King Of The Kids At Last? Is David ‘Kid’ Crisafulli Our Next Premier?

The Magpie’s long held and oft stated prediction that The Kid would take the state reins one day (the old bird has $20 riding on it from 8 years ago) could be just around the corner, according to other pundits better qualified at reading the political entrails. The ‘Pie pontificates.

The biter bit: the Astonisher gets all huffy and threatening towards it main supplier of news. It’s hypocrisy at 20 paces.

Townsville mayoral candidates on the campaign trail, all whipping up apathy … when they’re not missing in action.

And a hilarious musical ode to the Tangerine Anus from Australia’s greatest musical funnyman.

But first …

Those Take Back Townsville Talks – Unbelievable … And Unforgiveable

And that also goes for the Bulletin, the paper that is ‘all for us’.

When the Take Back Townsville Talks aimed at finally and definitively addressing juvenile crime in this city took place on Wednesday night, it was of sufficient importance that Queensland’s top cop, the state Police Minister, and all sitting state MPs of the region turned up to face a 100-strong angry crowd demanding answers.

Take back townsville meeting Screen Shot 2020-02-15 at 4.26.14 pm

Mayoral challenger Sam Cox was there, and talked to many in the crowd about their very real fears, frustrations and anxieties. And made it clear their problems would be his problems if elected.

BUT GUESS WHO WASN’T HERE? OUR MAYOR, AND NOT ONE SINGLE TOWNSVILLE CITY COUNCILLOR, ELECTED TO SPEAK FOR US, THAT WHO WASN’T THERE.

It is simply craven political cowardice for Jenny Hill and her sock puppet team to airily dismiss the meeting as ‘nothing to do with the council, we can’t do anything, we don’t make the laws’, and slink away like a dog that knows its going to get a whipping.

Go easy, you cry, Mrs Hill was probably still traumatised by the accident in which she was involved , in which a motorcyclist died, you say? Well, she was UN-traumatised enough the day before the meeting to be back in full simper mode, gurgling out lies about our golden future because she’d built a bloody stadium boardwalk, for God’s sake! You’d think it was the Sydney Harbour Bridge to listen to her.

And one doubts that apart from self-interest, not a single councillor would be so deeply affected by the mayor’s traffic troubles – if at all – to cry off the crime meeting. Sensitive little piglets never wanting to stray from the trough or the mother sow’s watchful eye.

And Therein Lies Part Of Our Problem

We need someone in Walker Street, unfettered by outmoded political ties and therefore not open to coercion, who is eager to kick down Brisbane doors on our behalf. Even when local government don’t make the necessary laws, the mayor and councillors are still are elected to speak on our behalf, and on behalf of the city we have asked them to run efficiently and fairly for us. Not someone who will sit in George Street ante rooms until some oily flunkey ushers them into the regal ministerial presence and be fobbed off in condescending hushed tones. Whether Sam Cox has the cojones to do that we cannot know yet, but it sure as hell isn’t the massively compromised Mayor Mullet, still backed, advised and manoeuvred by Labor back room hipsters.

And, as far as The ‘Pie could see, the Townsville Bulletin made NOT ONE SINGLE MENTION that the mayor and councillors were missing. The paper was no doubt told in the sternest of terms it was nothing to do with council, so the paper simply rolled over, had its tummy tickled and ignored the glaring absence.

Copycat Campaign

Bentley is right on target when he takes aim at one of the more annoying things about what campaigning there has been.

Candidates FIN small

Not just the unoriginality, but the lethargy is galling.. Sam Cox figured he was on a winner with the simplistic ‘Time For Change’ but then along came Palmer stooge Greg Dowling, who promptly pinched Sam’s slogan. If that wasn’t enough, Mayor Mullet decided to nick the Palmer Party colour scheme and wording for one of her suburban offices.

nerve nerve center

But looking at all the social media sites, Sam Cox is starting to put some meat on the bones, saying specially what he will do on various issues. But he has been smart enough to say a lot of what he can do will be dictated by what he finds when he has access to the council books.

Truth In Advertising?

There’s been the perennial kerfuffle about political signage around town, with mobile billboards parked in questionable, often distracting positions.

But The Magpie was particularly taken with the one on Queens Road, which held an unintentional but worthwhile message about reptiles.

Rocket Man Running Out Of Fuel?

Seems some sort of financial reality regarding Townsville has dawned on the promoters of ageing glitter gay, EJ. Seems tickets sales haven’t been all they could wish for, and it’s not exactly surprising given the asking rates:

Screen Shot 2020-02-15 at 8.52.01 pm

So it’s logical to offer some sort of financial enticement to the regular rack rate. But this drastic?

Screen Shot 2020-02-15 at 8.51.00 pm

Something going a bit wonky with this promotion?

Maybe Not Yet, But You Never Know …

David Crisafulli 153ef614999c89b4aec53abfc6fc1068

Regular readers of this blog know that The Magpie has for years chronicled the clever political trajectory of David ‘Kid’ Crisafulli, the self-described ‘just another wog from Ingham’. The ‘Pie was at the Bulletin all those years ago when he dubbed him ‘Kid Crisafulli, the child councillor from the west’. Even in council, he had style and flair, but was from the outset, a disciplined career man, who from day one knew what he wanted and went about getting it. Under the tutelage of veteran senator Ian Macdonald, The Kid carried the old man’s bags as he learnt the ropes. And he learnt patience. After doing a steady job as Local Government Minister and member for Mundingburra in the Newman Government, the Kid was turfed out in the landslide against Newman’s ‘too much, too soon’ political debacle, a misjudgement for which Queenslander are still paying.

Never fully in the wilderness, always in favour with the LNP as a shooting star, and always scheming behind the scenes, The Kid took his bitter (and undeserved) defeat on the chin, packed up wife Tegan and the kids, and headed south. Indeed his defeat in Mundingburra was the proverbial blessing in disguise, allowing Crisafulli to make the crucial … indeed, vital … career move out of the boondocks. After a lot of backroom machinations, he got the LNP nod as candidate for Broadwater, and was back soon in George Street again, enjoying what he had greatly missed, once confessing ‘you get used to, you to get to like, the opening of doors and people carrying your bags for a change’.

But that was never The Kid’s motivation, he is one of the very few politicians, certainly from around here, who is actually both intelligent in the broader sense, and actually showed he sought to change things for the better.

Now it seems, he’s in with a chance.

Has The Freckle Developed Into The LNP’s Melanoma?

Frecklington:palaszczukScreen Shot 2020-02-15 at 11.31.11 pm

Seems Deb Frecklington scratched herself badly when she made the inexplicably stupid decision to criticise Anna Alphabet for her fashion sense and being childless among other things. Callous and dopey in the extreme, Frecklington’s approval rating plunged and continues lags well be hind that of the Premier – last week, The Freckle wallowed back on 22% as preferred Premier, well behind apparent fashion inept Palaszczuk on 34%. And the LNP leader’s overall approval rating of 23% opposed to disapproval at 44%, certainly points to the game being far from over from over for Labor next October.

And as unlikely as a spill is at this stage – the LNP bosses are myopic and stubborn towards the rapidly changing leadership reality – suddenly The Kid is waiting in the wings.

Writing a perceptive piece in the Courier Mail, Dr Paul Williams, a senior lecturer at Griffith University, summed up the LNP’s leadership alternatives, dismissing as unlikely any chance for any of the possible four females being allowed a leadership bitch-slap. Dr Williams wrote in part in the Courier:

Then there are the blokes. Given that Brisbane is unlikely to ever again warm to a regional conservative, that rules out the likes of Dale Last (Burdekin), Jarrod Bleijie (Kawana), Ted Sorenson (Hervey Bay) or David Janetzki (Toowoomba South).

Eliminating former LNP leaders John-Paul Langbroek and Tim Nicholls – and former Liberal leader Mark McArdle (Caloundra) – the list narrows to Christian Rowan (Moggill), Tim Mander (Everton), Steve Minnikin (Chatsworth), Rob Molhoek (Southport) and David Crisafulli (Broadwater).

Given the need to win over progressive secular Brisbane, conservatives such as Mander and Rowan will be overlooked.

But the party is unlikely to embrace Minnikin either, given his support for Labor’s 2018 abortion law reform.

If we set aside the lower profile Molhoek, we’re left with Crisafulli – a former journalist and local government minister long touted as a future premier.

An experienced minister who’s also good on the soundbite, Crisafulli – an urbane and energetic progressive who’s not yet 40 – is the LNP’s best hope of toppling a premier who, despite tumbling approval ratings, is still Labor’s best asset.

But William’s ends on the bitterly realistic note that the LNP hierarchy will ignore all this, and smugly drift on to the next election, firmly believing they are in for no big surprises.

Maybe the ‘Pie will have to wait until 2024 to collect his $20.

Down At The Bulletin, Even When They’re Right, They’re Wrong.

During the week, there was a deeply amusing exchange of social media about some random copying and pasting Astonisher ‘subscriber only’ content on to his Facebook page, thus offering it to the world for free.

Now it’s not often The ’Pie agrees with the Bulletin, but on this occasion, they were absolutely right to warn of this drongo, and told him in no uncertain terms the legal might of News Ltd would land on him if he didn’t cease and desist. And quite right too, as laughable as an argument is about the Bulletin’s ‘intellectual copyright’ (gasp, wheeze, snurffle – who would want to claim it!!), the paper is correct, and journalism of any standard must be paid for – that’s the law regarding paywalls, and reasonably so in our changing media landscape.

The Bulletin’s big stick warning however, ended with a truly idiotic statement: ‘By the way, this communication is nor for publication or posting.’ YOU’VE JUST POSTED IT ION FACEBOOK, YOU NITWITS, and besides, with the exception of certain legal exchanges between parties, send someone a message like that legal warning, and it is their property to do with what they choose. Stick to wire bending, folks.

But it is also mind-bending to see the paper attacking someone on their biggest source of stories, social media. And there’s no show without punch, so trust a bum kissing, virtue-signally journo to jump in.

Screen Shot 2020-02-15 at 10.25.25 pm

Ok darlin’, the new boss now sees that you do 11 hour days (you say), but you may now just hope he doesn’t investigate just what your 11 hours yields in terms of value.

The Heat Making You Itchy And Scatchy?

Then the latest in UK swimwear won’t relieve you one bit. Megan and Hairy … sorry, Harry one piece numbers are expected to be all the rage in the coming northern summer.

Highs And Lows

hey, we blokes give the sheilas a go at sport and stuff, but they really should know their place and always look up to the blokes … in every way.

Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson

Many things have been said of Donald Trump, the Tangerine Anus, but there’s one big question that the world – Republicans, Democrats, Americans, Russians, Aussie’s, everyone – wakes up to ask every single morning of this cockamamie presidency … what’s Donald gonna do today? Our own Kevin Bloody Wilson of “Livin’ Next Door Alan’ fam, asks exactly that in his latest musical offering.

The question is even more pressing now that this egotistical maniac has been the green light for revenge non-bum kissers. Our usual gallerfy.

  1. Mike Douglas says:

Of course Mayor Mullet wouldn’t attend the “ take back Townsville meeting “ as the Labor gravy train will deliver seats on boards like JCU/Townsville hospital and Port long after her Mayoralty . Our independent Team Hill Councillors wouldn’t have attended because the Mullet wouldn’t let them . A brouhaha over at the tin foil hat TRRA facebook page when they made their usual innuendos this time about the Mayors accident . Over 140 responses the majority stating how unethical + disgraceful the site is , and how they should change their name as they don’t represent Townsville . On the back foot the administrator tried referring the hostile crowd to their constitution when one savvy person posted the writers name . With less than 14 days until the stadium opens and South Townsville residents havnt received anything from Council on access and parking .

    • Cajun says:

We got a letter at our McIlwraith St address, about 3 weeks ago, concerning the new parking restrictions in South Townsville.

  2. Cantankerous but happy says:

The kid might be handed an opportunity early April if a bad result comes the LNP way in the Currumbin by election. Whilst he would probably have to look at deputy in this round, it would at least establish a position in the party he can build on. If the by election result is bad for the LNP I believe they have plenty of time before the next election to handle a leadership change and build momentum. Fixed terms means the govt can’t take advantage of any leadership changes in the opposition and call an early election, so it would still give 4-5 months for the opposition to gain some momentum, so plenty of interest in the March election outside of local Govt.

  3. North Ward's Nutty Warden says:

Pie you cooked old goose – once again you have chased conspiracies where they don’t exist. More power to the Kid, but we all know he has had bugger all help from his party. He is simply a fighter who never gives up. Imagine what he could do for NQ as Premier. We’d have a chance to get back on our feet.

  4. Girl Power says:

Hopefully ‘the kid’ will romp it in. Many people are fed up with the ridiculous girl power/equality chestnut that is out of control. The appointment of Carroll as Police Commissioner was the last straw for me. I have no issue with women, but I have an issue with a Government that has lost sight of important State issues and is instead focussed solely on female promotion, female executives, female wage equality, female female female. Time for Anna and her girls to be put out to pasture. Enough is enough

  5. Lost testicles - phone 1800TCC says:

The Mayor and Councillors are spineless and pathetic. Not one of them showed up!!! Gutless fools. Nair a set of testicles to be found amongst the lot of them. They are meant to represent the people, not be scared of them. These fools have to be voted out, there is no other option. Can we please make sure that those who are vying for Council this time around actually have a set of hairy dusters between their legs and nobodynowns a pink doona? Thank you

  6. Frequent flyer says:

Jenny Hill won’t get involved in the kiddy crime issue because it is a State problem.
BUT she wasted no time in getting involved in the Qantas v Queensland Airports standoff, calling for a futile boycott of the national airline.
She won’t go against her mate Anna Alphabet because she doesn’t want to jeopardise the protection the Premier provides her (dam mismanagement is just one example).

  7. Pumper Thumper says:

    Hello Maggy

Did you know that the Townsville Haughton Pipeline has cost $236 M and does not have a pump station to pump water to the Ross River Dam.

Apparently, it all rests on Stage 2 going ahead one day.

I heard this from a Townsville engineer and have no further information to add.

    • The (Barely) Civil Engineer says:

You might even find that there is no pipe under (or over) the Haughton River. That apparently is Stage 1.1.

What we do have is an “oversized” pipeline going from nowhere to the dam.

Perhaps that’s why the media activities have dried up and there is so much other activity to divert attention away from the projects and at other shiny baubles.

Word is that TCC Project Director Blair Middleton is soon to be given an opportunity to excel elsewhere.

      • Guy says:

Yeah it’s why I decided to have nothing to do with the pipeline. The cost benefit didn’t make sense.

The problem is team hill was damned if they did build the pipeline and damned if they didn’t.

From a political point of view they had a gun against calling for the pipeline, realistically when all is said and done it will cost about a billion dollars all up. The entire system providing the water to the dam will need upgrading. There was talk of using solar to pump the water.

If only we had invested 1.5 million dollars American in the omniprocessor.

You could probably just pump all that pure water to an industrial plant somewhere – they love high quality water.

  8. City dweller says:

I have a retired police officer living in my complex and he thinks that the investigation into the traffic accident taking 12 mths is very curious.

    1. Its not the first time a politician has had a incident pushed asside during an election campaign esspcially if the party runs the state. To be fair thats both sides so im noy saying either are angels.

    2. A minor traffic accident like this the officers at the sceane would only take 30 mins to be able to rell who was at fault esspcially woth so many witnesses. Cameras would be used as a conclusion to back up the statements. He said minor traffic accident because its a clear case of someone not giving way, weather its the car or motorcycle. The death of the rider just means heavier charges if car is at fault. This does not take 12 mth to determine.

    3. By law, but he would need to brush up on current process, any toxicology tests by both drivers shouldnt be published because of privacy which is fair enough. But given the mayor has been instructed by lawyers not to comment may indicate there’s a problem somewhere. Its pretty clear she wasnt drunk as such because the law states you loose your licence now until court date. But he cant understand why the time length is there. He said he could understand if it was multi vehicle/casualty because theres testing of cars trucks etc and sometimes no witness to the accident which takes time. You would think that these simply reasonable questions can be asked by media.

    • The Magpie says:

While The ‘Pie has clearly said there would be no speculation published on the accident, he meant who was at fault. But it is fair enough to question why the police have not clarified anything, and are presumably waiting for a coroner’s inquest to consider the evidence they have gathered. Something certainly seems to be on the honker here … let’s for instance say, exact same circumstances but let’s say the motorcyclist was a celebrity .. let’s say James Durie (just for a touch of irony) ofr even a local state member even more irony) do you really believe the cops wouldn’t have polished up the silver buttons for the cameras, and have it all sorted by now?

Go down to the nearest police station and ask for some community responsibility and you’ll be told to fuck off, nothing to see here.

  9. Polly says:

Elton John sold out the Brisbane entertainment centre. 10500 tickets. Townsville stadium at 15500 tickets so far….. why not drop the price and give people the ticket price $99? If it’s the category people want and can afford?

    • Critical says:

Polly, I know a number of people who would like to go to the concert but are concerned about losing their money if the concert is cancelled due to heavy monsoonal rain, a threatening cyclone and Townsville being under a cyclone watch or warning or cyclone /weather damage to the stadium due to a weather event before the concert. Apparantly there’s no infomation on the ticketing site which tells people about refunds if any of these situations arise. After Melbourne we all know that Elton doesn’t stay on stage if there’s bad weather and I doubt he’d like flying in and out of Townsville in rough weather.

    • Fishframe says:

Are there any stats on how many tickets have been sold so far for Townsville?

  10. Fishframe says:

I am not happy with Labour’s accomplishments since getting in power. LNP unlikely to be any better. All Freckle does is attack Labour at every available opportunity. My opinion of Crisafulli is that he is a ‘career’ politician chasing his next promotion. He is too arrogant and self centred to make the decent Leader that Qld needs. I am happy if anyone wants to correct me by listing the many achievements he has made for Townsville and Queensland. I’m sure he has a fan club who will respond ……..

    • Dave of Kelso says:

      Ff,
Who is the person that would make the decent leader that Qld needs?

      • The Magpie says:

Modesty prevents The ‘Pie from addressing that question ….heh heh heh.

        • Dave of Kelso says:

No, your the decent ( well, reasonably decent ) leader that Townsville needs.

TOWNSVILLE MAGPIE FOR MAYOR OF TOWNSVILLE! heh heh heh

          • Dave of Kelso says:

You should form a Team Magpie from your more level-headed Nesters. You know, the ones who dribble from both sides of their mouth.

          • The Magpie says:

We will take that as your Team application.

          • The Magpie says:

Have you no pity for this city …,.,

          • City dweller says:

Dave i think you would be unleashing Townsville to a greater power there then the pressure on clives belt buckle. Headline reads “Townsville mayor magpie today swopps on state government” OMG imagine the carnage?? Have you ever seen a magpie hunt a pigion and what’s left after, just grey feathers.

          • Dave of Kelso says:

            CD,
            Yes……….but it is beautiful.

      • Fishframe says:

DoK, I can’t see the right talent coming through the ranks of either Party. What I am looking for is someone along the lines of former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Graham Quirk. Natural leadership style, no self interest and hard working. Someone like him but 20 years younger maybe. And someone who will have the guts to bring back the Upper House to Qld Parliament like the other States have and like we always ‘used’ to have.

        • Dave of Kelso says:

          Ff,
I 100% agree with you re the upper house. Membership linked to Local Government areas and half upper house elections at the same time as Local Government elections.
With an upper house the corruption of Bjelke Peterson, the excesses of Newman, and the stupidity of Beaty and Puddleduck would not have occured.

  11. Dave Sth says:

Bit longish so I beg for leniency. All I got to say Pie is thank God the north has you. The excuse for journalism that passes at News Ltd I wouldn’t & refuse to give a cracker through subscription. Long may you be a thorn in the establishments side…

OK my visit, in town for a few days. Stayed in Palmer st, wow the eye sore that was once where the woke little eateries are in Flinders st is now popped up in Palmer st. Not only that past the Shamrock some idiot has closed half the road, why make it harder to get to? All the for lease signs in Palmer st mentioned the stadium, hope I am wrong but sorry can’t see the stadium doing a foggiest for the street especially with food lane 2 going in across from food lane 1 over in Flinders St. Which is a shame as probably the better accommodation in the town is located in Palmer st. Makes sense to have good eateries there. As for the CDB IMO we are now at a stage where good money is being thrown after bad, for very little result… Time to start spending on the neglected suburbs.

Wow months before a council election the roundabout that I know I have earbashed local councillors & state members about for a few years now is built on Geaneys Lne near Griffin Groups shopping centre. Got fobbed off by council saying accident rates weren’t high enough for intervention that ended up researching & found difficult to verify, surprise surprise. However northern beaches has no tip thanks to Cr Jacob & Mullett. Unfortunately if I was still able to vote I wouldn’t be able to put Jacob last, sleight of hand & off my old address goes into division 1 with the equally vacuous Ryder. Hopefully people this time round have more sense. Which leads me to the whole problem holding Townsville back IMO, the desperate need for fresh blood through everything. We seem to have these fiefdoms built around the city by individuals & families that probably worked well in a smaller city but as the city has grown they now stifle further growth. I look at the present council, obviously they have no shame otherwise they wouldn’t be standing again. As for the challengers from what I saw this week too many has-beens or nepotistic opportunists (Looking at you Mooney’s, more of you is the last thing this city needs). While we are talking about new blood some new developers without the taint of the old school please step up. Compared to smaller centres in the Hunter Valley Townsville seems stale.

Lastly WTF is Clive Palmer up to? As if the half heated campaign by Sam needs any competition. Words fail, can only see this helping Mullet & she aint his friend. Anyway keep up the good work Pie…

    • City dweller says:

Dave sth your correct with the out with old in with the new but the list we have i think is ok. Trevor Roberts and Corey Davis stand out as far as im concerned. Trevor seems different in his opinion then last time around as a councilor, maybe being able to have your own voice instead of being part of a group has helped. And Corey Davis is a young teacher who dosnt seem to be from the woke lefties parties that most teachers are nowadays. They are working together somewhat but have strong opinions on different things. There obviously running seperate campaigns for there divisions but one woukd hope together in council they could help get thing’s done. Esspcially if we get a mayor who is willing to listen and put it to everyone to decide. Which means no Jenny hill. I believe you still need what you call deadwood in older councillors if they have the whole city in mind but are there for the people who voted you in first, your division. Something this bunch of dumb fucks have completely forgotten.

      • The Magpie says:

You bring up two interesting points, Dweller … some of the Jenny puppets who get back in may well be emboldened to show the true colours they hav been hiding and become more productive and community minded, if she is no longer there with her evil eye.

And here’s another point The ‘Pie has been meaning to ask. Doesn’t seem anyone is yet to take on arch goof Messagebank Walker, who more than ripe for the picking, what with the Goodsells Earthmovers matter ruining nearby properties and lives with no support from him, and don’t start on Lansdowne, that a booth or two likely to be 100% anti.

So here’s the question, and it is a genuine question. Where is Donna Marano?

The ‘Pie knows nothing of this lady, her circumstances or even if she is still in Townsville, but what he does know that Ms Marano made Messagebank shit himself right royally in the 2012 election, and coming out of nowhere, she lost by just 74 votes …. and even then, there are big question marks about Labor doing some creative counting to get Les and his soiled underwear across the line.

  12. Trevor Elson Independent Division 9 candidate says:

Whilst door knocking and doing a letter box delivery along Kings Road yesterday it is interesting that the utility that is carrying the Liam Mooney sign is only about 8 metres from a sign that states “PARKING ON NATURE STRIP PROHIBITED QUEENSLAND ROAD RULES-SECTION 197″ It appears the laws do not apply to the Hill team?

    • Dave of Kelso says:

On the Sunshine Coast last Christmas. People being booked for car or caravan on footpath. Includes 2 wheels on and 2 wheels off. Most aggressive.

Seems not to apply in my part of the parish given the extensive footpath parking shemozzle including long term car wrecks. Most attractive.

    • Critical says:

Trevor, I have seen this ute parked at right angles to the curb and street on Queens Rd at Corcoran Park and at the roundabouts (check Pie’s of vehicle next to croc warning sign), on Balls Lane and Kings Rd in same position. Asked a P plate holder if parking like this is legal and got a quick no and told that you could only park like that if there was signs telling you that.
Looks like Mullet’s mob either have some sort of exemption or are just openly defying the law.

  13. Trevor Roberts says:

Malcolm both Corey Davis and I attended the Take Back Townsville meeting on Wednesday night. I was more than happy with the response from the police. They are doing an outstanding job with no support from State government and the courts.

Leaving the meeting I had no confidence that the current state members were likely to push for any serious action in this area. But the Take Back Townsville group are working hard and have growing support.

Very disappointed but in no way surprised that mayor and none of her councillors or new councillor candidates turned up. That group is toeing the line already. Politics must be set aside. We must all get behind Take Back Townsville and if there is a change of state government at the end of the year I would expect this group to go after them just as hard if they fail to deliver. They’ll certainly have my support if I’m elected next month.

    • The Magpie says:

Excellent comment, Trevor, and well done to Corey, too. The ‘Pie always welcomes advice about your policies, rallies and messages. And that applies to all candidates. The ‘Pie just doesn’t have the hours in the day to keep up with Facebook postings and the inevitable time-consuming distraction of the comments they attract. In any given week, The ‘Pie has to read dozens of pages of documents – courts, submissions, minutes, et al – so a concise message pointing me in the direction to check out an issue would be most welcome and helpful.

  14. Charlie Wulguru. says:

Don’t forget, The Kid was a Newman supporter (Asset Sales.. Blah.. Blah.. Blah). A big weight around his neck.

    • The Magpie says:

The asset sales debacle, throughly mishandled without a shred of effort to sell and debate the issue properly, was a big part of the ‘too much too soon’ crash or crash through arrogance of Newman’s political hubris. The Kid always has been a quick learner, and he no doubt is a smarter for it. But don’t make the mistake that The ‘Pie is offering unconditional love … that’s not the way this blog works. (Like The Kid would give a fuck anyway.)

    • City dweller says:

Slow down Charlie dont forget anna 1 Bligh sold the railway.

    • L Berry says:

Charlie – what’s the “blah, blah”?

    • The (Barely) Civil Engineer says:

With huge respect Charlie, you might find with some little research that the LNP actually hasn’t ever sold a major government asset. Every major asset sold in this state has boosted the coffers of the ALP (at the expense of the workers previously employed).

Newman was a nasty little shit but in this area his failing was listening to people who told him to go out and float the idea of selling stuff rather than just ramming it through the doors of parliament in the dying minutes of a session as has been the long-standing tradition in Queensland Parliament for both sides.

  15. The Magpie says:

    SO … IT’S ON.

    TOMORROW.

Trad will be poised the plank, awaiting her fate. Will Labor give the final prod to her ballooning bottom, or will she be asked to about-turn and receive a Palaszczuk pardon?
We’ll know soon enough, but one local MP will be hugging his teddy tonight, sobbing with apprehension for the future of his one true love – apparently.
Anyone see this in the Sunday Mail?

    Especially this bit …

If anything sums up this shameless fuckwit’s selfish, catatonic disconnect from decency and responsibility, it is this bum kissing by the disgraceful leech representing Thuringowa.

SHE’S A CROOK, YOU OAF, THIS IS POLITICS, NOT THE BLOODY PLAYGROUND, where it’s OK for you to get political hard-ons behind the factional bike shed.

What a bloody disgrace and embarrassment you, Harpic, just bloody resign.

  16. Dave of Kelso says:

Aaron Harper, it is better that you keep your mouth shut, and let people think you are a fool, than to open it, and confirm the fact. Here endth the lesson.

    • Fishframe says:

Aaron Harper, I salute you. Going down with the Trad Ship. Good on you man, and let’s hope your replacement is a whole lot better !

  17. City dweller says:

More car chases more knife crimes tonight. Another night in Townsville and its behind the paywall as rolling coverage. Well done new editor!

  18. Droopy draws says:

I’m with you on the Kids long time aspirations, Pie.
The moment he left for the southeast to build a more solid base on which to flourish was when you could see it wouldn’t be too many years before he was running the joint.
Don’t know him but seems like one of the few who speaks what he believes. Not what he’s told punters want to believe….
Bit late for a happy new year but I feel it’s shaping up for a good one.

    • Fishframe says:

Politics these days is a popularity contest, for sure. But in politics, who is and isn’t endorsed, is still decided in the back rooms by the power brokers. Make no mistake on that. Crisafulli’s problem is that he stood next to Can Do when LNP had their shock loss to Labour in what was supposed to be a ‘non lose-able’ Election. He doesn’t have totally clean hands…..

      • The Magpie says:

That could be seen as loyalty … didn’t hear of too many back room boys wringing their hands as the ‘unlose-able’ election approached. But maybe The ‘Pie is just arguing for his $20 worth.

  19. J jones says:

Had a chat to an astonisher journo today.

Journalism there and across News Ltd works like this these days.

You are judged not on the quality of your work but how many new subscriptions your work attracts.

2 is ok. 4 good and 6 and above wooo hooo

So a click bait heading and first para that encourages someone to hand over their hard earned is what they do.

  20. Bing4814 says:

Elton John had too walk off stage half way though his concert at Auckland. He later tells fans he has a bout of pneumonia. So how many concerts will be canceled now. Elton John tweet after the show –
“I want to thank everyone who attended the #EltonFarewellTour gig in Auckland tonight. I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia earlier today, but I was determined to give you the best show humanly possible. I played and sang my heart out, until my voice could sing no more. I’m disappointed, deeply upset and sorry. I gave it all I had. Thank you so much for your extraordinary support and all the love you showed me during tonight’s performance,”
    Walking pneumonia from Dr Google

“Walking pneumonia is an infection caused by bacteria that primarily affects an individual’s lower and upper respiratory tract. Walking pneumonia is not as severe as the other forms of pneumonia, so it is often referred to as atypical pneumonia. In most cases of walking pneumonia, hospitalization and bed rest are not required for recovery. It goes unnoticed and feels similar to the common cold for most individuals. Despite the mild symptoms produced by the bacteria that causes walking pneumonia, the affected cells are resistant to penicillin, which is often utilized in the treatment of pneumonia. With treatment, most cases of walking pneumonia tend to last for between a week and a month”
Wonder if the Townsville concert will be cancelled for this reason ?

  21. One legged tap dancer says:

Mayor Mullet will be wringing her hands with news from New Zealand this morning that Elton John may have to cancel Australian concerts.
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-17/elton-john-townsville-show-in-doubt-after-walking-offstage/11970808
Word from Walker Street is that Jamie Durie is on standby as a late replacement.

  22. Jatzcrackers says:

ABC online news this morning reported that Sir Elton John was forced to cut short and walk off stage during his Mt Smart Stadium concert in New Zealand on Sunday night. Reported to be diagnosed and suffering from ‘walking pneumonia’ earlier that day, old mate apologised and said he gave it his best shot. With his illness reported to take up to six weeks to recover from, upcoming concerts in Melbourne, Coffs and Townsville are in doubt ! An SOS to the ‘Reclining Rockers’ could well be on the radar !

  23. The Magpie says:

They don’t even allow us the privacy and intelligence of our own emotions … the Townsville Bulletin now tells us what we MUST feel.

Ignoring the worst splint infinitive imaginable, ‘tragically been found dead’? … as versus what? Happily found dead? Joyfully found dead?

You kiddies need a good swift kick in your click-baits.

  24. Sadie says:

Molachino would be eyeing off Harper’s seat, bigger & better goodies in that trough.

  25. One legged tap dancer says:

Jenny Hill’s Risk Assessment for the Elton John concert in the new stadium in February:
    – Chance of a cyclone? – Maybe
    – Change of heavy monsoon rain? – Probably
    – Chance of a 72-year-old getting sick? – Definitely
Is there anything our mayor can get right?
Will be interesting to see what happens if Elton hasn’t recovered by 29 February.
    Replacement act?
    Ticket refunds?
    Debacle!

    • The Magpie says:

A highly speculative adventure, for sure, but hey, it might happen yet … for whatever that is worth.

    • NQ Gal says:

We can blame The Mullet for a lot of things, but EJ’s touring schedule that sees him in Australia in summer, is not one of them.

      • The Magpie says:

Quite right, she no doubt had absolutely nothing to do with the concert coming here, but was happy to bask in the glory and make it was all her doing …. so …..

        • Rocket Man says:

So disappointed. Elton loves dressing up in crazy outfits and rumour has it that he was going to sing his final song in a pink doona!!

        • Snug as... says:

Moral of the story…to avoid a bad frog in your throat…remember to wash your socks

        • Fishframe says:

Yes indeed. And in any case, if Sir Elton were to cancel the Mullet only needs to call it a 1 in 500 year event so as to avoid all liability.

  26. Dave of Kelso says:

It seems that Coven that Governs has rallied around Trad. Let the discontent fester inside and outside the Qld parliament.

  27. City dweller says:

Very funny picture i think on Sam Cox Facebook page about last nights crime. Let you look. How ridiculous that somebody whos trying to help gets charged. I hope a fund me page helps him out. But whats more disappointing is that alot of comments everywhere all keep coming back to say its not a council issue dont talk about it. What are these people thinking when they see this in news? Its on Trevor Roberts page, Corey Davis page, nothing on any team hills pages surprise. I read a comment about how the mayor steps out for state funded stadium news but not state funded crime wave. That there should be enough to see her voted out. But me thinks the dumb fucks arnt thinking again.

    LNP ARE YOU LISTENING?

    if not,

    ONE NATION ARE YOU LISTENING?

IS ANYONE LISTENING TO THE GOOD PEOPLE OF TOWNSVILLE?

    • The Magpie says:

No, no, Dave absolutely INCORRECT. Have a little thinkette, mate … the bloke took risks with uninvolved public when he pursued in self-confessed anger … that’s a lot different from the cracking skull of some not-so-little well-deserving shit directly threatening, that’s called justifiable self-defence (or would be deemed so after several lawyers bought new spinnakers for their yachts from the earnings of arguing the bleedin’ obvious). And deliberately crashing into a vehicle is just plain dumb, and likely to be deadly. For the police to NOT charge this bloke would change the whole ball game for the worse. Vigilantes often act on hunches, not evidence, and that, believe it or not, is actually worse than the situation we have now. And so easy to escalate beyond the original spur of juvenile crime. Frustrating, yes, but condoning this bloke and the police’s very correct follow-up is no answer to anything.

      • Old Tradesman says:

The only negative I can see in your comment Pie is that the Tradie was charged in 24 hours but the accident on Nathan St is going to take 12 months.

      • Last Drinks says:

and not to forget endangering the life of his 15 year old daughter.

      • Bing4814 says:

Agree with you pie. But if he chooses to take it to trial be hard to find twelve Townsville jurors who would convict him. Fine line between self defence and taking law into your own hands. Very lucky no pedestrians or other motorists were hurt last night.

        • The Magpie says:

It’s the law that is at fault … the trials and tribulations of that bloke a decade ago on the Gold Coast who shot an intruder trying ton get into his property shows where this leads. Exonerated after about 5 years of legal hell. And when you chase somebody … or even actually move to pick jup a weapon to defend yourself and end up doing a mischief … you are still in the wrong. And this is not the sort of thing that goes to trial, criminally and hardly civilly.

  30. Thinkingoutloud says:

I’m a day or two behind with this one but how is Glenn Doyle’s form with wearing his prominently branded with Queensland Government uniform for his photoshoot in the paper recently. Surprised if he hasn’t received a wrap over the knuckles from Comm Carroll for that stunt.

On a seperate note I congratulate Asti Poole for putting her hand up to stand against Messagebank. A great opportunity to stick it her opponent around Lansdown, godsells etc with her article in the paper today but she’s used her chanc to say her focus on improved drainage and question building approvals. Has she missed a key chance?

  31. Snitch says:

So glad the candidate for division 6 has finally started posting on her Facebook page. Only trouble is what is being put up and whos comments are there.

Post about fallen trees in Sundays storm along riverside drive. Posting pictures of good Samaritans pulling trees off the road is ok but down the page comes our deputy mayor letting her know he’s put in a job to TCC staff to clean it up urgently. Has walker maintained his own division first? Hardly! But lets help the celebrity candidate.

Then this morning i see a repost of a outdoor movie night by the Townsville city council. Straight from the website. One would think she’s a councillor already. Meanwhile on other candidates Facebook pages you have things like crime, water, unkept services, all things that are whats wrong with this city. But hey I’m glad I know theres a movie night coming up!!! Is this what we can look forward to in division 6?

  32. Will the real Sam shady please stand up says:

Ever since Sam Cox emotional outburst at the Pie I have felt uncomfortable. Why? I still believe Sam has more to offer than the Pink Doona lady and Fatboy Palmers lad. Sam, you need to take personal criticism with a set of broad shoulders. If you think the Pie and it’s loyal base are bastards then you don’t hear what the other Pollies and their mates are saying behind your back. Many here will support you, but you need to take the good comments with the bad. Come back on here and offer us your steps, solutions and policies to change Townsville’s slide from one into the sewer to one above ground level at least. Cheers

    • Faux pas says:

Sam Cox the candidate is a fraud. There’s an election for the winning and he’s doing sweet FA. He should step out of the way for a serious candidate to deliver what this city needs.

      • The Magpie says:

Think you’ve missed the point there. For all we’ve said in this blog, Sam at least is out there as best he can be, and while we think he could be trying harder and be a bit more mind grabbing, he is filling the role for others too cowardly and weak kneed to stand up themselves ‘too much to lose’, they say. They seem as a sacrificial lamb, with an outside chance of taking Walker Street. By not making whatever sacrifice they hadn’t the balls to make, ‘better candidates’ deserve everything they cop if this destructive, toxic woman gets back in.

  33. One legged tap dancer says:

NQ Gal, I suggest you ask Jenny Hill how much ratepayers money she stumped up to get Elton John to open the stadium.

  34. Frequent flyer says:

Cr Ann Maree Greaney was on the telly last night spruking about the new aviary down in Queens Gardens, saying the old one was past its use-by date, so council saved the day by providing a new one. She obviously has forgotten about the public outcry over the council getting rid of the old one, which led to a council backflip and the replacement.
I found it hilarious that most of the time she was talking, Channel 7 showed vision of a cockatoo.

  35. Howgood'sthis says:

It would appear that the first Cowboys home game is a now a sell out. Let the transport fun begin!

  36. Division 8 says:

Has anyone put their hand up against Maurie Snores in Div 8?

  37. The Magpie says:

Gosh, that was quick! All those dead, and the cause determined, and published. Overnight!!!! WOW.
Well done, you Brisbane boys in blue. How about sending that team north, we’ve only got one dead at traffic lights, and we’re told it could take a year to find out what happened.

  40. That man with the scooter on the Strand says:

    Hi ‘Pie,

Long time reader but first time poster. I love reading about what’s going on but I don’t know much about politics. I think David Crisafulli could be a great leader for the state actually. Is there anything we can do to help him take the leadership of his party? Does public support help? I remember talking to him in TCC days and it was pretty obvious he want just wanted to twist the arm of govt to help NQ. I hear that streak is within him still.

  41. Ratepayer says:

Over the past few weeks I’ve sent several texts to the Bully editor. Two have been published but the others, which mentioned the council’s $500 million+ debt, haven’t seen the light of day. Can someone please explain why the alarming city debt is being ignored in the run up to the local government election? Surely it is important for voters to know if candidates plan to reduce the debt, or if they plan to borrow more money to pay the mounting interest bill, thus keeping rate rises to a minimum.

  42. NQ Gal says:

Waiting for Harpic, O’Rort and Private Cupcake to make “the government is tough on crime” comments on this morning’s horrific incident involving yet another stolen car.

Everyone in that vehicle should be locked up for attempted murder.

The car was not stolen, but was a known female druggie who has not been apprehended to date

Quite a few comments came in that didn’t get published because things moved so fast they were superseded by the time they arrived, so were deleted not nto clutter up the comments section. But always appreciated when someone goes to the trouble of commenting.

  44. Critical says:

Reading that the the Indigenous juvenile hoodlums and others are taking advantage of the ‘no child shall be left behind’ policy that was complimented after the Daniel Morcombe murder. Cairns had the same problems in 2019 and had to take action to reduce the abuse of this policy as much as possible but they are still abusing the policy. Been told the the social workers and other do-gooders told them about the policy and so the abuse of the policy and bus drivers started.

  45. Concerned ratepayer says:

I went to hearveys range dump today only because i had too. You now have to sort rubbish oit at a new building before going into the main dump. Im kpt lazy and dont mind doing this and the staff are pretty good so i didn’t think it was such a big issue. However I cant see this working on a free dump weekend at all. And as i was talking one told me how many people just drive through and dont pay. They also get abused and one staff member was pushed yesterday but under tbe TCC rules if you push back its instant dismissal. What happened to self defense? How did Townsville get to this? I blame the TCC for putting staff in this situation. I can tell you it wouldhave cost a fortune to build this thing too, but i never heard about it anywhere. Another secret spend by jenny??

    • George Gently says:

A lot to say Ratepayer, as I am (a ratepayer). Well, having experienced it what exactly is your suggestion to fix it/make it better? I’m interested.

      • Concerned ratepayer says:

How about vote the right people in to start with If your a ratepayer. Apparently the staff member will be pushing charges against the person. There’s your ending. I believe people have had the mentality of ” you do it for me ” for to long in this city. Why is driving throught the dump and not paying any different a crime then walking out of big w and not paying? TCC need to surport there staff.

        • The Magpie says:

The staff member is not only right to press charges, but in fact has a responsibility to do so. Such actions can’t be tolerated, we have enough bullying and intimidation throughout stratas of this city, but at the same time, we cannot ignore that frustration grows quickly through a lack of communication from the council to the public.

          • Fishframe says:

A girl (employee) at Coles in Fairfield Centre got punched in the face recently because she challenged someone walking out and not paying. Staff member in the meat section told me they get threatened with violence almost daily by non paying thieves. They always contact the Police. Good on them.

    • Qantas Club lurker says:

Poor old Waste department at TCC.
Doesn’t matter what they do, they get a flogging

      • The Magpie says:

Yup, tend to agree, but we need … indeed have a right … to know exactly what is going on in tbhat department, wiith wholesale changes to sites and methodology, not to mention staff conditions and numbers. But The ‘Pie has received so many various reports of mismanagement from on high that he has published those views in good faith, in the hope that a definitive whistleblower will openly challenge this council’s total lack of transparency and culture of secrecy.

      • Fishframe says:

The waste department people get treated like trash. Sorry, couldn’t help it !

        • Mike Douglas says:

Fishframe , Labor Queenslands soft on crime has deteriorated so much that its not just Fairfield Central that brazen individuals are just walking out of Supermarkets with groceries and not paying its across the City . Retail staff find its too unsafe to challenge them and besides with “catch and release ” court system after Police arrest them they are back in a few days . Stockland are spending thousands extra a week to try and make the centre a safe destination and clear out the undesirables . interested in a response to Greg Dowlings no rates increase and bigger discounts for early payments . Does this put the spotlight on Team Hill candidates as voters will want to know where they stand and will the Mullet match it .

    • No bones about it says:

TCC doesn’t care about staff, dumps are chronically understaffed, in breach of environmental law, the poor worker is probs a labour hire ring in

  46. The Magpie says:

You really don’t understand English at all, do you, Townsville Bulletin?

“Enthused”? Or is it just a sloppy editing job, missing aren’t? Either way, stupid writing.

    The ‘Pie is NOT enthused.

  47. Critical says:

The information in the link is actually very concerning and scary and although it is reported to be written by a Cairns police officer he also refers to Townsville. We need to be giving all the support that we can to our brave police officers who are faced with an absolutely frustrating job protecting us every day.

I wonder how long this article will remain on-line and let’s hope the author of the letter is never identified for having the guts to reveal the hidden reality of the never ending assault on our communities by the ALP and do-gooder supported species of low life’s.

Will our three useless local state politicians respond to the issues raised in this letter doubt it as they’ll probably just put their heads further into their individual piles of bulls** t.

I’ve had my rant so read the news article and let’s hear your comments.

    https://www.tropicnow.com.au/2020/february/19/letter-from-the-frontline-what-a-cairns-police-officer-has-to-say-about-the-citys-youth-crime.html

    • The Magpie says:

Yes, that is very damning, and can’t agree more that the poor bloody coppers should not be targeted in these matters, they are out there getting injured and putting their lives on the line with knife wielding, car stealing juveniles, who, by that very term, do not make decisions of any maturity. This ijs going to get much worse in both cities before it gets better, especially with the brazen trough snurffling party hacks we were foolish enough to elect to represent us in this city.

  48. Dave of Kelso says:

Local BOM met station fully automated. The Mullet did not know. The Mullet pissed off. Phil Thompson dismisses her complaining as election politics. Great photo of a pissed off Mullet.

SCORECARD: Phil Thompson 10 Mullet NIL.

This blathering idiot of a woman gets prize bullshit quote iof the year as reported in that ABC article.

      MP rejects complaints
Cr Hill said the change had been introduced for cost cutting, not service delivery.

She and the State Labor Member for Townsville, Scott Stewart, called on the Federal Member for Herbert, Phillip Thompson, to lobby to have the decision reversed.

Their concerns have been dismissed by Mr Thompson as election politics.

“All this is is two people, the mayor and the State Labor member for Townsville, knowing they are in an election year and need to throw some mud,” Mr Thompson said.

    • The (Barely) Civil Engineer says:

Jenny must have been hiding under a rock (or a doona) for the past 18 months when BOM has been foreshadowing this move.

Other mayors in western shires have been “up Canberra’s ribs” about closing this and downgrading other stations across the north for the past couple of years, but not a peep from our fearless leader until now.

  49. Cantankerous but happy says:

Is the Mullet about to boycott the weather? Pissed off about the Townsville weather office closing the old Mullet has gone off at the federal Govt for closing the office, nice of you to keep up with current events Jenny Hill, it was announced a year ago it was going to close, talk about ignorant. And why would the Mullet care anyway, completely ignored their advise last year that it was going to piss down, and then piss down some more and a bit more after that, bloody hypocrite.

    • J.B says:

Boycott the weather- that sounds like her advice especially after last years one in 20 year night of noah

    • Jatzcrackers says:

Exactly Cankers’. She ignored most of the broad BOM advise, dithered about without a decision that should have been made and bingo, a 1 in 500 yr flood. BTW, how did they measure the flood from 500 yrs ago here in Oz ? Asking for a friend !

      • The Magpie says:

A smart adviser would have told the mayor to come out singing the praises of the automated station, making Townsville an important site chosen for cutting edge technology etc etc blah blah. Of course, she could then blame a crash of technology when the next ‘one in 5000 years’ event occurs – next October.

      • Water Water Everywhere says:

As I am sure has been mentioned on here before the 1 in 500 or 1 in 100 is a bastardised statistical expression.

        1 in 1 means there is a 100% chance
        1 in 100 means there is a 1% chance
        1 in 500 means there is a .2% chance
        etc. all based on averages

Just because something was a 1 in 500 event does not mean it cannot happen again the year after…. like winning the lottery twice, the shit sandwich lottery.

  50. City dweller says:

So jenny hill thinks Townsville, by statistics, is a very safe place to live as reported on nine news. Then goes on pricey for an interview says the crime problem according to her and people she knows is the blame of the baby bonus! WTF? Am i missing something.

    • Fishframe says:

In fairness to her, she probably suffered some head trauma in the car accident. Hard to explain otherwise.

    • Shit Dribbler says:

Just let her keep talking. The more she talks, the more people will see that it is pure shit that dribbles from her mouth. Baby bonus? Yeah, maybe 20 years ago. Today’s problem is because there is no parenting, no judicial punishment for the little shits (and don’t they know it), not enough Cops posted in the city, Judges who are weak and have no spine and a group of Councillors that have testicles the size of an ant. This is what happens when there is no accountability from the elected representatives, legal system, parents of ferals, wig wearing Judges. The place truly is fucked.

      • Dave of Kelso says:

        SD
I suspect the (so called) Youth Justice Act hobbles both the police and the judiciary. It is this Puddleduck government. What frustrates me to violence is the silence of those other politicle parties that would aspire to form government or at least hold the balance of power.

        • The Magpie says:

Let’s be clear about this, the underlying problem here is the lawmakers, who frame any legislation with an eye to the electorate, and keeping their well-fed arses on the plush at any cost. If they deem an it is important enough, they do the classic making a horse into a camel … and the over emphasise on the bleeding hearts lobby is why we are in this bind of juvenile crime merry-go-round. Neither the judiciary or the coppers can be faulted here, both run to strict terms of reference.

      • Fishframe says:

Judges generally aren’t weak. They can only work within the bounds of the Law. If they stray outside point of law, and it is successfully appealed, it creates an even bigger problem with precedent. That being said, a bad Judge can’t be sacked. They can only be dismissed by an Act of Parliament. Back to Law, Legislation is responsibility of Government, and remember, Qld has no Upper House so we get what we get.

    • Dave of Kelso says:

This is where I want to see a media release from Sam Cox repudiating the Mulett and highlighting the (so called) Youth Justice Act as the root of all these troubles. He might like to use the letter from the Cairns policeman.

      • The Obvious says:

Dave, I reckon the mullet does dribble shit but I think you might be suffering from the same affliction. Seems that every second post is from you and some (eg pubic lice) are complete and utter drivel.
Sometimes I think you might need to get a life ol mate.
        Take this as constructive criticism.
If you had to do it again, what would you differently!

      • City dweller says:

Im thinking the same thing about sam. But im also seeing alot of media with the mayor bjt they arnt including any other person to give an alternative to the story. Unless im mistaken and i havnt seen it, but its like the media are only letting mullet speak and nobody else. Not good journalism. Its not as if they cant find sam to comment. I think it looks like he’s doing more but i guess time will tell if im wrong.

The astonishers article about T.C.C. not meeting it’s obligations to the City Deal is just the tip of the iceberg on Council delayed and missed deadlines across the city just ask the business community . While the impailer and the Mullet played political games and made good productive council workers redundant projects stalled and our Councillors sat back and let this happen . State Government funding sat idle on waterfront upgrades , bus shelter took 8 years and the stadium pathways will only be completed because the astonisher outed Council . I can’t help notice that Council depots around town seem to be depleted of staff and used on projects that the Council received additional funding leaving the city looking unkept . Simply the Mullet is a political control freak playing the Labor game and whilst having written strategies on crime doesn’t show up at “ take back Townsville “ meetings and won’t let the Councillors attend . Peter Tapiolas and Lawrence Lancini summed it up “ our current Mayor is holding back Townsville “ .

    • Magic lamp says:

The City Deal memo published in the Bulletin shows what a shitshow the current council is. Shiny baubles and media stunts over doing hard work to improve our community.

  54. Molly9 says:

Read through this weeks comments, good as always, but referring to the talkfest on youth violence, I haven’t seen any reference to the local indigenous leaders attending. Given that most of the offenders are of indigenous background, I would have thought some support/comment/anything would have been a given. The only time certain members of this community ever say anything is when they express ‘outrage’ against perceived violence against themselves. Sometimes this is correct, but, there is already talk of vigilante action against the little mongrels, and, given that there are a lot of decent people in the indigenous community, I am worried that some innocent child or teenager will be targeted.

    • The Magpie says:

      Best comment of the week.

    • Mangrove Jack says:

Pricey was on his Radio Show Yesterday (Thurs) speaking to Russ Butler and a couple of other blokes that he referred to as “Uncles”.

During the discussion there was a lot of concern shown about the current situation with youth crime, and how things like Cleveland were simply not the answer. Appears that these “Uncles” have the support of the Police, but I didn’t hear how anything was actually going to come together.

I do hope that the resources and knowledge they have at their disposal can be put to good use to help the present situation improve.

      • The Magpie says:

You make a very valid point, MJ. We hear so much about elders and police and other various concerned groups, saying ‘this isn’t the way’ ‘ Locking up kids only creates crime’ and ‘this is what we need to do’ but beyond keeping kids out of detention, no matter what they’ve done, there is never any coherent plan or explanation of of intended action and outcomes explained to the wider public (apart from the ill-advised ‘buddy copper’ nonsense). It’s all very well for every ‘aunty’ and ‘uncle’ (notice never ‘father’ or ‘mother’) to deplore the current system, but we never hear of their alternative in any detail. Punishment as a deterrent and a measure of retribution applies across the judicial board, but not, apparently, to indigenous youth. This is made worse by some elders that The ‘Pie has heard describe these juvenile car thieves and burglars as ‘larrikins’, ‘little rascals’, and ‘tearaways’, as though they commit some minor ‘rite of passage’ misdemeanours on the way to adulthood. ‘We were all kids once, eh?’ doesn’t wash … The ‘Pie was kid and, like most Australian kids of all generations, never stole a car, or broke into a house, or tried to hijack a vehicle, in his life … and remembers the shame and fear of retribution when, on a dare, he got caught shoplifting a packet of Jaffas from J.C Penny’s when he was 10.

Well, we should be thankful for small mercies, at least Gracelyn Smallwood has kept her racist trap shut for once, even she apparently realises her racist bile about it all being ‘whitey’s fault’ has no place in this escalating situation.

The term Uncle is a respectful one, nothing to do with relatives, although it is to do with family, as they are all related.

The solution is enabling the Uncles and Aunties, but without the leftie bias, in much the same way as my parents were able to give me a clip over the ear ( they never did, I was and still am a saint), the elders can apply Aboriginal lore, notice the spelling, to achieve a similar effect.

          • The Magpie says:

The ‘Pie’s understanding is that the terms stem from the social structure of aboriginal society, an indigenous version of the western idea that it takes a village to raise a child, something long forgotten in both cultures. And of course, The Magpie should know about this, because he’s a black’n’white fella heh heh heh.

          • The Magpie says:

  56. The Stockman says:

This just landed in my inbox from Townsville Enterprise. SAM COX JUST GOT MY VOTE.

“Today Townsville Mayoral candidate Sam Cox outlined his position on the Townsville City Council’s future funding arrangement with Townsville Enterprise if elected in the upcoming local government election.

Mr Cox’s policy position indicates a reduction of almost half of council’s annual funding contribution to Townsville Enterprise.

Sam Cox proposing funding cuts is cutting jobs for this community.

Through this partnership with our five mayors we have stood up for Adani, stood up for water security, stood up for new dams and stood up for tourism. That is what our partnership stands for and that is what this investment supports.

Our local business community supports our advocacy efforts through a much larger funding contribution than council provides and considering $400 million worth of commitments was secured in the past 12 months alone that is more than a return on investment.

The Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Hells Gates and Big Rocks Weir, Haughton Duplication Pipeline, the Museum of Underwater Art, Port Channel Widening, Sun Metals Zinc Refinery, approval of the Carmichael Mine and opening the Galilee Basin, and MMG Dugald River FIFO Hub is what a community can achieve when we work together.

When our community is in desperate need of jobs, now is the time for a stable and strong partnership between Townsville Enterprise and council.

The real risk here is that the biggest winners from any suggestion of cutting our advocacy efforts in Brisbane and Canberra, and breaking down this winning formula, will be other regions, not Townsville. “

      • The Magpie says:

The best part of his statement is that he will end the hopelessly compromised rort of the mayor being on the board. The council should take back the role of attracting investment, the Dudley Do Nothings are not even effective middlemen.

    • Critical says:

TEL’s media release tells us that there has been $400m of commitments made in the past 12 months but fails to tell us of the real measurable outcomes for the North Queensland and Townsville Community that would stand up to independent audit examination. Come on TEL if you wish to withstand funding cuts then you need to provide TCC and other councils with real measurable outcomes for the funding provided. TEL’s probably also Shit scared that the other councils will also follow Sam Cox and cut funding to them.

      • The Magpie says:

KPIs and a complete failure to involve the community through an effective media program has long been the glaring and arrogant failure of this mob, along with a board chairman who is hopelessly compromised and a CEO who makes an art form of confusing slick talk with effective communication.

        This is the Cox pledge.

        • Trevor C says:

Wow, way to go Sam Cox – I get that your campaign advisors thought this was a free strike at Jenny Hill and taps into the psyche of punters who don’t understand what orgs like TEL do behind the scenes, but it would seem neither do you?

Advocating for separation of the Council and Mayor from strategic involvement with some of the biggest businesses and employers in the town who are the volunteer Board Directors of this not-for-profit organisation, seems like a good idea to you does it?

Telling TEL’s 400 plus members and their employees of mostly the entire tourism industry that they only deserve a Council lackey in their Board room, a good vote winner ?

I think this is one of the most fundamental blind spots in politicians at the moment…. this failure to understand that:

          1. a Government is an entity that can only operate in its restricted jurisdictional space and at its core only a body of regulatory CONTROL. As such, they are never going to be able to do much about economic development and job creation other than pull the right regulation levers and facilitate;

          2. The business and investment community is the fundamental agent of CHANGE and INNOVATION in a capitalist economy. They can focus their money, their investment and the resultant jobs anywhere. It is they who are and always will be the real reason a city or area lives or dies economically not its politicians, because the private sector has the freedom to choose to do that in any place they like.

Love TEL’s agenda or hate them, don’t forget that the full Board and membership there is the powerhouse behind this organisation and the Board Directors between them are representative of the entire business community and employ many of the region.

TEL was set up to tap INTO what that business community could do for the city that the Council cannot and should not, as we have seen recently with Jenny Hill/Adele Young crazy ideas.

As a community, we lose that at our own risk.

Wouldn’t the better policy position be to actually work better and more closely with them in partnership on a joint agenda using their skill set, to achieve more jobs, economic growth and outcomes for our city?

          • The Magpie says:

Bravo, written sincerely from the wallet, Trev. This is a load of self-serving tosh and you know it, you’re on the run fella, because Cox has found out what readers of this blog have known for years … the depth of ineptness, mismanagement and narrow self-interest of the TEL board and CEO.

Gotta love the logic, too, when you bluster ‘Love TEL’s agenda or hate them, don’t forget that the full Board and membership there is the powerhouse behind this organisation and the Board Directors between them are representative of the entire business community and employ many of the region.’ Only thing to say to that is job well done, Trev … all those for lease signs are illusions, eh? Oh and another prime bit of thought-disordered twaddle – ‘TEL was set up to tap INTO what that business community could do for the city that the Council cannot and should not, as we have seen recently with Jenny Hill/Adele Young crazy ideas.’ Ignoring the fact that not a single one of your dynamic board or management would have had the guts to say that to the face of either Hill or Young, you believe that the ratepayers should foot the bill for things you want the council to foot the bill for things they ‘cannot or should not do’.

Keep up your panicked whingeing, Trev, happy to publish it to demonstrate how Cox has finally laid a heavy glove on you bludgeing swindling pretenders.

What is it about the cap-lock key that makes one look like a blathering idiot?

          • TheOtherGuy says:

If TEL was set up for the business community because the “Council cannot and should not,” then why is the council even there and using a not unsubstantial amount of ratepayers funds? Moreover, it is the primary role of state government to have the strategies for jobs and economic growth, just like crime, not local government. I think it would be an interesting legal question as to whether the TCC even had the power to spend money for the Adani airstrip outside the local government area. How is that for local rule or local government? If the Chamber of Commerce can be self funded, so can TEL. The TCC should not have presence at all.

          • Cantankerous but happy says:

What does your C stand for Trevor? Talk about a gullible dickhead, so TEL are representative of the Townsville business community, what a load of horse shit, the vast majority of people employed in this town work for top 200 listed companies, that in the main couldn’t give a shit about the amateur failures at TEL, and couldn’t give a toss if it closed up tomorrow. and if you think these hopeless wankers generate business activity you are seriously delusional, latest post from Pete Faulkner at Conus, Townsville added a pathetic 16 businesses to the total last year, ( one six) its not a typo, good thing we have TEL hey, or it might have been only 15.

            http://www.conus.com.au/2020/02/business-count-data-shows-the-rise-of-the-uber-driver/

          • Trevor C says:

Magpie, what you call self interest, and ineptness, I call someone at least getting off their arse and having a go.. ITs an easy point score to say that Board members are self interested because of their work or projects but this town would be better off with far more “self interested” business people doing lots more…..

All you Ratepayers (and Sam Cox) have a good hard look at the rates schedule paper attached to your recent Notices. It’s the huge rates paid from the commercial landowners, industrial and business land etc that keep TCC afloat, not our little house rates in the burbs and if we dont do everything we can as a city to get more of that we are all in the shite.

A cost saving to COuncil is one thing, but a city who’s only jobs are the on time and shiny council garbage men and park gardeners ( which Cox promises) is a dead duck and anyone who thinks a well funded TEL type org is not desperately necessary for a town like ours right now is an idiot.

          • The Magpie says:

Oh dear, where to start on that little flounce? We are well past the age of ‘having a go’ and the amateurish risk that implies … and certainly not with ratepayers money. We elect a council to do much of what TEL pretends to do – thus letting the council off the hook by copping the well deserved flack for incompetent management, although they are the ones who should be getting off their arses. It has long been pointed out by others that a council department staffed by two or three proven professionals could do just about all that TEL says it does, and do it better – one would start by having the head of that department largely based in Brisbane and in Canberra. Tourism perhaps an exception. That you say that a well funded TEL-type (uh oh, going to change the goal posts with adding ‘type’ in there?) organisation is desperately needed in this town like ours right now ignores the fact that the sheer incompetence and featherbedding leadership arrangements of this council and TEL is in a large part responsible for the city being in such a ‘desperate’ situation.

And BTW Daddy Warbucks, the folks out there will love to learn about their ‘little house rates in the burbs’ being of little or no consequence in your brave new world. A lovely airey wave of ‘born to rule’ arrogance there, Trev, mate.

This idiot thinks you have a deeply vested interest in your argument.

          • Trevor C says:

Pretty unfair on the city Cantankerous to pick statistics of a year with a major disaster to make a criticism? Any comparable stats from elsewhere? Maybe I’m just a positive bloke, but I think the TSV business community here is amazing in those circumstances to even have had 16 new businesses and your article reference even notes that, even though you didn’t. Not sure if I had been in the business game still I would have had the resilience to deal with what some of them did to keep going last year. You?

TEL had a role in that by the way in keeping many of the business here, still here. So did the chamber, and many other Not for profit organisations who receive some government funding. Someone had to do that while the Council did its other jobs too.

And if those big businesses you refer to didn’t care about TEL, I wonder why many of them are members of TEL too, and do this when asked by TEL to contribute:

            https://www.townsvilleenterprise.com.au/business-community-rallies-behind-north-queensland/

Clearly many people of this city dont know anything about TEL, and clearly many on this page dont – that makes them apathetic to what is going on in their community, not that orgs like TEL are unnecessary. if you all want to see TEL do different things, or dont like the chairman, there is a solution to that, become a member of it and vote. But dont throw the baby out with the bath water to allow a cheap election shot by your favourite new toy candidate. He’s got less runs on the board so far than you just accused TEL of.

          • The Magpie says:

You really can’t help yourself, can you Trevor? There’s a hell of difference between being negative and being blind.

And another great quote: Clearly many people of this city don’t know anything about TEL, and clearly many on this page dont – that makes them apathetic to what is going on in their community, not that orgs like TEL are unnecessary. Trev, You are probably a newcomer to these pages … amazing what an election will attract – so let The ‘Pie assure you that for more than a decade he has been highlighting the fact that TEL, under a succession of leaders has not communicated in any meaningful, professional way with the wider public since Brett Judge left – about 10 years ago. They just suddenly bob up with the sketchiest of outlines about what they are doing, and it is easily proven they claim credit for projects and outcomes which we the great unwashed never knew they were involved in, in many cases because they weren’t. The lamentable tenure of David Kippin – a bloke who awarded himself a cushy quarter of a million package over his brief and forgettable tenure which ended in 2014 – once sniffily suggested that TEL was a member-based organisation, so was only accountable to the membership, and wasn’t accountable to the general public – notwithstanding the ratepayers $750,000 annual soaking.

Kippin’s vast self-overvaluation also led to another disaster, Little Patty O’Callaghan replaced Kippin because she was willing to take gets less than half his gouge, and was and is far more meekly compliant with the board than any professional outsider brought in to run the joint.

Yup, just the sort of organisation we should be rushing to join, eh, Trev? And best try to remember, blindness to the facts and truth is the worst sort of negative attitude. exposing shortcomings and waste of public money, while disappointing, is anything but negative.

        • Trevor C says:

You know Magpie, you are right. All this new time on my hands has been giving me much more thinking time on what is my own highly vested interest right now – what I want to fill the days with. I always thought the model of TEL was a great one when I younger and had great admiration for some of the business men of this city who set it up and what it used to do even then behind the scenes of the city. That model hasn’t changed.

This discussion has inspired me to go down and volunteer for them. I understand they have a bunch of other deluded souls who also do that.

Looking forward to many trips there – parking in town and walking over the bridge

    • The Magpie says:

This may seem strange, but The ‘Pie is with you on this, and agrees that there is too much ‘cutting off nose to spite the face’ when it comes to the stadium … The Magpie has always opposed the perceived wisdom, and lack of credible explanation for the massive move and subsequent waste of money that could have been diverted to more urgent matters ($290million would put a lot of coppers on the ground in the ‘burbs, but I know, I know, it doesn’t work that way). And it was indignation at the dumb lack of traffic planning with the stadium that shows the sheer incompetence and political panic of all involved. But the stadium is there now, and it would be more than churlish and self-defeating to express any glee at possible failure, rather than hope things work out. A lot of it won’t and will only be fixed with time and lots more money, but if we do want genuine progress for our city, we should make the best of what exists, while not ignoring the pitfalls and lack of real leadership that has led to a less than ideal outcome.

Elton John? Pffft, whatever, a candle in the wind.

    • Lord Howard Hertz says:

Hey Jonesy, hope you’re also looking forward to not finding your car there when you return … the little bastards will surely make hay out of this shemozzle, with coppers needed closer to the stadium. And of course if more police are allocated to the CBD area with the extra parking, guess what sort of mayhem the little snots will do in the more lightly patrolled ‘burbs while residents are at the footy. The ‘Pie’s right, great fucken planning.

      • Alahazbin says:

Hey Lordy! The little snouts won’t have keys. They are not smart enough to steal them. Maybe vandalise them though.

  59. Fishframe says:

Sam has my vote on that basis as well. TEL are self serving and just want to protect their cushy overpaid jobs for doing stuff all. They are the biggest waste of time and take credit for absolutely everything Townsville gets even when they are not involved in it. They should have stayed as a tourism agency and nothing else.

  60. Mangrove Jack says:

Pricey’s Interview with the local “Uncles” on radio the other day. Sorry for not adding the link previously, but this was well worth another listen, and something that everyone should get behind and support.

    https://omny.fm/shows/triplem-townsville-breakfast/youth-crime-whats-the-solution

    • The Magpie says:

These blokes are genuine in their suggestions to stem juvenile crime and for some errant kids, their ‘back to the bush’ scheme would work, butv there are a couple problem areas with the interview. On more than half a dozen occasions, Pricey emphasised – without offering any evidence – that the crime wave was both white and black juveniles … Pricey clearly needed to virtue signal that he isn’t racist, which he certainly isn’t in The ‘Pie’s experience. But the anecdotal and actual evidence is that this is overwhelmingly an aboriginal/TI led crime wave. This is borne out when we keep being told of the lop sided numbers of indigenous youth in the court system? And the stoic sensible ‘uncles’ plan is to take the kids into the bush and teach them about their cultural background, with no drugs or alcohol allowed. This pre-supposes two things … white kids wouldn’t be suitable for such an otherwise worthy scheme, and from can be made out in the interview, it is a voluntary matter, and assumes the cooperation of the kids. Here is a classic case of diluted cultural values, because these kids have been brought up in an urban culture that has twisted original indigenous social values of sharing and caring. If they are forced to ‘go bush’ for a spell, away from everything they’ve grown accustomed to, some will get back on the right path, but others will build an even greater simmering resentment against authority. If it is voluntary, lots won’t go. And there’s the question of families, which are increasingly being seen, correctly, as the root cause of the criminality … what do these kids come back to?

This has so easily become a circular argument because of the tip-toeing pussy-footing politics surrounding indigenous matters.

So it’s all very well for The ‘Pie to play his usual role of spotting flaws in the well-meaning arguments of others (or not so well meaning when it comes to Mayor Mullet), so what would he suggest as a remedy? There is no silver bullet, but it would be money well spent to smother this section of youth with activity choices, with real goals, incentives – including even cash prizes, trophies, trips away – across a whole range of pursuits. Peer pressure may then become a positive thing. Idle hands do mischief make, and all that. Not the whole answer, but maybe a start. Also not closing facilities like the Castle Hill PCYC would help.

  61. The Magpie says:

It doesn’t get much more arrogant than this. Monkey puzzle traffic arrangement for the Total Tools stadium open day today included a lane of main artery Dean Street closed off for buses only … and for advertising for friends of the mayor.

Wonder how long this would’ve lasted if it was an independent (a REAL independent) candidate? Should this not have been towed with the appropriate fine?

As for the blatant arrogance of the Mayor, just leave it here to show the (compelled) pedestrians the contempt and sheer arrogant stupidity of this blight on the once vibrant city.

      • The Magpie says:

Oh, but the real action is on the other side opposite. Somehow, although there has been evidence of a new stadium ijn the vicinity for a while … oh, let’s say 6 or 7 years …. only now is one of the hoped for major pedestrian access routes being upgraded. Only NOW!!! Council short cash? If ever the story of this stadium is written, it should be called The Foresight Saga – A Tragedy.

        • Achilles says:

Are those trucks and workers TCC or a subbie? Hard to tell from the pic but I can’t see the TCC logo on vehicles, nor on workers reflective vests.

        • City dweller says:

I agree with you about the stadium and hope it does help Townsville even though I want it to fail for the mullet and 3 stooges. Hope that makes sence. And thats my opinion because of what you just showed us. The stadium should be celebrated and from what im told it is well presented. ( shade sails still need to face a cyclone) but the arrogance of putting political signage up knowing alot of people will see it just stinks. Ive been told Corey Davis has a semi trailer, will that attract parking fines?? Hes got a case to appeal that if he does based on this outright unfair propaganda.

        • In the Doghouse says:

Hello Malcolm. The councillors partner here. This was not arrogance. This was an honest and unintentional mistake. My intention was to collect trailer last night but for various reasons was not able to. Had no idea this was to be an overflow bus lane today. Only became aware of this when heading out this morning, to move trailer. Spoke with and apologised to the traffic coordinators. All fine and said trailer was removed by the time proceedings began at 9am and before bus lane was required. A little birdie has just been reminded of a bet you had in 2016 and that you still owe the Divisional councillor a bottle of French Champagne. Double or nothing??

          • The Magpie says:

What bet? And with whom? Certainly don’t remember anything involving Ms Greany. (PS from pedant’s corner … mistakes by nature are all unintentional.)

          • City dweller says:

How about you ask Ann if sacking so many staff and voting for it unanimously was an honest mistake and not arrogance. And can you put a recent picture of her there because that’s nothing like her now. Thats not a mistake thats intentional.

    You stink!

  63. Strand Ghost says:

    Hi Magpie
Corey Davis’s semi trailer is parked on a private block of ground at Garbutt with permission from owner.
Also as i drove out of Fairfield Central this morning MessageBank Walker’s dual cab with advertising all over it illegally parked on road as you exit the shopping centre ,Parked in a No Parking area on side of road, obviously one rule for the Council and one for everyone else

  64. Ducks Nuts says:

On Thursday morning I drove down Queens road. Liam Mooney’s trailer, with both his and Mullets faces on the signage, was parked on the Ross Creek. It was parked right beside the Estuarine Crocodile warning sign. It seemed somehow appropriate.

  65. Strand Ghost says:

    Hi Dave
Tried to report Mooney’s ute being parked illegally on Balls lane, was pushed off too 3 different people and was told not their problem report it to state department on 1300 number WTF its a gee up,it with take 2 mths to be investigated, nobody cares them the election is over, this council is so bad, as they say a drovers dog could do better??
