Lots of sudden scrabbling and squeaking behind the political skirting boards, now Troy Thompson has realised the jig is up and has resigned as mayor. But the agony isn’t over for us just yet … early indications are we could be in for a Forest Gump box of chocolates election … God know what we’re gunna get.
Thompson, who resigned to avoid the incomplete CCC findings being made public, has announced he’ll run again, saying there’s nothing to stop him. But is that right? One of a couple of things would stop him dead in his tracks.
And are we in for more disappointment with Lansdown?
The LNP goes back to the future, re-badging their 2012 kiddy crim boot camp policy as Regional Reset. But with an alarming major change in emphasis that will assuredly doom it, too, from the start. And so it should.
And in America, free speech gets up from the canvas to give Trump a black eye.
We soldier on in The Nest regardless, but always appreciate those who can help out with the inevitable costs incurred by an endeavour like this. If you think your weekly Nest is worthy of your support, the donate link is at the bottom of the blog. We could do with it about now. Thanks.
The Con Man Quits And Half Townsville Line Up For The Egg And Spoon Race
No matter what he says, TwoNames Thompson was clearly spooked by the CCC information passed on to him by Minister Leahy, so after a day or two of pouty sulks, he gave up his mayoral position and, since the allegations must be of such a damning nature, he forwent the last couple of weeks of his $5000 a week free ride on the gravy train. Be interesting to know how much super he had stashed away for him courtesy of a weak-kneed government and hapless minister.
But sticking to his MO of pointless bravado, this truly despicable sialoquent ramped up his charade of fake law and moral misjudgement, continuing to spit in the face of Townsville by declaring he’d done nothing wrong and would run in the now inevitable mayoral by-election. Which The ‘Pie thinks is bloody damn decent of him, the one noble gesture of defeat he has ever uttered, allowing the electorate to let him know precisely what they think of him.
But hang on a sec ..,. can he run? On the face of it yes, but here’s a couple of matters canvassed by readers during the week.
The council reprimanded him for sending an ‘inappropriate and unfair’ email to a council staffer, and voted that he pay for his own ‘conduct training’ . The question here is does he have to prove he has done suitable conduct training before being eligible to stand as a candidate?
And of course, there is always the matter of the CCC findings that led the minister to issue a show cause notice. If the CCC evidence went so far as to justify a show cause notice, how can he possibly stand? He thinks his resignation will shield from having the findings released, but since he himself has them, how can he not release them if he is serious about transparency, integrity and honesty while campaigning to return as mayor? The full stop with exclamation mark to all this is if the CCC release their findings. The CCC is the only other entity that can release the details apart from Thompson.
We now wait to see how much is Sov Cit MyPlace pals will pony up for his campaign, if it ever does actually get off the ground.
The ‘Pie’s bet: he’ll pull out at the last minute, Michelle’s magic crystals having forewarned him of the doom approaching, and a rush of reality will prevail.
And about fucking time.
At Least This Time Around, We’ll Have A Choice … Premier Crisafulli’s Candidate, Or Someone Else
But whoever, this time around, we will actually have to vote FOR a candidate, unlike last time when the overwhelming urgency was to vote AGAINST someone. Our choice was limited, something the arrogant Thompson has never admitted. Instead, he falsely claimed a mandate, which is given only on policy, not personality.
The ‘Pie understands the premier himself tapped Nick Dametto to have a run, whose resignation leaves KAP one down and open to losing Hinchinbrook. But the calm acceptance of Dametto’s resignation by the KAP hierarchy shows plainly that some sort of state-level deal has been done in Brisbane, and Crisafulli could have a like-minded person as mayor of the major regional city in NQ. Dametto himself says his connections to the state government makes him a strong contender for mayor, but around here, given the ebb and flow of sentiment on key policies, that might not be the smartest boast. And if the premier was worried about Nick’s ill-judged pic with neo-nazis at the recent Townsville rally, he had a super sub standing in the wings to covertly carry the Crisafulli colours.
The recently resigned CEO of Regional Development Australia (Townsville and NWQ), Wayde Chiesa, recently stepped down after four years in the job, but with no apparent plans for a new gig. That in itself is a bit unusual where there is no hint of scandal in the stationery cupboard. But Mr Chiesa is apparently well regarded , and is a former TCC employee in charge of City Activation, whatever bullshit make-work position that may be. But at the time of writing he seems to have missed out on the premier’s patronage this time around.
However, the final field is yet to be sorted out.
And It Ain’t Gunna Be No Field Of Dreams
And crikey , what a possible line-up, a panoply of choice that Barnum and Bailey would be proud of . .. a barroom brawler who didn’t even win that one, a state MP who canoodles with the jackboot faction, a former councillor who is said the state MP’s good mate, a local businessman with a history of failure and incompetence, a former public servant who thinks she deserves the job for just sticking around Jenny long enough, and three sitting councillors, two of whom haven’t a hope. And an honest but unelectable bloke named Harry Patel, God bless him.
Not much point in delving deeper at this point, some may get the tenor of their popularity before having their egos pricked and their wallets picked for the $250 nomination fee.
So let’s talk more when he know for sure whose sticking their heads up.
But Here’s A Bit Of Curious Info
A knowledgable insider reckons there is some sort of swap deal between Dametto and Molachino (the latter double crossed by Jenny Hill over a resignation promise and backing him for mayor). Dametto and Molachino are good mates and conjecture is that Frothy won’t run for mayor, but will have a shot at taking over Dametto’s Hinchinbrook seat. Molachino has always been close to KAP folks, so that makes sense.
And … steel yourselves …
After a period of licking her wounds and keeping a low profile, Jenny Hill is apparently starting to become politically active again, but for the moment, very much in the background. She recently combined her Railway Estate Branch with the Currajong Branch, which just happens to be the richest ALP branch in Herbert. Works well if you are a member of their branch and want a donation towards your campaign. Anyone who has observed Jenny over the years knows she always has a plan and a reason behind these sorts of actions. There have been murmurs that she might stand again, but The ‘Pie doubts it, Jenny may be many things, but she’s not stupid. But let’s see the field before we draw a line through that idea.
State or senate aspirations are more likely.
The Kid Goes Back To The Future, But The Wheels Are Sure To Fall Off This Reheated De Loren Of A Policy
Remember Campbell Newman’s big Boot Camp policy to straighten out, by gum, yes, juvenile offenders? It was so unworkable and such a dimwitted social policy, it was scrapped in 2015, the trials ultimately deemed an “expensive failure’ due to poor planning, lack of transparency, and inconclusive effectiveness.
Well, guess what, it’s back, but this time with the more upmarket buzzy title of Regional Reset program.
The official description of this truly dense policy – God knows who advocated revisiting this idiocy – tells us that this program will offer intensive, short-term intervention for at-risk children aged 12-17, combining digital detox, early mornings, bush walks, and education with cognitive behavioral therapy and mentorship to prevent youth crime and provide a path for positive change. These programs provide a structured environment focused on building discipline, life skills, and resilience through military-style training and post-camp support to address issues like school disengagement, family instability, and early signs of substance abuse.
The lunacy of this utter codswallop lies in a vital change .. the emphasis is going to be on ‘at risk’ kids, 12 to 17, NOT NECESSARILY OFFENDERS. Just a ‘you need smartening up son, off you go’ purely on the recommendation of a school teacher or a police officer. From the information The ‘Pie has seen, unless it is an offender, no judicial directive is required. Parents can also seek that their children be sent away, sometimes hundreds of kilometres for one to three week camps. And they will be shoved there unwillingly, having committed no crime – just judged ‘you’re good for it ‘. Christ, how do you spell ‘counter productive ? Being uplifted … perhaps grabbed off the street is a bit too dramatic … and frog-marched into a totlly alien ‘military-style’ environment in such a jarring manner, will likely have one of two effects on children … total alienation from any form of authority …. or suicide. If you go to jail, there’s been a process that seeps through the thickest skull, but if you’ve done nothing but looked like you might, you have every right to believe you’ve been victimised in extremis.
This is Trumpian in its blind stupidity.
Be assured, The ‘Pie hasn’t gone soft, he just hates stupid policies that aren’t thought through, (cancelling the car immobiliser program for instance) or are cobbled together to appease a public justifiably pissed off with the lack of workable policies to keep us safe. And it’s only a layman’s guess, but taking a non-offending child away in this manner, with all its inherent risks of unintended consequences, is very legally challengeable.
So what’s you’re answer, you bellow at The Magpie? Answer, The ‘Pie doesn’t know what it is, but he knows what it isn’t. And this isn’t it.
You could make a TV comedy in the setting of one of these camps, kids running rings around the do-gooders. Only problem is, it wouldn’t be funny, more likely a tragedy.
Sex Lies and Barrel Scrape
In an emerging swerve into greater irrelevance, The Bulletin takes a bellyflop into the bottom of the barrel, answering the question, what’s the difference between ignorant, click-bait social media posts, and the Townsville Bulletin. Answer: increasingly nothing.
But the biggest lie the paper tells is about itself that is the most unbelievable thigh-slapper of the week/month/year. But before we get to that, let’s take a wade through the week’s sewer. ‘Readership engagement’ is the Bulletin’s euphemism for its prurient policy of making excuses for sexual titillation with pointless non-news like this.
This, and the recent forerunner of where the state’s most violent killers are doing time (so what?) serves absolutely no community benefit and just gives the paper the pointless opportunity to revisit the darkest sides of our society.
But this week saw another shift that moved the Bulletin firmly into direct competition with the more free-wheeling language of the internet.
And if that was as subtle as a grenade in a bowl of porridge, this one attempts plodding crude humour about crime.
Adding to this clearly discerned shift into social media trivia and crassness is the policy of cheapening the editorial space, which Poulson fills mainly with earnest if poorly argued opinions about serious issues. But even the tone of her pursed-lipped mimsy mewling is immediately nullified by the new addition of a second editorial under the banner ‘And Another Thing …’ , which usually gives oxygen to matters a real paper would simply ignore. Like this …

And it’s never a week worth savouring without one of stenographer Lighton Smith’s brazen plagiarism of media releases – yes, mate, it is ‘permitted plagiarism’ because you put your name to what others have written without acknowledgement. And you publish such media releases unchallenged or sullied with original comment based on questions. He doesn’t even write the misleading headline that decides a very nondescript building on the fringe of the CBD is ‘historic’ and its refit into an everyday office area as ‘dramatic’.
yousee, Lighton, this would all be fine if you just didn’t put your name to them
And we are always entertained by the imaginative use of English by the anonymous click-bait writers. This one suggested a TCC union dispute in a school headmaster’s office.
But the biggest lie belongs to the Bulletin’s general manager/advertising boss Suzanne Wilson, when she allows the Townsville Bulletin to make this risible claim when you google it.

84,000 weekdays? 104,000 Saturday? Not in your wildest, Suzy darlin’. Pull the other one, it sings Ave Maria.
Even before the accelerating circulation slide, as recently as 10 years ago, the Bulletin’s print run was dwindling to below 20,000 weekday papers, and there was and is anecdotal evidence that digital subscriptions (closely guarded CinC secret) were and are, to be generous, negligible. To suggest that fully half of population of Townsville accesses the weekend Bulletin is an insult to the intelligence, second only to the absurd weekday figure. Even its heyday, the Bulletin never cracked 50,000 readership. And in those days, figures were only covertly manipulated, risking regulatory punishment for in effect, lying to advertisers about the bang they would get for their buck. Thjose rules disappeared more than a decade ago.
Dodgy mayors, lazy councillors and rorting outfits like TEL aren’t this city’s only problems … without a credible community news platform that leads with maturity instead of following the lowest common denominator of public accountability is a damaging and hypocritical circumstance for a paper to allow itself to sink into.
Brief Memo To Leighton Smith
Perhaps you might like to go behind the scenes with this story from last Monday …
… and have a closer look into the background and timelines surrounding this bloke, Quinbrook’s spokesman on the investment crowd’s plans for Lansdown.
Now, The ‘Pie s not saying Mr Restall is some sort of shady character, but we’ve been down this track before. And more than once. So there can be no harm in having a bit of a nose around. When you start throwing out truly absurd figures like $8billion … $8billion, Leighton, spare a moment for a little thinkette about that … it would be wise to cover all journalistic bases, wouldn’t it?
Hint: Mr Restall’s available background biography appear to raise a question or two, like just how did he end up representing a company planning an $8billion (that’s $8BILLION, Leighton, get it?) investment in remote north Queensland, while operating out of a mall shop front on the Gold Coast in a office rental building. He certainly seems an experienced and indeed successful businessman, having started two bio-power generating plants in Byron Bay before taking a few years off from that to establish the Byron Bay distillery. Now all this this may well be on the up and up, but the clearly evidenced entrepreneurial side of Mr Restall begs a few questions on behalf of a city that’s been taken for several rides by carpetbaggers in recent years. And doing that is the job of the paper of record. For which you toil, Mr Smith.
And don’t forget, Leighton, that is $8billion being invested in Lansdown. Please, wake up, mate.
Looking forward to seeing what you find, and sincerely hope you prove The ‘Pie a silly old sausage.
*** Please note, Pat Driscoll on the right in the first photograph is about the only genuine person whose been involved in Lansdown so far, with the DriveIt facility which he has championed for so long now a reality. Well done, sport.
Amerika
The New Star Strangled Banner
In a way, Trump’s invasion of the lounge and bedroom activities of America – i.e incessant TV watching – is perhaps his most dangerous popularity killer yet. Politicians have always used bread and circuses to curry voter favour, but with the Orange Abomination’s whacky but unfunny ignorance of his financial decisions making the ‘bread’ part a negative, he has left h just the circus. And now he’s gone and shot the lions, frayed the trapeze ropes and ordered that punters to leave the tent. While muted by the Charlie Kirk/Jimmy Kimmel circus, the blow-back rage at the unwarranted suspension of the popular Kimmel over comments regarding the politics involved of Kirk’s murder was widespread and grew exponentially. To the extent, Big Corporate now face a no-win choice … death by presidential interference over business matters that are none of his business, or death by viewer starvation. Disney, currently negotiating a broadcast regulatory deal with Trump is the one which felt the most overt public heat over Kimmel’s sacking and quickly backed down.

But We All Know This …
Well, Patrick, send in your arm and I’ll autograph it.
And speaking of birds, is that the patter of little claws I hear? YES it is!! Old friends the Curlews, of the 12th Tee, Rowes Bay have welcome a new addition.
…………….
Fun and games galore in store, and we’ll be here to report it all. If you are just itching to unload a burdensome dollar or two, the link to make a Nest donation is below.

Twonames will be seething at the LNP decision to support Demetto running for Mayor. To be honest, either Demetto or Frothy would probably do a half decent job, especially when compared to the other cookers and fruitcakes expressing their loving interest in wearing the possum furs.
I wonder if Twonames will start of his campaign with “let me be clear”? How often does the fuckwit parrot that saying! But I’m sure that when he loses the upcoming by-election he will do a Trump and accuse the ECQ of vote rigging and acting against a democratic system.
In some ways it will be a long few months, but by Christ it’s going to be fun to watch. Poor Magpie, you are meant to be retired mate, but you’re going to be busier than ever as the Nest will be running hot!!
It will be a mini-disaster – and unforgivable – if the by-election is postal ballot only. That would invite a new round of vituperation, and not just from TwoNames if he ends being a demolished candidate. Admittedly, we could be getting election weary, but what sort of price is it to pay giving up half an hour to go out and vote for good governance. We have all seen what disruption the wrong choice can do.
PR, Speaking of the ECQ, I hope they do their ‘due diligence’ on all mayoral candidates this time around. Surely, if there is an unpublished CCC report out there, that’s enough to barr two names from standing.
Dametto would be as bad as two names. Given his track record.
They all have something in the backgrounds that will invite nibbles on their bums.
Agree. Dametto is the worst possible choice. We might as well elect Pete Hegseth. They have similar values.
No one will ever be as bad as two names. We hit the bottom of the barrel with that one. Dametto will at least unify the councillors.
How will Dametto unify the Councillors?
And perhaps more to the point, why are they considered not unified at the moment? The Mayor Mullet aerobics class is long a thing of the past. And that wasn’t unity, that was cowardice and self-interest.
He works well with most people except the Greens, which is well earned.
“Against him”
Frothy must be really frothing right now. He was getting ready for what he thought was his for the taking. Hinchinbrook will be right, the LNP have Andrew Cripps in the wings ready to win the by-election. 10 points to David. Master manipulator.
Another informative and entertaining blog Pie. Well done to you mate as you got to meet the looming ‘deadline’ with the AFL Grand Final played right in the middle of probably the Nests busiest time of the week !
And what a game it was ! The whole event from start to finish was all class and the Lions far too much of that class and power to grind the Cats into the MCG turf !
Your ‘send me your tattooed arm’ comment reminded me of the little girl who writes to Santa requesting a little brother for Christmas. Santa wrote back ‘Send me your mother’ !
Pie, don’t think there is much doubt that Thompson will withdraw from the election. He knows whats coming . I dont think he has any intention of running. The cries to “release the Thompson files” (I had to laugh) are only going to get more persistant.
Herr Dametto always seems just a little bit out there to me. It may be that hanging around the Katters has rubbed off on him or is it just Birds of a Feather?
Either way, I would not like him as Townsville Mayor.
We need a nice solid person who exudes calm after the shenanigans of Two Names. Herr Dametto is not that.
Nick is in a strong position to become mayor. He knows the system, is approachable and fairly articulate. How that translate through to his campaign will be interesting, however he has what it takes. The deluded Thompson thinks that. Nothing has changed over the past year and he thinks the people of Townsville love him. Wrong. He was voted in due to desperation, a desperate community that was sick of Hill. The community then tried Thompson, and it failed. There could be a surprise factor also, and Harpic or Messagebank may come out of the abyss and have a crack at the title, but they will fail, and so will Kippin, Hawks, Reece, or Kopittke if they decide to have a crack at the $250k job.
The ‘Pie knows Harpic has been a bit more active lately, but he would be more deluded than Thompson if he thought he would have a crack.
Thank god,
Someone’s finally remembered me.
Personally I dont really want to do it, I’ll go through the motions and spend as little money as I can on it. I’m not wasting money and time with corflutes and advertising, if you need a picture and similar to remember who you should vote for you probably shouldn’t be voting – which pretty much means some donkey vote or worst possible candidate.
I’m not standing outside schools or asking anyone to do so, its unfair on them, its a thankless task and mostly it’s older people.
To be honest im still 50/50 whether I’ll bother at all given the lacklustre performance of townsville voters. Least of all explaining the same old thing over and again , its not psychologically healthy.
Its that old adage – you can’t beat city hall. No doubt all the shills and gremlins will come pouring out of the woodwork and whoever “wins” nothing will change.
Winning as “mayor” is a zero sum game for the sane person or a bonanza for the corrupt.
I should get into motivational speaking or work for hallmark
“…given the lacklustre performance of townsville voters. Least of all explaining the same old thing over and again , its not psychologically healthy”.

Guy, you should spare your mental health (and everyone else’s) and not bother
You’ll get more votes if you change your name to something like ‘Boaty Boatface’ or perhaps ‘Butty Butthead’.
So Nick sorry Boris. What is your opinion on Robertson?
Do you mean Robinson?
Sorry, yes.
Can somebody please explain to me why Threenames keeps mentioning the thing that upsets him the most – ‘party politics’. He keeps vomiting out comments about this entire debacle involving him being about ‘politics’. What a complete and utter dumbass. Yes Troy it certainly is about politics. You see, a Mayor is a political role that sits within Council (filled with politicians) and is overseen by the state government which, you guessed it, is run by politicians. So naturally, and by default, decisions that are made are political. If you want a job that doesn’t involve a high level of politics then become a groundsman at a nursing village, or collect recyclable cans from the side of the highway and sell them. Or maybe become a seasonal lifeguard on the Strand.
Complete….utter….fuckwit.
Two names will fight to the end. When he loses by a big margin, he will be crying defamation. He wont have the money to fight it though, and would not win that court battle either way.
Nick will win by a landslide, much like he did when Labor and LNP put a few pretenders up against him at the last election. He is popular in his own electorate, and while the media only portray the noise, he has done a lot of good things to earn respect in Hinchinbrook.
For those who think Dametto would make a good Mayor, this is his statement on domestic violence (our national shame) made on ABC North Queensland breakfast radio, 14 Aug 2024:
“At some point we have to let people sort stuff out for themselves … we can’t be sending police out every time there’s a domestic incident — people need to self-govern.”
Was there any context around what he said? He wasn’t just saying something like…Don’t call the police for a parking dispute?
If he was talking about DV, then that’s fkn appalling.
He was definitely talking about DV. He criticised how domestic violence orders (DVOs) are used, saying they could be “used as weapons,” and made comments like:
“Government can’t solve every argument behind closed doors. … We’re putting too much on the police.”
“They used to leave you alone — police, government would leave you alone to self-govern in North Queensland.”
“If someone was bashing your sister, you and the cousins went around and sorted it out — nothing to see here,”
Not only did he say these things, he said them just a few weeks before the October 2024 state election – and still easily won the seat of Hinchinbrook with a primary vote of 46%+. A significant chunk of that seat is in Townsville – those suburbs north of the Bohle River like Deeragun, North Shore, Alice River and Bluewater – so Dametto is not totally unknown. Funny that Bob Katter is bagging him out in the press. I guess a rat is a rat, but is Dametto now an LNP rat?
Of course he is well known in the nothern area of Townsville, he and his family have lived in Marquise Circuit, Burdell for years now.
It is not The ‘Pie’s habit to publish even that level of vague personal information, but it will help save the old bird’s time with those comments (several received already and deleted) asking about residential eligibility.
The Daily Astonisher is having a bit of a gushathon over Dametto, possibly just to mark the perceived stark contrast between him and the only other candidate to commit to running, Thompson. But if Dametto thinks its a handy free kick for him, he’d best remember that this media attention can be a double edged cane machete, offering grist to naysayers.
The ‘Pie has nothing substantive to say about his so-far declared policies for Townsville, except to raise an eyebrow at this from today’s Daily Astonisher.
‘Redeveloping The Strand’??? The Rockpool, yes, but The Strand?
That’s the first The ‘Pie has heard of any such plan, which at this stage of this city’s priorities, would be pretty far down the list, just ahead of a cable car up Castle Hill or a spaceport at Bluewater.
I believe Dametto wants a wave pool. Something along the lines of what Les Walker proposed…
… and along the very same lines that The Magpie proposed to the councillor David Crisafulli when we sat gazing at the Duck Pond in front of the Casino during a visit to the Nest. Long before our political palooka suggested it.
(Crisafulli rather liked the idea.)
Magpie its what’s known as a “blue sky” idea and often brought on by the bright idea fairies after a few bevvies. It’s unaffordable, and unsustainable in this city. Particularly when you factor in cyclones.
Neo nazi marcher Nick need not apply.
Give Townsville someone new that may have been a mayor elsewhere. That won’t bring in political BS as Nick will. We don’t want a small man syndrome. I rather vote for Harry then give Nick or Mark a shot.
Yes, when arranging the likely candidates from the bottom up, starting with Three Names the cleanest uncompromised candidate is Harry Patel at the top of the list, if he runs.
Yes, agreed, but sadly, tyhe most ineffective who would find himself out of his depth immediately. But you have to admire him.
RLW, agreed. Note that Harry got the most votes he’d ever received last election.
At least he’s in it for the right reasons. If he had a better campaign manager he’d probably win.
Didn’t Harry originally stand for Walker street years ago so he could take on Stockland who wouldn’t buy his house for the price he wanted? So he ended up refusing to sell it to them, so Stockland built the car park around him. I always thought that was Harry but stand to be corrected if someone knows better. If it was him, he didn’t stand for the right reasons and benefit of the community, rather for personal gain.
No he did not the property hold out you are talking about was Shahid Khan … so nice bit of casual racism there, Kenny, but I guess they all look alike to you.
https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/news/elizabeth-st-resident-decided-to-stay-in-home-stockland-build-around-him/news-story/f9dd89f4c4d21cbbfdd438758333d3fe
Definitely not racism. That’s a fucking stupid statement. I have always understood it to be Harry. Misunderstanding for which I apologize but you had to cast racism accusations. A grubby response.
An accurate response. You clearly do not understand what ‘casual racism’ means.
Spotted this morning at the inaugural Magnetic Island Men’s Shed Mini Moke Muster: Les Walker working the shed, shaking hands all round. Is he on the hustings?
More likely the piss.
The event was a dry event, some may have BYO – just a lovely breakfast and alot of beautiful Mokes near the golf course in Picnic Bay. https://www.magneticcommunitynews.com/post/international-moke-day-on-magnetic-island
Had many a pootle around the island in a Moke back in the day. Are they still a bit pricey to rent?
They also had one of the top 10 bumper stickers of all time … ‘Moking is not a wealth hazard’.
Malcolm,
there are no Mokes on the island for hire anymore – they are all privately owned, by a dedicated bunch of motoring enthusiasts. Today 28th Sept is International Moke Day and the event is celebrated across the globe.
These days a good Moke can fetch upto about $35k – times have changed. They have become a ‘Wealth Hazard’.
Pie
You haven’t been able to rent a Moke on the island since 2010.
It’s been way too long. Why don’t you visit us more often?
Been there plenty of other times, but admittedly not for a year or two now.
Pie, the reason Mokes ceased as rentals many years ago they ruled about as suitable rental vehicles by Qld Transport over safety concerns. Probably about the time when ‘Roll Over Protection Systems’. ROPS came into play.
Yes, I recall almost losing my girl friend at the time back in early 80’s as we raced around the hill in a hire moke on the way to catch one of the last departing ferries.
Not even sure if we had a safety belts on at the time but I remember grabbing her arm to prevent her making an unplanned exit from the passenger seat on a corner!
Was nothing to do with the afternoon previous activities involving alcohol of course !
Is it possible she was trying to get away from you?
Bonjour All!
Let’s wait until the candidates for Mayor have nominated via the ECQ and then ‘go to town’ if you want to say something. Even though I’m not known for ‘common sense’, this seems like a sensible way forward.
Let’s not wait. Robust musings in the Nest is fun. Gives us a bit of thinking to do and passes away the time.
It’s going to be fun watching Thompson run for mayor again. Unlike last time, this time he will get his ass kicked so savagely he won’t be able to sit for a month. Bring it on. This will be entertainment plus.
Why doesn’t one of the muppets on Magnet Island apply for the Mayoral position? Islanders are always whinging and moaning about Council not looking after the island so now is a great opportunity for one of the retired old whinging island fossils to apply.
Perhaps because we are wise old muppets?
Johnny, Don’t tempt Sherrit
Spot on about Leighton Smith. His latest piece on the sale of the so-called Bluewater Airport was a masterclass in cut and paste journalism. Zero fact checks. Embarrassing for all involved.
Got it covered .. was going to mention the back ground but had to bump it for time. Will post something in comments soon.
Lighton, aka Jimmy Olsen, is a lightweight. Copying and pasting articles into a Courier Mail liftout. Wow! What a career. Stuck up here in Brownsville because nobody else will have him.
I would say Steve Motti should run for mayor though his inner circle told me he has been given a position of director at port authority.
Being close friends with Renee obviously helps.
Mr Motti doesn’t need favours from anyone to be eligible on any board as director. He would be a valuable asset to any business.
You’re right, India is flourishing under his leadership. OK! I’ll let myself out,,,bye!!!
Magpie, there’s a curious bamboozlement going on in the information war over the CCC and the mayoral by-election:
ABC News 26/9/25
“[Minister] Leahy said she was not allowed to release the CCC allegations against Mr Thompson in the show-cause notice.
“Clearly the people would want to know that information before they go to the polls and it is my view that they deserve that information,” she said.
“The CCC has specifically restricted me from releasing that information … the avenue for releasing that information sits with the CCC.”
She stressed the CCC investigation was ongoing.
Mr Thompson had also been provided with a copy of the CCC allegation and could release it if he wanted, Ms Leahy said.”
[Last week’s Magpie’s Nest commenter] Stephen Phillips September 27, 2025 at 9:59 am
“Twonames has come out and stated he is not in possession of the information, he refused it, he only has the letter, not the files and that is why he exited the show cause process to avoid being caught up in a carefully laid trap by the minister, and didn’t she look salty at the presso yesterday, she has taken a hit, and may be in trouble on this one . . . . ”
Magpie’s Nest main article 28/9/25
“No matter what he says, TwoNames Thompson was clearly spooked by the CCC information passed on to him by Minister Leahy, so after a day or two of pouty sulks, he gave up his mayoral position . . .”.
Not sure how “Stephen Phillips” knows whether or not Troy Thompson has read a document he is said to have been “provided” with by the minister but it does raise a question; does the CCC investigation and findings, whether ‘preliminary’ or ‘final’, whether ‘public’ or not, have any legal weight in the context of a by-election? Sure, we are all curious about what might be in there but is the CCC obliged to release its findings or are they now legally null and void?
The CCC has proved to be a dangerous and opaque organisation, which though nit’s high-handed lack of transparency is open to suspicions of political corruption through this desultory ‘investigation’. But whatever their findings, they would never be null and void. As to whether they would have any legal weight affecting the by-election, that is wholly dependent on the CCC’s Kim Il Plong releasing them. One would surely understand through simple logic (oh, stoppit, what am I sayin’?) that if the minister felt there was ample evidence to issue a show cause notice, then that same evidence should go a long way towards disqualifying Numbnuts Thompson from running.
Even if the information is of insufficient evidence for disqualification, it certainly is of enough moral weight to be released.
If Thompson doesn’t acknowledge receiving them, and won’t publish them, and if the CCC decides to never release the findings of its investigation, then for all intents and purposes the contents are null and void. However, we have a result; the mayor has resigned. The ballot paper will be a clean slate.
So the nutless Twonames has refused to release the CCC report. The spineless grub is happy to publish war and peace on social media every day, including a myriad of other documents, but he won’t publish the CCC’s findings, even though he claims to be honest, transparent, and innocent. What a wanker. Just another example of what a shifty grifter he is. Bring on the by-election so we can see the other candidates campaign against Twonames lack of transparency, publicly.
So what if (big if) TwoNames wins, then what.
We’ll sift through the debris of a once proud city.
Do you personally know anyone who would vote for him?
Yes, Ducky, I do. The person is a professional. After finding out he was a troylogite, I asked him how on earth could he support such a vile charlatan. It was only then I discovered he was a cooker. No longer on my Christmas card list v
Ducky, There are about 1000 cookers who signed his petitions. Talk about delusions of grandeur.
There are 1200 members of MyPlace Townsville. That’s the rusted on, irrecoverable cookers (ask Guy).
There are ~112,000 people on the roll.
So just over 1% are verifiable cookers. That 1% spend a lot of time on social media making noise, they certainly aren’t the silent majority.
Are you fucking ducks nuts ?
There’s literally a handful of people in “MySpace”
If there were 1200 people the council would be run by them.
Guy, there are literally 1200 members of the MyPlace Townsville Facebook group.
Then they reapply the show cause notice. The findings have not changed.
If they reapplied it, and he was voted in by the people, does that not go against the term, in the public interest. My concern is the more that run, the more likely his core group will stick to him, preferences aside. And what if he gets to the end of the show cause and does it again, there is nothing in the act that stops him resigning again, makes a mockery of the act, the ECQ and the minister. This is never going to end is it FFS. Should have terminated him, he already had a show cause last October.
He won’t resign again, because firstly he won’t be re-elected.
The show cause wasn’t brought about because he wasn’t innocent. They have something serious against him that is likely a disqualifying offence. I am also confident the CCC will finish the report before the election and finish his chances anyway.
Early poling shows he only has about 10% votes.
A lot of people won’t get caught voting for him the second time around, and he hasn’t won any friends or votes any other way.
Where’s this early polling?
The media are certainly upping the ante on Thompson, and yet he still fights. It is a shame his ticker is obviously larger than the rest, but his brains are mush from all those concussions. Now he has picked on the Premier, and reported them, is it any wonder they moved so quickly, though I do think there may be some interference, I’m not sure it will go far, it will be shut down internally. As for Mr Dametto, he now claims he is not party aligned, what a load of hog shit, he is Katter through and through, he knows if he is not an independent people will not pick him, I won’t vote for another political figure to enter our cities administration, it is not what the people want, so who’s next up?
So SP, last weekend you claimed, here in the ‘Nest, that Troy Thompson ” . . . has come out and stated he is not in possession of the information, he refused it, he only has the letter, not the files . . . “. Where and when and in what context did the ex-mayor “come out”?
This was put up 3 hours ago from Thompsons page: The report is not allowed to be released, it would be unlawful to do so. I did not accept service of any documents that had been gained unlawfully by the minister or the government, we refuse to be drawn into the political bias and trap layed out by the local government minister and her team. We received a letter, with the same allegations from the start, but nothing has changed, as I have said, it is against the law to release any information of an ongoing investigation, and we will not be trapped by media, or politicians looking for an extra popularity bump. Allegations are that, nothing more. There has been zero convictions, and if the CCC came forward , then it would go to court, instead the minister used her department as a carrier service. The answer is simple, they found allegations, but it is no different to anything else, we need to remember, my predecessor was allegedly charged, and not stood down, and minimal focus, this is a witch hunt.
Thoughts and prayers, petal, thoughts and prayers.
What codswallop.
Boohoo fuckwit. You won’t release the report because you know that it nails you to the cross. Like everything else in your life, it’s all smoke and mirrors and deceit. You are a crooked cretin Troy
What we need, but will never get, is someone like Fran (R.I.P). Someone who is the following;
– Respected
– Does not have political bias
– Has business acumen/experience/skill
– Is financially literate
– Connects to the people/is respected
– Has a PROVEN track record
Someone like a Phil Batty comes to mind, however he is out of the equation. My list above is something that dreams are made of. However, if such a person exists, and is reading this blog, please pay your entrance fee and start campaigning. You will have our support.
Anyone who believes Dametto is no longer a mad Katter is deluded. Ben Fusco has made this abundantly clear:
NOTE:
“This is a moment of growth. KAP is expanding its influence into all three levels of government: federal, state, and now local. Our fight in state parliament remains strong and uninterrupted, but with this strategic move, we are ensuring that the people of North Queensland have powerful representation at every level.”
“This move is about expansion. KAP acknowledges the independence of local government, and we support Nick’s commitment to serve Townsville with integrity and autonomy. But make no mistake this is a step forward for our cause. Our strength now spans federal, state, and local government, allowing us to deliver on the big goals for North Queensland”
https://kattersaustralianparty.org.au/media-release/kap-extends-its-reach-nick-dametto-to-contest-townsville-mayoralty/?
Bit confusing, Fusco puts this out on Katter Party stationery and Damento on the TV last night stating he is no longer a member of the Katter Party.
The Magpie’s first impression is that Fusco isn’t too bright. And not everyone is on the same page concerning the glaringly obvious deal that has been done.
SAY WHAT?
You fuckin’ reckon???
You come anywhere near me with the tin snips, you limp-wristed nancy boy, and I’ll bite your fuckin’ dick off. Not that it’s much use to you, you bottom-of-the-bed croucher.
What a disaster this will be. House prices will rise (good for pollies) and the poor and most venerable will be further in debt to have a roof over their head. Rental accommodation will rise and the housing crisis we have now will seem like a fairytale. We still haven’t built enough homes for our needs yet, so prices will have an extreme escalation
You only have to cast your mind back to the GFC and see what forced housing bubbles do to an economy, although this will be similar but different.
Glanced at the front page of today’s Astonisher.
Three Names refusing to take a bully test, what ever that is, while Nick D is happy to take the test. What is this all about and does it suggest Three Names will also refuse to undergo the training ordered by the TCC a week or so ago?

Priorities mate, priorities, FFS. Heh heh heh.
But since you ask, it is about this risible bit of egotistical misplaced flummery.
Iditor Jill Poulson reaches the high point of absurdity when she intones this bit of no-shit, Sherlock:
‘As the editor of this publication, I firmly believe it is not the Townsville Bulletin’s role to tell you who to vote for. But it is absolutely our role to tell you who the people you are voting for and if what they are telling you is the truth.”
Yes, Ms Poulson, it is called OBJECTIVE JOURNALISM, and always has been.
Good to see you catching up. Just a shame you didn’t have this attitude during the last council election, but back then, your lips were too glued to Jenny’s gluteus maximus.
This is advertising
The bulletin is telling shills and gremlins that for a small fee they will swing the election.
Sigh,

Heady stuff, eh?
Special Meeting of Council today at 3PM (29/9/2025)
• The CEO is asking Council to apply to the Minister (Hon Ann Leahy) for the mayoral by-election to be run as a full postal vote, citing convenience (“voter fatigue” after the state poll), accessibility, and a cost saving of $233,284.98 versus attendance polling.
• The accompanying brief sets the legal basis and timelines: Troy’s resignation (letters dated 26 Sep 2025) created a vacancy; under LGA s163/164 the office must be filled within 2 months and, in the middle of the term, must be by-election. It lays out the postal-approval process under LGEA ss45AA–45AB–45, and confirms optional-preferential voting for the mayor. It also provides ECQ’s indicative costs: Attendance $990,991.01 vs Postal $757,706.03 (2024 turnout was 79.21%).
Not live streamed as far as The ‘Pie can see.
Watching now.
Not live-streamed but the report to council is online in the meeting Agenda. The council has asked for a full postal ballot. The Commissioner will investigate and report to the minister. The rules say:
(2)
In deciding whether to approve the application [for a postal-only ballot], the Minister must have regard to
(a) the electoral commissioner’s recommendation and the reasons for the recommendation; and
(b) the matters mentioned in section 45AB(4).
(3)
The approval may be given for
(a) all the local government’s area; or
(b) 1 or more divisions of its area; or
(c) a part of its area marked on a map.
(4)
If the approval is given for a part of a local government’s area, the local government must—
(a) ensure that the public may inspect the relevant map . . . . .
Regardless of the method (postal or polling booth, as stated in section 65(2) of the LGEA, the system of voting at an election of a mayor of a local government is optional preferential voting.
Every man and his dog will have a view about the impact of a postal-only vote as we have never had one here before.
It hasn’t been approved yet. And it shouldn’t be, the election nis too vital. And what evidence does McCabe have of voter fatigue … is he not willing to acknowledge this is a unique by-election, and everyone is fired up about. The ‘Pie has had lots of contacts about this and NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON, in supermarkets, Castletown, the golf course, the chemists and the pub – not one has said they don’t care and have no opinion . … Funny how a council – staff and elected – are willing to blow $800k on the Wedgewood frippery, and give away millions to concert promoters, but find an extra $230k for a full election not worth the democratic extra.
So what is the process in a postal-only election? Is a ballot paper, explanatory notes and a return mail envelope sent to each voter at their ECQ-registered home address? That would mean 100,000+ ballot papers floating around like junk mail. Now there’s an opportunity!
A postal-only election is definitely wrong, and it is a bullshit argument by McCabe or whoever thought it up about voter fatigue. If ever there was a time that voters would be champing at the bit to flex their electoral muscles, this would be it, second only to the amalgamation vote that saw Les Tyrell take over merged twin cities forced on us by Beattie.
Pie
You have a long memory of local politics. I’m wondering if you could place the Dametto deal in some sort of context for us? I can see from his CV that Dametto grew up on a cane farm in Ingham. Are he and David Crisafulli such old buddies that DC has been able to call on him in what is now an emergency ? And if they are great mates, why was it necessary for Dametto to hook up with the Katter Krazies to get a leg up in politics? Why didn’t the LNP endorse him?
Any deal has nothing to with the past, beyond participants having known each other … probably friends for a long time. The Magpie has little doubt the Dametto candidacy is a Brisbane-hatched deal, that doesn’t factor in any best interests of Townsville. That is not say Dametto would be a dud mayor. But then, we’ve st the bar so low in the past decade or so, not being a dud mayb simply mean not being found out.
Another inquiry at the Townsville University Hospital. Many male contributors here should be concerned and asking what’s going on as this inquiry is into the urology unit which can become increasingly relevant to senior blokes.
I’d like to know how this hospital maintains accreditation with the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.

I’ve had numerous dealings with the department due to ongoing pee pee issues. Always found them to be professional and good at what they do. Every male should try having a tube shoved up their old fella at least once in their life, it’s exciting stuff!
All good then, they wouldn’t want you to be pissed off.

Documents are up, looks like it’ll cost ratepayers $757,706 for postal votes which council are indicating, and to be done within 2 months.

Postal saves only $230,000. What price proper free and fair elections?
You sound like Trump. Postal votes are fine.
The Magpie really does wish some of you cunts could read English. There’s nothing wrong with postal votes, they are absolutely necessary in all elections, but in this instance … as I’ve said, Cloth-Ears – this election should use every method and access to ensue a fair and equitable result.
And we take it your comparing The ‘Pie to Trump is flattery, given you’re known obvious commenting allegiances.
You get defensive but then imply that other methods are needed for a fair and equitable result. No other method is needed.
And you have no idea what my commenting allegiances are so stop trying to appear like you have any idea.
The ‘Pie can read, gobbler, including between the lines. Which you clearly can’t … it is self-explanatory if you just for a moment take off your helmet and stop playing with your crayons.
Defensive? How?
The ‘Pie is unavoidably away from the screen for a while but will attend to all comments on return.
Playing a sly game of two-up out the back of a selected vomitorium sir?
Mr Thompson has been outsmarted (no surprise) by his former Councillors and the state government. Having a postal only election greatly reduces Mr Thompson’s exposure to the public. Once again, he has been outplayed. Seems to be story of his life, getting outsmarted by everybody else. It is going to be a pleasure watching the stain lose the election. Not even his superhero Batman Watts and a handful of tinfoilers can get Troy elected. Troy will soon find out that, like Jenny Hill, Townsville has fucking had enough.
While The ‘Pie kinda agrees with the sentiment, how does a postal only vote reduce his exposure to the public?
Mail-order bribe?
Only a few days to go until Labor’s next disaster commences; 5% first home buyer home loans. Since the announcement, many homes have already gone up $50k, which increases the size of the first home buyers mortgage, mostly due to established investors raping the market in advance of 1 October. Massive debts for first home buyers with a hot market showing no signs of slowing yet. Are we in a bubble or are these prices the new new. Time will tell. But if this is a bubble, there is going to be a lot of pain when it bursts.

Today the Bulletin reports Acting Mayor Greaney has not yet decided if she will run for Mayor. That’s not what they said only a few days ago, where she was a definite starter.
Has she at last read the room in her own electorate?
Or is she strategically capitulating so as not to disadvantage Nick by splitting the vote?
Maybe we should really worry if Harry Patel withdraws? He’s the official vote splitter.
Greaney has a strong LNP background, despite her years of brown-nosing the Mullet. There’s every chance she’ll be tapped on the shoulder and whispered a few vague promises if she just picks her lazy deputy mayor’s income.
Not sure where you get that idea Magpie. She and her family have a strong Labor background
Greaney will take what she can get from wherever she can get it. An opportunistic, untalented climber.
Foodtrucks is an egotistical cow. She will definitely run for mayor, confident in her own abilities. She loves the attention and genuinely believes that she is the best candidate. Perhaps if she wins, and with the additional salary, she will buy some more marquee tents to wear around Walker street?
Hi Pie,
On the issue of Bulletin’s readership. We have an online subscription but this was purchased to read the NT News, and Courier Mail, when we moved to Townsville we selected the Bulli. We can read papers from all over Australia with the subscription paid to News Ltd. The readership quoted by the Bulli, Is this the national online membership? High for the Bulletin but very low if national. Maybe they monitor ‘hits’ in which case it could be repeated clicks inflating numbers.
Well, something’s being fiddled somewhere Ian, those are simply absurd numbers for the Bulletin to claim for themselves.
But colour me not at all surprised.
What? Facts/figures from Wikipedia aren’t accurate? Lol
These figures aren’t quoted by the Bulli, it’s Wikipedia and likely not updated for some years. Notice the cover price still says $1.70 for a Saturday?
The point is it’s up there when someone (an advertiser?) googles the Bulletin. And if they leave it unchecked, then they approve of this nonsense. Including the way out-of-date pricing. But the paper has been aware of this listing in very recent times, naming Poulson’s predecessor Cas Garvey as editor, and giving the Walker Street address.
So now the council has voted for a mail-in, there is a very troubling question if the government agrees with it … DO YOU HAVE APPLY TO DO A MAIL-IN VOTE? And then get sent the forms, fill them out and send them back? So much for goofy suggestions of ease of voting. And an open invite for a genuinely low turn-out.
The only other alternative is that mail in voting forms will be sent out to all households, based on lists that will have no doubt changed, the churn would have been continuous. This is an open invitation for criminal conduct, particularly considering the person and his supporters who started all this: they have demonstrated criminal tendencies from the outset.
Let me ask you this: do you trust the council, the ECQ and the post office to get this right?
I certainly bloody don’t.
According to the ECQ website a voter can request a postal ballot paper either online or by a phone call. The ballot will be mailed out. Theoretically this should be ‘easier’ for fatigued voters and not disadvantage enthusiastic voters. It will be different though. Change is almost as confronting as compulsory voting itself so it will be fascinating to see how it plays out.
It takes the PO 2 weeks to mail something across town, and sometimes they drop it in the wrong mailbox. Then it will take 2 weeks to get it back. Hope they have long lead times. For a measly 200K I would rather front up or do an absentee vote.
As someone who regularly works on a polling booth at election time, I have no issue trusting the ECQ.
Australia Post however is another matter.
But the last few elections have highlighted bigger issues.
The number of now homeless and transient people who still wish to participate in the election process but have no fixed address. As someone running a booth they were allowed to vote based on their enrolled address. But now they likely won’t receive ballot papers.
And what about those who would arrive to vote but were not on the roll the booth was provided due to some error, and yet we provide them with an opportunity to vote. Now they won’t even receive a ballot.
These two categories may not account for huge numbers of people, but they may be enough to change an election outcome and should certainly be afforded the opportunity to vote.
Deliberately disenfranchising a single person should never be tolerated in a fair dinkum democracy. Especially when voting is compulsory, and failure to do so can result in a hefty fine.
Exactly.
While postal voting in itself is not a bad thing as it enables voters unable to attend the polling booth an opportunity to vote. Making the entire election a postal vote is complete and utter bullshit and an exercise in excluding a segment of voters, either deliberately or simply through incompetence.
Isn’t the election of the mayor up to rate payers and residents of Townsville? If a person is transient or homeless wouldn’t that open the process to fraud?
You’ve answered your own question by using the word ‘resident’, which does not necessarily mean you have a home. People in hostels for the less fortunate still have the right to vote. Transients don’t of course and are unlikely to be interested anyway.
Cockie, excluding someone from their democratic right because they are homeless is a bit Trumpian. Perhaps think this through a little more.
DEFINITELY NOT MAGPIE.
And since when has the council been worried about saving money.
They lost approx $650,000 on the Wedgewood exhibition and brushed it off.
It’s probably the state government pulling the strings again. The decision to have a postal vote might ultimately advantage candidates backed by the major political parties. They have the ability and money to organise their campaign quickly.
The winner will be decided by the voters who don’t care, and that’s why constituents are about to be swamped with how to vote cards.
But can you or anyone else tell Nesters what the exact process is for a ‘mail-in only’ vote? Perhaps The ‘Pie is wrong in his understanding of the way this single method polling is conducted.
I’m currently O/S, so how can I acquire the ballot papers? and from where I am the probability of the docs returning (if I had ‘em) is probably 20%, Typhoons permitting.
If, and that’s a big if, I can acquire these docs at the Oz Embassy here, a 3 day cross country or a costly air flight!
Its clear that this option will earn me a please explain notice, which ironically will be sent to my home address back in Oz.
These chair bound dreamers are incapable of seeing the big picture.
R d R.. How would you vote if it were a ‘Polling booth election’ assuming you will be overseas.
Exactly. The ‘Pie leaving him to work that out.
CW,
Some of the larger Australian embassies have had in person paper voting for Federal elections, London comes to mind if my memory is correct? Doubt this would be available for a mayoral byelection for a regional city.
R de-R, I was similarly caught last year for the state election. I was booked to fly out on the Sunday, the day before pre-polling was starting, my wife was already overseas and postal votes weren’t scheduled for at least a couple of weeks.
Contacting the ECQ (QEC?), they advised there were no facilities to vote at the Oz Embassy, so we would simply be marked as overseas at time of election. This can easily be verified through Immigration. Ring, or email them.
They also said if I was really enthusiastic, they would provide me with two phone numbers. On polling day I would have to ring the first number to get a one time code number. Once getting that, I would ring the second number to place my vote. What could possibly go wrong?
I settled for the first option.
I trust the ECQ, they always do a great job. This Trumpian electoral scaremongering is really unbecoming.
That is just so pathetic, so lame.
You really are a dunderhead, OED, this is isn’t about the ECQ, it is about the most transparent manner in which to hold this by-election. No one is talking about the undoubted integrity of the ECQ, what we are talking about is the method GETTING THE VOTES TO the ECQ. And therein lie a few problems that need to be clarified.
Your double bluff … conjuring up images of Trumpian election conspiracy images here in Queensland to lead readers away from the real problems with a mail-in votes, does not add to this debate.
Stay out of it if this is the level of your yelpings.
According to Wikipedia, the turnout for the 2024 Townsville council election was 74.27%, up by 4.94% on the previous. That’s a pretty low bar considering that there’s a $150+ fine for not voting and that 35,000 Queenslanders were issued with that threat. Of course, when you have a nearby polling booth to compulsorily attend it is a different experience from phoning or going online to apply for a ballot paper and then completing that administrative process. Both methods require a moment of planning and action – probably a bigger ‘moment’ than the actual vote itself. I can’t imagine that APPLYING for a postal ballot will be compulsory, let alone punishable, so the eventual turnout might be very low indeed – as I think the Magpie is pointing out.
Mick Damento has resigned as membler for Hinchinbrook which necessitates a by-election. Wouldn’t it make more sense for the State Government/QEC to hold both elections on the same day using the electoral process of the past.
Requiring voters north of the Bohle River up to roughly Crystal Creek having to Postal vote for council and then either postal or booth vote for a new member for Hinchinbrook will just cause confusion
It will be interesting to see how many votes are counted. The donkey voters just won’t return it.
The classic ‘the mailman ate my homework’ ploy.
There’s nothing a donkey voter likes more than drawing small piles of poo on all the little boxes, or angrily scrawling “Your all fukd” and drawing a cock and balls for emphasis, and then popping that ballot in the ballot box, ensuring someone gets to admire their handiwork. So be assured, they’ll submit their artwork.
There’s more than one reason they’re called donkeys.
They wouldn’t know who voted and who didn’t. If they only get 30% of votes returned, is that enough to be considered democratic?
Once again, Townsville Hospital faces another debacle. How long will those in charge remain in their positions if they cannot effectively manage the hospital? Will a Liberal state government finally take action and remove an incompetent board, sending a clear message to the public sector that failure can no longer be hidden behind bureaucratic processes or covered up by scapegoating others?
Interesting question, and cf the calls for the Optus boss to carry the can and quit. The principle should be the same but the reality if very different. The Optus boss is held to account by the shareholders, stock market and business ethics, the TUH is a government run enterprise that is run on the grace and favour of convenient politics.
The hospitals board is stacked with those who fit the jobs for the boys and girls criteria. Of course Mooney is the chair and he is as useless as a submarine with screen doors. The whole process of appointing board members is flawed and based on mates rates rather than a genuine candidate criteria. The system needs to be changed.
Yep, such appointments at all level of government are crass favour fulfilling, often for old hacks. Works both sides of theChambers, too, so no point in throwing around Labor or LNP slurs. But here’s a thing … Mooney and Criafulli are friendly, and appear to have mutual respect.
Stack em, to quote the Hospital board:
“The Townsville Hospital and Health Board comprises eight independent members who draw upon their individual skills and experience to set the strategic direction of the health service and deliver on key priorities for our communities.”
Granted, Mooney is an obvious political appointee although you’d have to admit he has a pretty distinguished local pedigree. The other seven members, if you bother to actually recognise who they are (and you haven’t demonstrated that you know anything about any of them) would probably pass any pub test, if there was such a thing. Look ‘em up. You might learn something.
All Hospital and Health Service Board positions were advertised when this media release was released. Hopefully the appointments will be made soon
https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/103194
Isn’t it the CEO’s role to manage the day-to-day operations of the Hospital and Health Service upon the advice he is receiving from his executive management team. The blame for the renal unit disaster should lie with this team who failed in monitoring all processes within their area of responsibility and reporting and rectifying deficiencies immediately. However the ultimate responsibility lies with the CEO like it does in all business entities whether it is a public or private entity.
Tony Mooney has publicly said that the CEO Kieran Keyes is on annual leave but there are questions circulating about if he’ll return to work.
Critical, the statement you linked makes this observation:
“Last month, the Crisafulli Government passed the Health Legislation Amendment Bill 2025, which requires all boards to include at least one frontline registered health practitioner currently working for the local Hospital and Health Service.”
If you look at the makeup of the current TUH board there are three members who are frontline registered health practitioners currently working for the local Hospital and Health Service or similar – one is a GP working at TAIHS which is no bad thing. Another is a Health educator who used to work at TUH Palliative Care. That’s half the board who are frontline experienced. Then there are accountants, lawyers and other professional administrators. It looks like a good cross section rather than “mates rates” or ‘jobs for the boys and girls’. But of course opinions are opinions.
Its a friends and family set up
Across the country we are seeing the signs of late empire collapse , a collapse wholly of the federal government’s design.
The 5 % deposit to buy a house because prices have been pumped up by unsustainable immigration ( Howard started this heroin hit to a dying economy around the time of GST. GST / VAT is introduced to fuel immigration – someone needs to pay for it).
Whilst im on that, GST / VAT also kills manufacturing, when Australia and Britain introduced their respective taxes manufacturing nose dived. No economy can survive rampant taxation born of stupid policies and ideology.
At a governance level, the hospital board is ultimately accountable for whether patients, including urology patients, receive safe, timely, and appropriate aftercare.
Board’s Role
The board doesn’t manage individual cases, but it sets the strategic direction, approves resourcing, and oversees performance of the hospital and its executive team.
They are responsible for ensuring systems are in place so that aftercare pathways (follow-up clinics, post-surgical support, discharge planning, GP coordination) actually work.
If there are persistent failures (e.g. repeated reports of patients discharged without aftercare), the board is responsible for holding the CEO and senior executives to account.
Management’s Role (CEO, executives, clinical directors)
They are responsible for day-to-day operations and ensuring policies and staffing models deliver that aftercare.
Failures in execution should be escalated and reported to the board.
Accountability
If aftercare gaps persist, boards can be investigated by Queensland Health and the Health Minister.
In extreme cases, a state government can dismiss or replace a hospital board for systemic failings — it has happened before in Queensland.
So: while the board won’t be directly blamed for one patient not getting follow-up, they are accountable if it becomes a systemic issue that reflects poor governance, oversight, or failure to act on known risks.
Well, regardless of what experts are in the Townsville hospital board, they are failing miserably. There are a number of issues at the hospital, some very deep and complex, and the issues aren’t getting fixed. That’s a failure.
So while I see both sides of the argument that has been presented in the Nest, there are some systemic issues that the board is failing to correct. The state government needs to step up and address these issues because the board and the CEO certainly aren’t.
100% this causes an erosion of public trust. The lack of professionalism in the workforce starts at the top.
Here’s another problem with the total postal vote:
At the last Queensland election I applied for a postal vote, which I received 2 days AFTER polling day.
Then they had the cheek to threaten me with a fine for not voting.
What could possibly go wrong this time.
The other problem with postal votes is you have no idea who’s actually voting
What? Who is ‘you’, the ECQ or the populace?
The ‘Pie believe this by-election is going to be a trying time for you, Guy.
Did somebody call me??
Guy, I’m not sure you understand how the voting process works here in Australia. But we have a secret ballot. We currently dont know who is voting, other than they’ve crossed a name off a list and proven their identity. Once they are handed a ballot, the ECQ and AEC have no more oversight until the ballot boxes are counted. They dont police who fills out the forms and what they put on them, so stop being ridiculous.
Ducks Nuts, you are a clown. I know how the system works thank you very much. I look forward to receiving your vote, and many other votes actually. It’s time to drain the swamp, make Townsville great again.
Funny, that phrase ‘drain the swamp’ is familiar. Hmmm, someone else said that. Wonder how that’s going for him.
What measures are there to prevent the receiver of their ballot papers “selling” the access to the papers to someone else?
Then returning the papers in the envelope provided, as if the entries are the input of the rightful owner.
QED for any unscrupulous, dodgy pollie!
In the samvein that Bob Katter believes there are no poofters in north Queensland, The Magpie believes there is no such thing as unscrupulous dodgy politicians in Queensland.
Hang on, Dan Gleeson said that first then Bob did some community research to test Dan’s theory and confirmed that it was indeed correct. Mind you Dan’s statement was that there was no pooftahs in Thuringowa only. What’s not to believe?
Hmm, little does Bob know. My type are everywhere, including the little redneck towns. Watch out Bob, we are cumming to get you!
G, and everybody else,
Have you written to your local member using polite forcefull words of one syllable? Writing to the Pie is a fine thing to do but it will only get you so far. Good luck, and yes I have written to my local member, so good luck to me too. We will both need it.
Wrote to them about what??
Pie
I’ve been following the comments and would go so far as to suggest that what is happening to Townsville is a bloodless coup. The state government wants Nick Dametto quietly installed. They don’t want news footage of riled up residents at the polling booths. I agree the only person who appears to believe in “voter fatigue” is CEO Joe McCabe.
I understand that our Councillors must have been under a lot of pressure at that meeting on Monday to GET THE JOB DONE. But they’ve done their constituents no favours at all by agreeing to exclusive postal voting.
If and when Dametto wins, he’ll enter office with a stench.
Clara,
At Mondays meeting Crs. Jacobs and Dirou voted against the upcoming mayoral election being Postal Vote only, so it was not unanimous.
Frankly is it bullshit that the rest of of councillors and McCabe are talking about saving money, after all the monies wasted on the ‘Wedgie’, and lets not forget funding the invasion day event along with various other self interest groups events they have approved.
It was the councillors who declared they couldn’t work with Thompson, hence the no confidence vote.
The people of Townsville have the right to vote for a new mayor this should be at the polling booth.
It is time for councillors to shut up for once, let everyone vote, not jepardize the democratic process, with a dodgey postal service.
Agreed. It’s scandalous. Another cave-in to MCCabe by the Councillors we trusted to represent our interests. Kudos to the two Councillors who stuck their necks out on this one.
We expect Greaney to lick McCabe’s boots, but for the usually alert Robbo and Suzy,: have they thought this through.? TRUST. A rapidly diminishing concept.
And yes, WedgieGate : all that dosh for an event no one in Townsville was even remotely interested in. For a quarter of the cost: a day of civic celebration for the whole City. I can’t speak for the mainland, but on the island, polling day is a hoot. A social day, catching up with neighbours. I already despair that the cost of living has impacted on the viability of the traditional school cake stall and sausage sizzle on polling day.
Oh, and no one has mentioned that removing the polling booths also removes the scrutineers trying to keep the bastards honest.
Clarabelle, can you point to an election this century where there was a cake stall or bbq at any Maggie Island polling booth?
You’re pathetic, Charlie. We’re having a serious discussion about the erosion of our democratic rights. All you can contribute is one of those “I’ve lived on the island longer than you” barbs.
Charlie,
Not sure where you vote on the island?
The Nelly Bay State School always has a democracy sausage sizzle, soft drinks and a raffle or two run the P&C. Sometimes there’s even cakes, plants and herbs for sale, it is quite a social morning.
The ECQ also offers employment to locals at the 2 pooling stations on the island, the only voter fatigue seems to be with our lazy councillors and our questionable CEO.
Let the election for our new mayor by held at the pooling booths.
Good idea, let’s all be in the swim of things.
I made the time to watch the video of that meeting. Two observations: Suzy appeared unusually confused and impatient; and among a number of the male councillors there is a seething undercurrent of anger, resentment and personal distaste specifically directed at Troy Thompson. Perhaps this affected their judgement in determining what we, the people, might want.
So good of you to make time out of jam-packed day, Cow Bell, a true community champion. But might be an idea to get a new screen, absolutely none of what you say managed to make into the Nest’s monitor. Can’t recall Thompson being hardly mentioned, if at all. Certainly not in any noteworthy way.
When you are coming into the Nest, good idea to check your hidden agendas at the door. Especially when you won’t tell us why you’ve so clearly got it for McCabe.
You seem to be the one who has convinced yourself I am obsessed with Joe McCabe. He wasn’t even mentioned in my comment on the Special Meeting, so why do you keep bringing him up?
Because you do. Stop being dishonest.
Pie, how do I get to see what Two Names is posting on Facebook, I type in Troy Thompson Facebook and get so many Troy Thompson with no results, hopefully one of the Nesters can help out. Take care.
Ralph- the Townsvillians Blocked by Troy Thompson page provides a pretty good summary of the TT page along with some excellent commentary
If the councillors and the council itself are concerned with saving money they should just leave TwoNames on suspension on full pay for 2 years and 5 months until march 28. The cost would be around $604k saving the public over $150k if postal election and $360k against a polling booth election only of course if the acting mayor refuses to take the increase in salary whilst in the acting position.
What am I saying……strike that nonsense as if that would happen.
I see that our PM has been galavanting around the world again. Seriously, all we see is either himself or Benny Pong having meetings with world leaders and commenting about fucking Gaza or Ukraine. I’m over it. Albo you pathetic specimen, we have a cost-of-living crisis back home. Pensioners can’t afford food. Kids can’t afford a mortgage. Millions of others can’t afford their rent or electricity bills. Enough is enough – as a priority, concentrate on the needs of Australians in Australia. If you aren’t prepared to do that then fuck off and let somebody else do the job that you are failing miserably at.
Diplomacy paves the way for potentially lucrative trade and security deals and is critical for the domestic economy. If ever there was a time to strengthen international relations, it is now. Sure we only see the photo ops, handshakes, lavish events etc but there is plenty of strategy and work going on behind the scenes. He will also be visiting and working with consulate staff in various locations. Do you not understand that we operate in a world economy and not in a insular silo? Peacekeeping, foreign aid, trade and diplomatic visits are always all about securing stability and trade. How many world leaders have visited our shores in the past 5 years? He is literally doing his job.
I see Albanese’s diplomacy has landed Australia’s beef industry lucrative deals with China as they drop the USA like a handful of dog shit. And the careful diplomacy has meant Australian canola producers have picked up huge shipments to China when Canada caused some minor offence (after Canada picked up surplus supply when China dropped the USA)
The ‘Pie wouldn’t be buying shares in those industries on that basis … second only to Trump is the Chinese government’s touchy capriciousness in trade matters. Remember wine?
All sanity is on such a knife edge that this could change in a nano second if Melania got ambushed in her private quarters and Trump woke up in a good mood. The reason for the good mood also probably took just a nano second.
Another beneficiary of the orange Ejit is Argentina. Not only have they scored a big increase in their beef trade with China, the US government is about to hand them a $20B “loan” because he loves the right wing nutcase that is running the country.
And the US lost all their soybean trade to ArArgentina. Must feel good to win so much.
Just in case you haven’t been incapacitated by ‘councillor’ fatigue, here’s today’s TCC meeting agenda.

All done and dusted in 29 minutes, medics on stand-by reported only minor fractured comments and very little brain bruising to anybody. But item one – Illich Park will get a closer look from The Magpie.
Fun fact from every Council meeting I’ve attended with Joe McCabe in the CEO role. He never has any correspondence to bring to the Chamber.
Christ, Cow Bell, your inexplicable personal vendetta against McCabe has allowed you to become ridiculous. How on earth could you know what’s in the sheaf of papers in front of him, and anyway, to your jaundiced eye, what has he failed to share with us?
What happens when a councillor runs for mayor and wins? Is there another expensive by-election?
Will Food Trucks run for Mayor?
If she decides to run and is successful, does this result in another expensive by-election for her division – an outcome that seems to be at odds with her comments about the added cost to ratepayers caused by by the suspended mayor.
Good question about the process. Anyone?
An easy AI search produced this information.
https://www.localgovernment.qld.gov.au/for-councils/governance/local-government-elections/councillors-and-council-employees-contesting-elections#:~:text=If%20you%20run%20as%20a,from%20your%20previous%20councillor%20role.
Yes Critical, looks like a councillor vacancy would need to be filled by another by-election:
“Councillor vacancies in the middle period of the term (a middle period starts on the day of the first anniversary of the last quadrennial elections and ends on the day before the third anniversary of the last quadrennial election); by holding a by-election.”
Is it the same process that got Fran (Vale) her position on Council, ie second across the line? However, if they were unopposed in the regular election, there would be no second finisher.
Not sure, but think the way Fran made it to council has now been changed. But as said, not sure.
Magpie and Kenny, the answer is in my comment posted just before. If the vacancy occurs in the “middle period of the term”, a by-election must be held.
Yes. Was that in dispute?
They changed the process and made it retrospective, before Fran was given the opportunity. It was mainly due to Mr. Pineapple in Rocky who was the next man up after the Rocky Mayor stood down due to allegations of corruption. Frans case was sent to a bielection after Punch drunk moved into State politics, and Rocky also had a bielection for Mayor.
Ha ha I see the Maggie Island retirees are having debate in the magpies nest. Retirees with nothing better to do other than whinge about roads, public toilets, Greaney and council, overgrown trees, waste removal etc etc etc. Get a life you whinging old codgers and go do something productive for your community..
The Magpie agrees with your incisive observation that Nest readers should do something productive for their community.
Like expose the problems about our roads, public toilets, Greaney and council, overgrown trees, waste removal etc etc etc.
Touche
100% agree. Townsville has become a city of entitlement and expects governments at various levels to fully fund and do everything.
How about getting the callous off your dominant hands and do something worthwhile.
Dts,
I take it then you are not a retiree, therefore you are are either employed and corresponding with the Pie on your employer’s time (1.17pm), or you are unemployed, so, get a job. If on holidays you would be doing something recreational and thrilling, so we can scratch holidays.
HEY, MadMan, steady on.
What could be more recreational and/or thrilling than jousting on Nest comments.
Recreational and thrilling?
Burying the cat!
The bloody thing kept leaping about putting on a turn that was most unbecoming. A more uncooperative animal I have never met.
Later I will tell about burying a belovered pet goose in the wet season. The hole in the ground fills with water, geese, alive or deceased, float. I will leave it there dear Pie, but my children, now in their 40s still bring it up from time to time. (Poor pun)
This kid is just 4 year old. It just seems odd that no one, particularly in our modern sensationalised media, has mentioned the D word.
Twonames is campaigning strongly on his Faecesbook page. Advertising his campaign with daily posts. He is still also commenting about councillors, Crisafulli and other ministers. A complete wanker. He doesn’t realise that he is going to get caned in the by-election. Townsvillians are sick to death of his bullshit. Besides, he will be too busy to be Mayor, with all the litigation he is doing and complaints to various authorities.
Like the last floundering of a dying fish on the deck.
All of a sudden, the government and its intrumentalities can move quickly, when it suits them. Funny that.

This mob are bloody insane. Six weeks to the election day (I don’t get that one as we don’t have to front up to a booth), its just a date that we’re supposed to have posted our ballot sheets back by. There’s probably only three weeks until eligible voters can update their details such a address and to enrol if just turned 18
How are people on holidays overseas or even in Australia (the grey nomads, caravaners and others making their way around this great country for example) going to vote, how about homeless people including those people who are couch surfing.
Wonder what the criteria is going to be for ECQ to issue fines and to not fine people.
I thought some sanity was returning to council but not certain now. 25 March 2028 cannot come soon enough.
Do you know when nominations for Mayor can be accepted and the deadline?
Friends, expect a visit from Thompson. He has confirmed that he will be door knocking and there will be pamphlet drops. I personally hope that he dons the Batman outfit like his mate did. Cheap stunts and childish behaviour are this clowns forte.
It is with some alarm that I read here in the Comments that serial pest Troy Thompson is out and about door knocking. I have taken precautions to protect myself and family. I encourage all to do the same. It will send a wonderful message.

We can just imagine.
(knock knock)
Yeah?
Hi, I’m Barry Bimbrauer and I’m running for mayor on a platform of truth, honesty and transparency.
From the Bulletin and ABC News we have this latest information on the postal-only mayoral by-election:
1. The by-election will be held [in the period ending] on 15 November
2. So far there are four nominations – Dametto, Thompson, Patel and Greaney
3. “ECQ Commissioner Pat Vidgen said all enrolled Townsville voters would be mailed their ballots after candidate nominations closed.”
Any idea when noms close?
Apparently, the ECQ will formally publish the Notice of Election on Tuesday and open nominations for the position of Mayor. On that occasion they will announce the date for close of nominations.
Good info, thanks.
In case any Nester is about to have a rush of blood to the head, a candidate must do MANDATORY training before they can nominate:
From the ECQ website:
“All candidates are required to complete a free online training course with the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning (DSDILGP) within the 6- month period prior to nominating for a quadrennial election or by-election.
The mandatory training must be completed within 6 months prior to nominating for every election. If a candidate completed the training prior to the 2024 local government elections and decides to run again in a by-election, they will need to retake the training and receive a new reference number before nominating for the by-election.”
That last line makes it interesting.
If the nominations open Tuesday (next), how can there already be 4 nominations per your point #2 Bob? Have ThreeNames, Food Trucks, Dementia and Dirty Harry received a head start?
It’s a matter of declared intentions, not officially nominated.
And here’s a Magpie exclusive … Michael Kopittke will not be running. That’s what he told The Magpie directly two days ago when asked.
Based on past local election timelines in Queensland, nominations typically close around two to three weeks before the election date. Since the by-election is on November 15, you can expect nominations to likely close in late October. That’s a general estimate based on usual practice. ECQ is due to issue formal papers next week which will set out timelines precisely. Given it’s Friday afternoon already, I wouldn’t expect that to magically happen today. Most likely nominations will close w/b 27/10.
Let’s hope we get some credible nominations, as right now:
Harry Patel seems to be the only one running because he actually wants to improve the city — and he isn’t tied to a party. But unlikely to get votes in Townsville because he’s of Indian heritage.
Greaney is the only candidate with real experience. Like her or not, she’s never behaved disgracefully in office, but because she served with Jenny Hill many people won’t vote for her.
Dametto pushes pro-gun, anti-immigration, anti-abortion policies and has a history of excusing extremist rhetoric (Nazi). Views that sadly appeal to a large chunk of the white-bogan vote in Townsville.
Thompson is a festering boil and a chronic embarrassment. The fact that we’re still forced to hear from him, spreading his poison, is entirely down to the state government’s failure to lance him.
Dear Pie and Nesters,
Today, I had an informative and supportive conversation with staff from the Qld Electoral Commission, ph number 1300 881 665.
I will be away from Townsville for an extended period of time which includes the postal election date. Normally I would not worry and submit my reason for an inability to vote. However, I see this election is a watershed moment for Townsville and want my vote counted in not wanting Two/three face Thompson returned.
The QEC staff were extremely helpful in providing me with a solution to vote.
As we are entitled to expect, the ECQ has accomodated you as it shoulkd, it is a right not a privilge.
But the point here is that your situation is why and how mail-in voting was born … a laudable democratic addendum, but it is poor social analysis to think that blanket mail-in only voting in an election does not offer all sorts of pitfalls, an exclusivity that will continue Townsville’s famous lack of transparency. And suspicions.
And all in the name of ‘voter fatigue’, the nonsensical fodder shepherd McCabe fed to his council sheep, and this time, they did not turn up their noses at their lazily-acquired fodder. The majority … and McCabe … paid cynical lip service to the expenditure bogeyman, seeking some Mr Sheen for their halos. They have through their lazy acceptance of what they perceived as easy brownie points on council costs demonstrated how out-of-touch with public sentiment they are. If ever a boots and braces election was needed to start dispelling the stench around local politics, this would be it.
Brisbane has undoubtedly engineered McCabe’s recommendation, knowing full well our majority of councillors love a short cut that carries a false veneer of responsibility.
Voter fatigue? As we did with Hill, we would be lining up in droves with our balloting baseball bats to drive our message home … enough fucking around with Townsville.
I can’t see why we cannot have a proper election, polling-place centred (for those Trump affiliated- centered).
The fines for not voting in 2024 could have amassed millions of dollars. I don’t know if these funds would have gone to Qld’s consolidated revenue, but they would have more than compensated for the shonky performance by the QEC in 2024 and the financial consequences for the City of Townsville in 2025. I doubt that the Qld Government ever tried to recover what was owed.
That said, think of the huge amount of money the TT fiasco has cost the TCC already, let alone the damage wreaked on the TCC’s corporate image. And this money will never be recovered, despite the culpability of the main player.
It is sad, sad, sad, from all perspectives.
Hear hear, never a truer words spoken.
Love you Bob
Greaney has announced that she is running for Mayor. She has had a taste of wearing the Royal chamber furs and she likes the feel. Standby for more headshots to run for mayor.
But ya couldn’t vote for Food Trucks, couldja, even if ya had only half a brain? But then, there’s no saying what the local voting community might do cos they’ve done some horrible voting over the last 3 or 4 Local Government elections and committed the rest of us to untold misery. Please God they don’t do it again!!!
OK, you’ve had your moan, now tell us what the answer is.
Perhaps that the great unwashed (such as I) use some common sense for a change. After all, who wants TT, Kipping, or Greaney in the big seat. Nickie Dee is lookin’ better all the time!!!
It seems those with half a brain are happy to vote for Nazi apologists and people who think the law does not apply to them.
As we have already learned Doxie, you get what you vote for, so vote carefully and make sure you are informed and not just spiteful.
Greaney’s big announcement today in the BULLETIN that she’s running for Mayor has gone down like a lead balloon. As of late this afternoon, only 24 comments, many running along the lines of will you just go away?
It is too late now but an $80 fine for not voting would have only required 3,000 Townsvilians not to, to cover the cost of polling booths.
Is it too late now, though? Cannot the ECQ even now go back to the government with a change of mind, and recommend a full election process?
Only joking, Crisfulli knows a mail-in only is the best chance of getting his man Dametto up.
I would not trust the ECQ to get this postal vote process right, and any involvement from council will screw it up further. Joe McCabe is not worried about voter fatigue either, he is trying to save money alas in all the wrong places. Ditch a few useless projects, maybe get rid of a few unnecessary top positions and Consultants who charge like wounded bulls and create nothing but havoc. The top paying jobs for mates game is shocking and needs some investigation. This will free up more than enough funds to ensure an proper election that can put this crazy palaver behind us.
Nobody seems to understand that mail-in ONLY elections of any level are very different to the purpose for which the concept was created.
Be interesting to know how many elections, or by-election have been entirely mail-in. Some one previously mentioned Mackay. Any info, anybody?
I have been through a few elections in my time (too many to count) but I have never heard of this. The ECQ will have to get this one hundred percent right. It will only take a disgruntled losing candidate to challenge the result and the Courts will have us back doing it all over again. Probably the old way.
Very good point, Charlie. But one small upside: it’s doubtful conman ThreeNames will get enough votes to make a credible challenge. If karma is awake and well, he won’t even get his deposit back.
already been 5 by elections for qld local governments since full election in march 2024.. all postal. mackay, moreton bay, somerset, balonne and mareeba
they were all councillors though the likes of mackay have first past the post not divisions so everyone votes still
Yes, your point is well taken, none of them was for the office of mayor, so not so much riding on the outcome.
Here’s a statistic I found:
“In Queensland, under the Local Government Electoral Act 2011 (Qld), a Council may apply to the Minister to have their election conducted in whole or part as a postal ballot – 16 councils had full postal elections in the 2020 local government quadrennial elections as a result.”

Threenames has admitted to using AI to draft his response to the CCC investigation. What a fucking plonker. He really is a dopey and useless cunt. And the media are also probing his so-called cancer treatment. Again, it looks like a load of bullshit spun by our former shonky mayor.
Re cancer claim … this is interesting.
https://www.9news.com.au/videos/national/former-mayor-facing-accusations-he-exaggerated-medical-history/cmgalv1ws001d0hqjfxefowmn
I still maintain that his claim to be a long term volunteer at Camp Quality (charity for cancer kids) was also bullshit. I know a lot of volunteers who helped Camp Quality and no one can remember him doing volunteer work there. There was only one office to register, and all volunteers knew each other, but none remember him. The word is that of the last 3 NQ managers spanning the last 25 years, none remember him and his suggested (was it 10 or so) years of service.
Okay, you make a reasonably deducted point BUT listen Kenny, and all Nesters … the ‘Pie’s background makes him bristle at meaningless phrases like ‘the word is ….’ totally meaningless and smacks of fabrication. So if in this case there were just three managers over the past 25 years, that three phone calls, after which you can report more authoritatively to the Nest.
Vague nonsense like that is as unhelpful as it is unwelcome … this is a very serioiusissue in which we (sort of) get to decide.
Besides, no need for hyperventilating about this scumbag … Thompson is toast, Barry Birbauer is buggered, can’t see him getting under our guard again. Even the Bulletin is awake this time around.
Troy’s productivity will skyrocket. AI can generate bullshit a thousand times faster than he could in the old days.
As we prepare for the stampede of Mayoral Wannabes, and the inability for candidates to access voters at the polling booths, the only way to get the message face to face with constituents is to do the rounds of the neighborhood. My brother, Kevin, came up with an idea for the ‘Nest. Report in the ‘Nest who knocks on your door and what they had to say. When you post it, head it with, “Knockin’ on Kevin’s door”.
Droll, and sure, a bit of a laboured laugh, but The Magpie will pass … he has enough problems handling lying gasbags without inviting more.
I saw CLR Greaney on TV basically trying to undermine another Mayoral candidate by criticising his association with the Katter Party. She said something to the affect about how a lot of voters don’t like political parties being involved in local government. She stated that she is not a member of a political party nor has she even been, so she is obviously trying to target those voters. My guess is that there is a lot of them out there.
Greaney and her family are said to have been very strong Labor Party ties, which if true, explains her malignant presence on the Team Hill ticket.
She would do better to focus on her policies as Mayor. Undermining other candidates is tired and trashy.
Besides, if you give Dametto enough freedum, he will undermine himself.
Nutty Ducks really has something in for Damental
There’s nothing wrong with pointing out the flaws of other candidates.
