better is the appropriate action.

        • I’ll be plucked says:

          Wimp

  26. Mike Douglas says:

Vote for comment of the week ! Text to the editor astonisher today ! Re Covid 19 app and our Mayor . It’s a pity this moralistic view wasn’t taken when a glorified Gardner from down south was paid big bikkies to “ teach” us instead of using a Townsville local who would have had a more intimate knowledge of the conditions we face . 27. Achilles says:

Is Kim Jung Il or Kim Jung Ded?

  28. Lemming says:

Well it looks like we have totally fucked our economy for no good reason.
Globally with 3.1m cases of the Rona and only 217k deaths, it is hardly unusual, and when did we start swallowing everything the media said without question or comparison. Bad – compared to what?

The WHO’s on numbers show the events are hardly a new normal – “Illnesses range from mild to severe and even death. Hospitalization and death occur mainly among high risk groups. Worldwide, these annual epidemics are estimated to result in about 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness, and about 290 000 to 650 000 respiratory deaths.” https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/influenza-(seasonal)

Before you ideologues jump down my throat, think about who is manipulating things and why.

Governments have more control, and surveillance of people,

Businesses have restructured deeper and harder than they could under normal conditions,

The powerful are more powerful, weak are weaker,

Banks have more leverage over debt.

    • The (Barely) Civil Engineer says:

You may be right, my small furry friend.

In this case I’d be glad that you are right and that we have over-reacted. To take the other course (Trumpistan style) would have been much worse.

I’d be happy to say we were too cautious and saved lives rather than standing there going “holy shite, that went bad fast”.

    • Dave of Kelso says:

      L,
Not sure that I agree with you. I am not a medical scientist so I will heed the advice of Prof Brenden Murphy.

Left to itself Cv19 would multiply as per Wheat on the Chessboard. Look that up in Wikipedia. At times, the Plague, and it was left to itself, no choice there, killed more than 50% of the population.

When this is all over Australians will go back to being themselves, intolerant of pompous or needless authority. I know I will.

And now it is almost happy hour………………

    • Kenny Kennett says:

Dear Scandinavian rat, you are well within your rights to have an opinion; particularly as you make out to be a conspiracy theorist. If you are one that is ‘swallowing everything the media reports without questioning’ then good for you but I think most of us are listening to what’s being presented to us in a bipartisan way by our leaders. I’d like you to face the families of the 217k and tell them that the work done to try and save their loved ones’ lives was ‘for no good reason’. In my opinion whilst there’s any pandemic coming out of China that is continuing to take lives of innocent people, and there’s NO CURE possibly for another year or two, any money spent is worth it. There’s about 20 people in Townsville that contracted the virus of which I know one of them. Thankfully he survived after being close to death, but the after affects still haunt him and his family. Did you hear the science on predicted numbers this morning? I’ll hunt down the source but the presenting professor’s research in this area predicted 95% more cases and deaths if we didn’t do what we did as early as we did.

      • Lemming says:

Have you found your link to the professor’s research yet KKKKen?

Would also be interested to know what you would use to define people who die who are not innocent people….?

It is false hope of waiting for a “Cure”. It is ridiculous and sets an impossible precedent.

The Flu vaccine only reduces symptoms and severity for 3 to 5 flu strains each year, whilst the other 140+ strains of the flu kill hundreds of thousands, not to mention the other infectious diseases with no vaccine.

Deal with the facts, life is risky, and people die. Only functioning economies can provide the resources to invest in adequate health care, and better standard of living. The vast majority of COVID19 deaths around the world are linked to comorbid conditions including obesity, diabetes, cardiac disease and chronic respiratory disease. Deaths in nursing homes due in large part to comorbidity and communal living. Nursing homes (different to retirement living) have people being sustained by pharmaceutical companies not actually living a life, but existing horribly.

  29. Insider says:

Scomo and Dutton are starting to shed their empathy (if they ever had it) and starting on the right wing ideology again. Dutton is getting stuck into China; and now Scomo is threatening/bribing the populace that he won’t ease Covid-19 restrictions unless at least 10 million sign up to the phone app. One Sydney chamber of commerce has proposed not serving customers who don’t have the app…..saying non-compliers are un-Australian. Turnbull in his book has summed it up well; the LNP prefer ideology over science.

    • Grumpy says:

Didn’t take the haters long to emerge, did it now?

    • I’ll be plucked says:

Insider, part of Dutton’s vitriol is because he got the virus (which on its own is understandable), the other and major part is his ideology and that rabid personality that pushes out through his spud-head!

  30. Peter Mackey says:

I’ve been thinking over the question regarding juries which was raised here recently, courtesy of the Pell outcome.

Like square-rigged sailing ships, Criminal Trial Juries as we know them have had their day.

For those who have been told that the Jury is the sole arbiter of facts, recent events have focussed attention on the benefits of maintaining the current jury system.

But there may be a more efficient model that would curtail repetitive statements that both Defence Counsel and Prosecutors are prone to deliver, minimise administrative guidance and tailor juries for specific trial types.

Consideration could be given to 4 person juries with selections being made from a substantial pool of both general and professionally qualified people who have completed a basic training course on Criminal Court processes. For complex trials, Judges might rule that a Jury should include a person holding a relevant professional qualification. The pool could be managed in a similar way to Electoral booth staffing and allow participants to opt in and out, depending on their availability.

Almost didn’t watch this because The ‘Pie genuinely thought at first look it was Albo on a political rant, but it turns out John Cadogan is a better looking version of the Labor leader. Yes, it’s long, but is articulate, makes rock solid sense and is a wonderful dose of reality in a world rushing to convince us we are mad and facts don’t matter.

  36. The Magpie says:

This posted on FB this morning. It raises two points worthy of further comm ent.

‘Secret meetings’, Sue? You can’t just drop that little gem into the social pool and not expand on it.

And the council can’t pay its wages bill? The flapping of chickens coming home to roost is deafening.

The ‘Pie would also suggest, Sue, that you not just report on council related matters per se, but that you highlight what is not being done.

Sorry everyone been a crazy first 9 days of Local Government.
From inductions and learning the new way of doing things to dealing with being the odd one out and secret meetings.
To proving I am there for us and the betterment of our city and community. I have found the other councillor’s to be friendly and are mostly trying to work with me. The city council staff are great they have worked hard to help me fit in under pretty weird circumstances .
I am working with your Mayor and the Mayor is working with me. We both need to learn a little more trust but we will get there.
I am not political. I do not care for who your choice of state and Federal government representatives are.
I will work with all levels of government on your behalf. I will do my best to keep you my bosses informed on anything council related and I will work on our behalf with all Councillors and the Mayor to help make this City great.
I ask for your patience over the first month or 2 while I get settled in and with our current situation that we respect one and other as we are all going through some very tough times.
Lastly just a bit of information Local Government is not at this time able to get funding to help keep your council running and wages still have to be paid. So you may see levels of service change over the coming months. Council is trying to help rate payers with deferral of rates and please ring customer service if you need help or call me on 0435260342 or email email hidden; JavaScript is required .
Have a great day like and share.
    Kind Regards
    Sue Blom

    • Ducks Nuts says:

Pie, I’m not in anyway supporting the current councillors or the way council has been run. However, I would what Sue appears to be saying is that Local Governments are not able to access the job keeper payments on offer from the Federal Government. Local Governments are also under pressure to cut rates, and offer deferred payment dates, all while maintaining a level of service. This will leave a hole in the operating budget. So they can either cut levels of service or cut staff. In times such as these, the publicly palatable option will be to cut/reduce or modify services to the community rather than cut staff.

      • Caribbean Crumpet says:

Agree with your summary bird balls. The next move from the brains trust at council will be really interesting to watch. I reckon the CEO and Mayor are already furiously shuffling figures back and forth to make Coronavirus the excuse for the crippling mismanagement of our city’s finances.

        • Ducks Nuts says:

There’s a limited pool of dollars available for council to shuffle. And with COVID-19 putting the squeeze on everything, those organizations previously scraping by will be exposed very quickly for financial mismanagement.

  37. The Obsfucator says:

So, if Council can’t pay its staff wages bill, why hasn’t the Mayor raised this matter publicly for transparency? And if there is no money left in the jam pot, why? Can the Mayor explain how a supposedly fiscally sound Council can dive deep into the depths of almost insolvency only a few months into a crisis like COVID? And yes, Sue, ‘secret meetings’. Unfortunately Mayor Doona will always have her little conga line of hand puppets and acolytes following her every Sargent like manly steps. They too are part of the ‘game’. And there isn’t room for an honest hand like you in their ‘game’. The reality is that COVID-19 is like a giant enema – it’s is ultimately flushing all of the financial shit out of companies, Councils, businesses, Governments and corporations. We are getting to see the true state of play. The Purple Doona wearer will not be able to hide all the skeletons for another 4 years, simply impossible. It’s all going to come out in the wash!!

    • The Magpie says:

Consider this … an elected councillor has publicly declared that the Townsville City Council is in financial difficulty even to pay its wage bill. This is not some ‘rumour’ put about by The Magpie, this is being openly said by a councillor. It must now be surely impossible for the Townsville Bulletin to ignore this, and skate on by with more irrelevant stories about a swimming pool project progressing as per schedule.

This will not only be a test for the TCC administration, but also of the integrity of the Townsville Bulletin. Good luck to both parties.

      • The Obsfucator says:

Excellent point Magpie. Although I enjoy this blog, as it is the only source of true information locally, the MSM has a duty to report unbiasedly on all matters of public concern. As you say, if an elected Councillor raises an issue such as the Council not being able to pay its staffs wages, then the Council Mayor and CEO along with local journalists have a duty of care to report these matters publicly. The Townsville Bullshittin can’t sit on the fence anymore. They are obligated to investigate and then report on it. Sue has climbed several notches of respect in my eyes. She has seen the books and doesn’t want to be tarred with the same brush as the Mullet, and deservedly so. This Council is split already, a couple of weeks in. However Sue is doing what her constituents want her to do, and that is to serve her community, not hide skeletons under the carpet.

Mayor Mullet, you and the CEO have some explaining to do. Care to do that now or wait until the internal leaks become a waterfall? You’ve held your finger in the dyke (so to speak) for too long. Now the dam wall is collapsing. Shall I give Kordamentha a call for you Mayor???

        • The Magpie says:

Your points are well taken and reinforce The’Pie’s point of view, but can’t agree that the council is ‘split’, with all that word’s inference of disunity and fractured ability to work competently … open honesty by one councillor will only become a split if the other Hill sheeple remain silent on the mayor’s orders (‘only I speak to the media’), or try to blur the real situation. Each individual councillor owes his/her allegiance to those who voted them as their representatives, not to the mayor who harbours ulterior political motives.

          • Not the ECQ says:

Mr Magpie you brought on all this confected debate about the Councils ability or inability to pay the wages of its staff based on a complete misreading of Sue Bloms FB page where she wrote (in italics) – Lastly just a bit of information Local Government is not at this time able to get funding to help keep your council running and wages still have to be paid. So you may see levels of service change over the coming months.

There is no mention of not paying wages. She just doesn’t say it. You can’t put words in her mouth.

      • The Rat says:

The Pool is not on schedule – it was supposed to re-open back in February and then in April when the extra work was discovered. Building is classed as essential work, so they don’t have the excuse of having to shut down the site for weeks on end.

        • The Stasi says:

And how do you know this Rodent?

          • Cantankerous but happy says:

        • Charlie Wulguru says:

Instead of driving past the Tobruk pool, get out of the car and have a look behind the barriers a see if you think it will be finished in a couple of weeks. Do you know it isn’t being built to Olympic standard. Times set there will not be recorded.

          • Not the ECQ says:

CW I stopped and peered through the fence and I reckon it is about 54.680665 yards long. How is that not Olympic? I hope you used a fold-out ruler on the footpath outside ’cause there’s no way those roll-up tape measurers are accurate.

          • The Magpie says:

            YOU WHAT!?!

Oh … err … sorry, you peered through the fence.

        • Alahazbin says:

Wasn’t there some confusion over the measurements of the pool and it will be no longer an ‘Olympic Std Pool’ or dig it up again and start again which would add a few million $ to the project.

          • Charlie Wulguru says:

NtE. The problem actually is the width, not the length and the culprits are the row of palm trees along the fence line, which are not to be disturbed.

    • Cantankerous but happy says:

Add to that a state Govt also heavily in debt, and which will be put firmly under the microscope in an election year, the Mullet will not be getting any bail outs from Trad either, this could get very interesting as the year unfolds, but hats off to Sue Blom who appears to be taking her responsibility seriously and has not been conned by the Mullet crew.

  38. Trevor Roberts says:

I have just posed this question to Sue through her Facebook post. The council sent out its normal rates run in January. Those rates notices had a due date of 2/03/2020. The vast majority of people pay their rates by this date in order to get the discount. The 2nd of March was long before any of the Corona virus shut downs so the council’s normal income from rates should have been paid as normal without any impact from the shut downs. My question to Sue is what explanation was she given for this lack of funds when the rates revenue has just been received. I could understand if the shut downs were still going at the next round of rates in August / September but right now that should not be the case.

    • The Magpie says:

Hi Trevor, very good point you make, trust you will keep us all here apprised of developments. And at the risk of ‘broken record’ status, having said this so often, The ‘Pie again points out that there is no discount for rates payment by due date, that amount is the true rating figure, and late payment extra is actually a penalty.

    • Scientician79 says:

An excellent question, if you’ve just had your biggest cash in flow until September, how the hell are they struggling to pay wages??

      This is deeply deeply concerning.

  39. Trevor Roberts says:

Let me also say this Sue is as straight as an arrow and you can trust her to be totally open and honest. On another issue the council passed another planning decision onto the CEO at this weeks full meeting because of the Belcara laws and the councillors fear of making a decision that favours someone who donated to their campaigns. These laws are supposed to prevent corruption in planning decisions. The effect here is quite the opposite. This decision now heads behind closed doors instead of being discussed in an open council meeting. You’d have to be a blind fool to think the mayor has no say in this process behind those closed doors.

This situation opens up the possibility of corrupt behaviour.

  40. Trevor Roberts says:

Response from Sue. The council is ok at the moment but may have problems in the coming months. Her Facebook post referred to the possibility of financial difficulties going forward.

    • The Stasi says:

Are you Sue’s spokesperson Trevor? Or are you trying to be relevant? How’d you do in the recent election?

      • The Magpie says:

That is an asininely stupid remark, if you read the thread, you would see that The ‘Pie asked Trevor to keep us up with developments, since The ‘Pie was not in direct contact with Clr Blom. And at least Trevor had a go in the election, where were you, you pompous sideline ass.

        • The Stasi says:

How do you know I didn’t have a go Mr Magpie, you pompous asshole?

          • The Magpie says:

OK, then, did you? Which division? Eh? Eh? Eh?

And how did YOU go, eh?

          • Grumpy says:

‘Pie – I know you run a broad church and, in the name of freedom of speech, you have remarkable tolerance for fucktards. However, for all of our sakes, would you please block this nasty little troll. Clearly he is a plant. Reading some of the responses on your FB page, it may not be hard to work out who he is.

          • The Magpie says:

As someone who rarely bothers with his FB page, The Magpie knows not of what you say, although it is noted that a particular web virus called Jim Ashby pops up his addled head occasionally. Who is your suspect?

          • The Magpie says:

But … but …. but, if we do that, how are we going to feel superior to at least one person among all our geniuses?

      • THE DON BRADMAM says:

Are you trying to be relevant??? What a comment coming from someone who thinks he’s a policeman. When you beat my batting average come back and show me your relevance then please. Im predicting the council will fold because of this virus. As you have said on the past magpie, maybe a good election to loose because under administration means all councillors cant stand for re-election. Feel for all the TCC staff that will loose there jobs soon. Maybe this lady sue bloome can inform us how much of a paycut tje mayor and fellow councillors are taking to help keep jobs?

        • The Magpie says:

Councillors and mayors won’t be taking any pay cuts as long as the LGAQ is their main lobbyist.

          • Alahazbin says:

Pie, Jim Ashby was a former TCC Supervisor in the Water Dept. So knows a little on how Council runs. But from what I hear it is far from how it was run in those days.

  41. One legged tap dancer says:

With council already almost $600 million in debt, and both the State and Federal governments cash strapped after spending billions on keeping Aussies afloat, you can forget about any government funded new projects in Townsville for the next 4 years.
I’m tipping the council was already bankrupt prior to the election.
Only a matter of days now before Hill blames Covid-19 for the council’s die financial state.

    • CEO of Crap says:

Well I do agree that a lot of the previously talked about fundings will now be placed on the back burner. There’s a lot that this Country will not be able to afford due to all the stimulus packages.

  42. Hee Haw says:

FFS the Win news piece on Townsville tourism with TEL https://www.facebook.com/233459343336476/posts/3820012661347775/ “Buy now holiday later” which part of the market do TEL think have spare money to buy holidays at these difficult times. AND. The statement that all Townsville accommodation would normally be at 80 to 100% at this time of year? Does no one think to verify this bullshit or just accept it?

  43. Ducks Nuts says:

Have we heard anything about the Mullets unspeakable accident?

  44. I’ll be plucked says:

So, we can come out of our cages from Saturday to go for a drive, non-essential shop, have a teddy bears picnic etc. Think I’ll wait until next week, to avoid the stampede!

  45. Terracom Tony says:

Interesting article in Our GayBC this morning; “Queensland Government released almost half of $80 million bond to company that purchased Blair Athol mine”. It revolves around some very generous conditions. The company, TerraCom, the beneficiary of Nanna Anna’s Government generosity is stacked with Labor mates including Father Jim Soorley. Mr Tony Mooney also is connected. These grubs never cease to amaze me. Oink oink snouts in the trough.

  46. Friar Tuck says:

Thank you for running the blog Townsville Magpie and for being inclusive of a broad church (I note some of your commenters are somewhat challenged, but they must find solace in your care). Bless you my son.

I’m off for a feed of spare deer ribs now.

    • I’ll be plucked says:

I agree Friar, I would suggest that some of the Pie’s brethren are in fact demented, but they keep coming back for more, so perhaps you are correct with your solace analogy.

Happy feasting portly one and watch that cholesterol!

      • The Magpie says:

Hmmm, interesting that you assume you’re not included in the bracket mentioned by Friar Tuck.

  47. Nostril darmiss says:

Where would we be now if sam cox won the election? Higher debt, rates increases, future job losses because of the downtown and COVID-19, blaming previous councils for the problems they face today, complaining about not getting anything through because of belcara laws, not collecting enough rates, having to honour rates deferments because of floods, having to deal with short fall of state/federal government money not being given to second pipeline at the Horton. What an absolute jok…….sorry did i say sam cox? I meant the current mayor, whoops. Just imagine if Sam Cox did win…

    • Jatzcrackers says:

Big Nose…what the hell are you smoking ?

      • Nostril darmiss says:

Do I seriously need to answer that question? I think some of your readers have been isolated to much magpie if they didn’t get my humour. Please tell me you understand or i might need to start smoking something as stated. By the soggy sao jatz crack.

    • Cheese platter says:

Whoa, full moon? Where did that shit about Sam come from?? Has Sargent Hill had a quiet day today? One of the Councillors snorting Viagra or something?
Fark, poor old Sam minding his business and suddenly this weird shit pops up!

      • The Magpie says:

Hang on a sec there, Rigide Fromage, The ‘Pie will admit he had to read Nostril missive a couple of times before publishing but in the end, figured peeps would see that he was trying to be funny about our beloved, re-elected mayor. Anyway, as said long before the election to Sam, this was a good one to lose.

        • Jatzcrackers says:

Quite right Pie ! I didn’t read old Big Noses comments thoroughly enough ! However, his ‘soggy Sao’ reference says a lot ! Don’t worry Nostrils, your end of year footy trip initiation secret is safe with us !

  48. Long Hangcock says:

Gordon Gekko (or is it Tony Moon’me?),
are you spruiking the company as a good investment? One thing is for certain – a mine the size of Blair Athol would require at least $100m to remediate it once it has reached its used by date. $35m is utter bullshit .Thats as believable as Jim Soorley is straight!!

  49. Terracom Tony says:

Now now peeps, calm down. Any business that a bunch of Labor politicians (and lobbyists (current or retired) are involved in is always going to be above board and transparent.

I’m wondering if Gekko is Mooney Snr or Jnr?

    • The Magpie says:

Mooney was a bit player and the lucrative ($350k pa) gig as a recognition of the wisdom of some decisions as mayor. The real graspers in this is our old mate Craig Cuddlepie Wallace and that tired old queen Soorley.

      • Alahazbin says:

Wasn’t Mooney and Prince Peter both involved with the same coal company a few years ago? The name escapes at the moment.

        • Jatzcrackers says:

Maybe Guildford Coal where Mooney was GM Stakeholder Relations. Office at Spring Hill, Brisbane.

  50. Tongue Lash says:

Townsville Bulletin trying to be amusing with the idiotic front page tongue, this morning. The NT News have been doing this sort of thing well for a number of years, is the TB now playing copycat in the hope of winning fans? No chance in a tongue!

    • Airline says:

While we are heaping on the Townsville Bulletin Today (Sat) P15 story refers To The Floating Hotel P15…Developed by Townsville entrepreneur DOUG BARCA.. And they can’t even spell his name correctly

      • Not the ECQ says:

Doug Tarca promoted the idea of a floating hotel but the one we got was not his. What Tarca did was develop a floating entertainment ‘doughnut’ called Fantasy Island to be parked nearby the hotel – they already had a floating tennis court. During construction from multiple sections of rather fragile styrofoam/cement stuff in the water near the mouth of Ross River an unfortunate incident resulted in the whole thing touching the bottom at low tide, deforming and kind of cracking up. However, the dodgy thing was completed, was somehow granted ‘survey’ as a marine vessel and after an insane tow to the reef withs pumps running lasted a few hours before it sank. Only the potted palm tops remained visible above water. It broke up and hundreds of pieces of the floating styrofoam/cement stuff floated to the coast along near Bluewater. GBRMPA made them ‘salvage’ the sunken ‘vessel’ at some huge cost and Tarca’s dream was finally over.

        • The Magpie says:

Tarca was a nice bloke. The ‘Pie met when him for an interview I did for the now defunct Bulletin magazine back in the 90s. He was a nice enough bloke, overflowing with that brand of manic enthusiasm particular to many north Queensland ‘seat of the pants visionaries’. Doug of course has long departed our company, and The ‘Pie isn’t surprised … he was the heaviest smoker I have ever met.

      • Old Tradesman says:

Don’t be too harsh, Barca is ship in Italian, floating ship, get it.
