Galah: “Fool, Or Clown, Known For Noisy And Chaotic Behaviour”. So Apt That It’s Our Olympic Emblem.

A cockatoo cock-up that saw the Brisbane Olympic logo accidentally released ahead of time sounds ominously like the starter’s gun for a marathon of bureaucratic buffoonery … but in the end, the Olympic Organising Committee is unlikely to make us laugh, no matter how much it will remind us of Fawlty Towers.

But wait … is there an unintended political message in the design?

You Done Me Wrong .… an alternative title for conman Troy Thompson’s blunder into print … yes, he’s publishing a whinge-ography book about his plummet from grace,  but suddenly, we at The Nest find we have to update his alias of ‘TwoNames’ to ‘ThreeNames’.

The TCC might be trimming staff, but the Dudley Do Nothings aka TEL get four new board members, expanding their overall numbers by two .But despite solid career backgrounds, will the newbies bring the basic business ethics of their day jobs to the TEL table.  Wouldn’t count on it.

The latest Lansdown word salad from the TCC again shows why the TCC should not be developers.

Overseas, when it comes to the Orange Abomination, while there’s lots of funny weird, there’s rare funny haha  but a two word answer in a BBC comedy quiz show had The ‘Pie ROTFLMAO.  That’s included at our weekly look at the whacko week in the US.

If you like to ensure that The Nest remains your weekly ad-free read, you can help by throwing in a few shekels to help meet the blog’s ever-present costs. The link for a much needed donation is at the bottom of this week’s edition.

Lunkheads And Logos … Putting the Oh Oh into the OOC.

As one commentator said ‘the Olympic Organising Committee  had one job and …’   That job was to keep this secret until Monday.

Screenshot 2026-10-03 at 12.20.37 pm

But on Friday night, someone on the design team accidentally put this up on a YouTube post with a video – clearly meant for Monday release – titled ‘emblem explainer’. It had been put together to share  the thinking behind the design. It was only up in public for ‘a brief time and was quickly pulled down’.  But ‘quick’ in this electronic age really has no meaning, so there it was out in the world on Saturday morning for OOC members to admire while wiping the egg on their faces.

As the same commentator added,’ One wonders if organisers can’t get the basics like the emblem rollout right, what does that say about the rest of the Games rollout as a whole?‘ Sports Minister and former NRL referee Tim Mander was really caught offside, and tried to bluff his way out of it,  which met with open scoffing from one interviewer.

The idea is that the Pink Crested Cockatoo  and the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo represent the Olympic and Paralympic Games respectively. Now, let it be said, the design is nicely thought out, and visually fine.  But the historic inadequacy of words describing the visual was evident when we read the official explanation.

“Inspired by our reef, beaches, hinterland, and everything in between, they bring together the places, people and spirit that will take us to 2032. Distinctive. Unmistakably Queensland. And just a little bit cheeky.”

What? Said cockatoos are bloody everywhere in this country.

The statement went on that the design was meant to symbolise Queensland, with the ‘eye’ representing Brisbane.  Perhaps those of us in the regions might find more honest symbolise if we replace the word ‘eye’ with another part of the anatomy, lower down and around the back.  because this farrago is going to plop on us big time for a decade or more.

But For Some, This Was A Rorschach Ink Blot Test

Looking into the File of Unintended Consequences, Crisafulli and co might have a fit of the conniptions when they see this obvious mischief.

If you’ve ever heard a red crested cockatoo, you’ll instantly realise the connection. Could this be symbolising our Prime Minister heading for the opening ceremony in six years time? Shoot me now.

New Blood For Townsville Enterprise, But Will It Just Be An Anaemic Transfusion?

Although only two board members are leaving (Kevin Gill and Kathy Danaher), TEL has boosted its board numbers by four, adding two more to guide their very own good ship Marie Celeste on its mysterious voyage.  The new faces are:

Screenshot 2026-10-03 at 9.40.24 pm

In their regular occupations, every one of these people has to meet certain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), either in private contracts or management agreements, – the terms of which are none of our business;  those funded by the government which usually have publicly announced targets  (e.g Townsville Port), and, if investors are involved, publicly mandated, sometime on the ASX and/or in quarterly or annual reports.  Does anyone imagine that a businessman as astute as Chris Morris would not give Tim Richardson targets covering all Casino and hotel operations?  Tim Ackroyd most certainly would be in the KPI business at Dugald River MMG.  And Brigadier McCammon is in a business that runs, top to bottom on KPIs, and wields the power of enforcement in a number of ways, up to and including a stockade.

So will all these upstanding noteworthies recognise that TEL falls into either the public interest category or the investor category, since the Townsville ratepayers (and those of other participating councils) are, willingly of otherwise,  investors? Or anyway have a legitimate public interest in reasonable KPIs?   Taxpayers likewise. And set some benchmark targets for the public to measure TEL’s effectiveness? Or will they go along with the prevailing and insultingly false claim that TEL is simply fuelled by memberships fees and therefore it is a private organisation that is not answerable to any but their members?  Members themselves who apparently don’t get the benefit of any provable performance targets.

Money raised though TEL membership is a drop in the ocean of TEL income support, the greatest bulk being  rate and taxpayer funds through councils ‘partners’,  and state and federal programs and grants.  A glittering waterfall that pours into the coffers of this seemingly ineffectual and underperforming entity .

And all that before we even broach the ethics and conflict of interest arising from the mayor and a key councillor being board members, but who can influence councillors to vote to award approx. $750,000 of ratepayer funds annually to an organisation on whose board they sit.

The ‘Pie cannot realistically entertain any hope of this simple and ethically required change,   it’s plain to see that this galloping juggernaut of a rort has got away from the community, aided and abetted by the very entity supposed to monitor and call out this dishonesty, the Townsville Bulletin.

The Bulletin Is Moving Into Top Gear With Its Business Coverage.

Seriously?

As They Say ‘The Truth Is Out There’  But This Ain’t It.

Unfortunately, sometimes, mocking the afflicted is unavoidable.

They’ll be flocking to the stores in their tens … eleven if his mum has to buy her own copy.

And the medals, the medals ….

Screenshot 2026-10-03 at 4.57.34 pm

But there will be two other people who will be a tad miffed at this release.  Both are published authors,  one with the same name, the other using the name as a character.

The first of these looks like it could be in competition with our conman ex-mayor. A review on-line might fool you into thinking it’s written by our boy. It isn’t, but could’ve been.

“The Nostalgia of Trauma is a raw, darkly funny, and deeply moving memoir about the legacy of mental illness, neurodivergence, the weight of family obligation, and the unexpected healing power of friendship.”

Screenshot 2026-10-03 at 4.54.32 pm

The second book isn’t actually by Troy Thompson but by author of several books, Gary Crew,  who spookily features a Troy Thompson character  as its narrator.

Screenshot 2026-10-03 at 4.55.49 pm

The blurb for this book is even more confusing and could easily be mistaken for some autobiographical notes by Townsville’s most unloved son.

Troy Thompson’s Excellent Peotry (sic) Book follows Troy Thompson, a Year 6 Student in Ms. Kranke’s English class in Dagaburra, Australia.  Step into the head of a twelve-year-old Australian boy as he has his first experience with poetry. It’s a rocky but endlessly interesting journey., (It’s) moving, silly (and sometimes just a little gross).

Not to mention out of touch with truth and reality.

Speaking Of Truth And Reality …. And Utter Bullshit

Seriously, Mayor?

How’s this for meaningless claptrap …

Screenshot 2026-10-03 at 10.34.50 pm

This piece of prize ‘baffle ‘em with bullshit’ was plopped out by the council’s media cow a couple of weeks ago, and the ‘Pie has been trying to parse it ever since. Have a go yourself, this is the full thing.  It amounts to trying to sell a car with no engine as a going concern … Lansdown without water is a non-starter. For anything.

That main point in the release  is the nonsensical elevation of a stock standard document which is no more than a missionary position LG pro forma requirement.  Including that standard paper shuffling as ‘gaining. momentum’ is as believable as Mayor Meathead’s statement further on when he describes building a few roads in grandiose terms: ‘Milestones already delivered include the Jones Road upgrade and the opening of sealed public access to DriveIt NQ in May, while internal road works are expected to be complete in November. Further water and transport upgrades are progressing through tender evaluation and planning.’

Interestingly vague and evasive, we get a glancing mention of ‘water upgrades’ which are still tied up in red tape and economic uncertainty. This  means the whole benighted site still does not have the branch junction pipe and pumping facility from the Haughton Pipeline needed to make the site viable, let alone somehow attractive to investors. Yet interest is sky rocketing from possible tenants?  Psst, want to buy a tin of tartan paint, cheap?

And the Haughton pipeline itself isn’t at any meaningful  operational level at last report, with its own pump station problems. And since Cameron Dick’s ego trip  stiffed the Townsville ratepayer of $79m to be spent on the Haughton pipeline, where the fuck is that $303 million for Lansdown itself over the next seven years coming from?  Assume the position and brace yourselves, folks.

Then note the only interest expressed in becoming a tenant – a Quinbrook company creating the usual mythical number of jobs, 1200.the mayor says.   Given that Sun Metals massive operation employs at tops 450,  then the bulk of those Quinbrook jobs are in short term construction, and even then, the best the council has is a non-binding, ordinary MOU.  And no mention of the crucial co-development of the renewable energy projects including the Lansdown Solar West project (up to 150 MW AC solar) and the Supernode North battery energy storage system (780 MW / 2,200 MWh capacity).

Then there’s this bit: ““We’ve created the conditions for industry to succeed through strategic planning, investment in enabling infrastructure and strong advocacy with all levels of government.’ The burning question there is, if you want us to believe that, tell us who is doing the advocating. If it’s TEL,  that explains the situation in a nutshell. We’re fucked.

This sort of opaque albeit rational-sounding gobbledegook is a case study in lack of governance transparency. If the ratepayers are stumping up a good part of that $303million for this development, with Solarquartz and its supporting energy sources operation in three years time,  they deserve more than this bare faced lie “The move further strengthens Lansdown’s position as one of Australia’s most significant emerging advanced manufacturing and processing hubs.”

Present tense? It’s position as what?  Manufacturing hub for unicorns?

This whole schmozzle of both action and communications shows again why the TCC should not never take on the role of developer.  The downside is there for all see in the dusty distance of Woodstock.

It’s Not Just The Bulletin (Ot The Magpie, For That Matter) Missing Something

With the proliferation of social media and modern technology, we are all prey to the sin of omission. That is, typos. especially that missing letter. We’ve all done it, and will again, but we are now in exalted company … the White House.

Someone over the has had their arse kicked until their nose bled (or more likely led away by ICE goons, never to be heard of again).

But the error had a certain amount of karma involved in an embarrassing boo-boo, because it went unnoticed by the tech moguls as well as the stable genius himself. The occasion was the (look, no laughing, right) signing of an agreement by the tech bros to …  snicker, snurffle  … voluntarily police …. oh, stoppit … themselves when it came to  … oh, spare me … the development of AI. (Uncontrollable guffawing.)

Screenshot 2026-10-02 at 11.37.01 am

And AI  is now to be called SI, as in Super Intelligence,  by decree of Trump. And you don’t question the President of the  … the …  well,  we’re not sure when he put his lie detector graph  of a signature above his title.

Reading down that list of names put the ‘Pie in mind of this.

Interesting to note that ‘united’ is an anagram of ‘untied’.

But anyway …

marina Hyde Screen Shot 2022-10-02 at 10.23.12 am

That was the ‘Pie’s reaction to the news this weekend that Marina Hyde has written her last column for the Guardian. She is upping stumps after 25 years of hilarious acid wit and insight into all arenas of the human condition – not many are aware she is also a well regarded and award winning writer on sport. Her final column had many moments of recognition for The Magpie (not that he in any way puts himself anywhere near the Hyde pantheon).

Anyway, not that she’ll see ithis  but Marina, thanks for  hilarious enlightenment you conjured up so regularly.  And The ‘Pie wants you to know that he always credited you if he used any of your brilliant lines.  Well, nearly always.

You’re on Google alert for whenever you pop up again.

And A Final Note, It’s Always Good To Leave You Laughing

Cliches are true (because they’ve stood the test of time heh heh) and a ‘Pie favourite is ‘brevity is the soul of wit’.  The only thing better than a snappy one liner retort is the one or two word retort.  And he has come across one that has had him helplessly laughing from time to time as he recalls it.

It  came at the very end of this clip of the clever BBC show ‘I’m Sorry, I Haven’t A Clue’, in which a panel is asked to give alternative definitions of words or phrases. In this episode, all the answers are funny as only the Poms know how, but the final one is for the ages … and guaranteed to make you have a giggle every time you recall it.

The new TEL directors are good people with solid careers behind them. Along with the Port CEO, they work hard and have reputations to protect. Hopefully they bring some proper accountability and measurable outcomes with them. They certainly don’t need the baggage.

So our mate has a book. I’ll buy one, love a good fiction. If the social numbers being reported are right, 1M+ views in 48 hours and 2,481 pre-orders, then they will sell plenty more, but I suspect they are selling for different reasons than he thinks, that’s for sure. I’m told plenty of others are curious too, including legal counsel. I’m more interested in what the ‘confidential’ documents actually show. Interesting times ahead.

Lansdown and Haughton will be debated for decades because ratepayers are carrying the consequences. I still think the smarter model was selling the land and having the State carry the major enabling infrastructure. Industrial development is one thing; turning a council into a developer is another.

  2. Ben Rumson says:

Will Threenames book be on the fiction shelf or the mental health shelf?

  3. Not standing for the (pugilist) mayor says:

Tim Richardson is credited as being CEO of the Entertainment Centre along with the rest of the Morris empire up here. If TECC is part of a commercial group why are the public expected to stump up for its repair instead of the owners. Gabrielli gets quite rightly pilloried for not maintaining the Great Northern but these leeches put their hand out for more.

    • Alahazbin says:

NSFpM. Didn’t the TCC have their stake in the TEEC valued at zero and turned over their 20% share back to the Casino, so no public money involved these days.

      • The Magpie says:

Not correct Ala, but the TEEC ownership is a bit of a dog’s dinner arrangement, with the TCC retaining 80% and the Breakwater Island Trust 20%, which is heavily associated with Morris’s adjacent casino and hotels. While a bit complicated, the centre is effectively managed by the BI Trust, which in turn effectively makes the Casino’s GM (and new TEL board member) Tim Richardson the day to day boss. By memory, there was a report some time ago that the TCC had written down the paper value drastically (some suggested it was just a single dollar) but The ‘Pie can’t find any record or evidence of that, despite the issue being subject of some spirited comment on the blog. Seem to recall old Nest mate Phil Batty had some enlightening comments about it.

No matter, given the spectacular tropical location of the centre, its exposure to ferry travellers, especially tourists, to cruise visitors and its management arrangement, it is a valuable community asset and should remain where it is and be refurbished by whatever fair arrangement can be reached. Especially if we get the Crocs back.

All we need then is the council to get its finger out of their priority-blocked bum and install broadcast quality lights at Riverway, and Townsville really will be an all-round sporting destination.

        • Not standing for the (pugilist) mayor says:

The trust deed shows that Colonial Liesure Group is responsible for ongoing maintenance and upgrade and indemnifies council against all additional costs beyond the agreed operating budget TCC provides. The cost of these upgrades is quite simply at the feet of Chris Morris for hi. To cover from the millions be skims from the community in gambling revenues.

        • Guy says:

I’d say instead of spending anymore money the council should concentrate on

1 not borrowing any more money

          2 paying off the debt

  4. One-legged tap dancer says:

Surely the new TEL board members will put a stop to the fairytale economic benefits trotted out by the CEO and MS Woolfe in respect of everything from pop concerts to army landing craft bases.
Strewth, the TEL calculations have taken over from Rabby Krayons famous method of estimating Cowboys crowd numbers in the bad old days: count the heads and multiply by a factor that gets the required result.
At least Rabieh’s guesstimates were within a 20% range of belief.
With TEL the sky’s the limit.

  5. Paul Eddington says:

I would have thought that the OOC was more Yes Minister than Fawlty Towers, a hospital with no patients anyone?

  6. Prince Rollmop says:

Another great blog Magpie. However I feel for you, writing about TEL, Thompson, and Trump would have had you reaching for the spew bucket. But hey, at least you don’t have to look at any new half naked photos of Mayor Dick Stiletto!

So TEL receives an addiction 2 Directors and a total of 4 new Directors. It’s a start, but it’s not enough. Claudia Bumme needs to be removed, and Woolfe can go too. Fresh leadership is well overdue. Hopefully the mostly new board will set some KPI’s for Bumme and actually make these fuckers do some work. The days of long lunches and excessive morning tea’s in the kitchen should be a thing of the past. Time for some real work to be done on behalf of Townsville.

As for Threenames, hopefully his ridiculous book launch is a failure and he loses money on his latest scheme to turn an easy buck. Even Alan Joyce’s memoir has only sold 2,500 copies. Nobody is interested in the fudge packer’s story about his time at Qantas and his coming out of the closet. Just as with Threenames book – nobody is interested in the ramblings of a lying piece of shit who clearly has some very real mental health issues.

    • Steve Jones says:

Agree with you, remove Brumme, Wolfe, but don’t let Cazzulino, Meares, Turner, Booth, Wilson, or others in, TEL needs none of the party chasers, new blood is best. Time for a bloke again, too much woke crap. I’m not opposed to Molachino or Dan Ryder, both have solid backing across Townsville.

Thompson’s book of fiction has hit $74k in pre-sales, or 2481 he stated online in this morning’s everything Townsville post, but I don’t know how much his publisher gets out of that though. I’ve reserved one to have a chuckle, love a good fiction. 007 meets Rambo, at Walker street…. Haha

      • The Magpie says:

You believe those figures? $30 a throw? Mind you, would’ve been 2482, but the coppers shot Dezi Freeman.

        • Steve Jones says:

No idea, I just read what was put out on Facebook. He still got 5000 votes after everything was put out there, so I’m not surprised by anything anymore tbh.

          • The Magpie says:

Fair enough, but on that election, Jenny Hill lost it, he won it by default, especially when Fran O’Callaghan had to step aside through illness. And mate, be assured ‘everything’ WASN’T put out there, The ‘Pie broke the story but has only a limited selective and discerning readership … the Bulletin had the same info but refused to print it in time to inform voters – not that voters really had much choice by then.

          • Bob says:

Magpie, I think you have the November 2025 by-election result mixed up with the March 2024 Mayoral election (part of the all-Queensland local government elections). After Thompson’s 18 months of mayoral farce, fuck-ups and confabulations, the whole town was finally fully aware of who he was and what he could get up to. We had already seen the end of Jenny Hill and Fran O’Callaghan (RIP), it was just a matter of electing a new mayor and getting back into the normal swing of things. The result:
            Gleeson 1,204 votes
            Thompson 5,046
            Patel 2,236
            Dametto 62,896
            Poulsen 1,912
            Greaney 13,337
            Jacob 2,881
            Kuene 5,415
            Kippen 7,325

            Informal 1,051

            Total Votes 103,303

So even knowing everything we did and getting plenty of coverage in all media up until by-election day, there were still more than 5,000 people who voted for Troy Thompson. They may not buy his book (they may not all be able to read) but they sure are out there.

  7. Percy says:

Threenames book should be titled; “Fucktard, the story of conman Mayor”.

  8. cynic says:

I really hope Vlandys and co are contributing to Jai’s recovery medical costs, I mean they are milking itfor all it’s worth.

    • Maggie Moggie says:

It has been reported that the musicians who performed at last nights NRL donated their appearance fees to research for MND, which is commendable.
But to butcher the song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is unforgivable. The NRL should of played the recording by Gerry and the Pacemakers, sang by the late Gerry Marsden in 1963, which became the anthem of the Liverpool Football club, then football clubs around the world.
The song was written by Richard Rogers & Oscar Hammerstein in 1945 for the broadway musical ‘Carousel’.

      • Not standing for the (pugilist) mayor says:

I didn’t see the broadcast. Did they play the MND version “You’ll Never Walk Again” instead?

        I’ll show myself out.

  9. Ben Rumson says:

    Dear ‘Pie,

Regarding Three Names Thompson’s photograph on the front of his book he has his hands in his pockets. He is in formal attire, complete with someone’s medals, and choses this photo for his book cover, hands in pockets. Hands in pockets is disrespectful at such occasions. This demonstrates he is a slovenly ignoramus.

How do I know about hands in pockets and the messages it sends? Get a drink, make yourself comfortable as I am about to tell you, for better or worse.

I am a graduate of the Army Apprentice School Balcolme. It has made me the man I am today, undetected crime and that sort of thing. Anyway, where were we : pockets.

In my junior year, while in the evening mess line (thats queuing up for the evening meal, every bloody day for the two years I was there) I was caught with my hands in my pockets by a Senior Apprentice NCO. Together with a verbal counselling ( in those days there were other forms of counselling) I was ordered to sew up my dinner trousers pockets, 18 stitches to the inch, for two weeks. Hands in pockets in the presents of elders and betters was disrespectful.

So, dear ‘Pie, here we have it. The values and etiquette of formal or official occasions has not changed since I was a sprog, and here we have on the front cover of his ‘remonstration’ his hands in his pockets.
This front cover is either a monumental ‘UP YOURS’ or a monumental display of IGNORANCE.

  10. Turd Sniffer says:

It’s a bit rich of TCC calling the Landsdown Commercial Framework, “gaining momentum”. The Council was already presenting essentially the same Commercial Framework to industry back in July 2025.

What happened in September 2026 was largely the formal endorsement of a framework that had been developed and publicly spruiked more than a year earlier.

Useful administrative housekeeping? Sure. A “major milestone” proving Lansdown is charging ahead? That’s some ‘industrial’-strength PR inflation.

  11. Maggie Moggie says:

    A Bit Of Island News
Maggie Island has a group known as ‘Gethin & the Zealots’, who also go under the name of Magnetic Island Nature Care.
Whilst the group is not musical, they could be classed as stand up comics, making it up as they go along. Their V/President, also known as the island’s data centre or a big bag of hot air, is a seasoned activist.
What is comical is that TCC seems to believe every thing they say?
It was revealed at Saturday’s MIRRA meeting that TCC has to get approval from MINCA to release treated water from the Picnic Bay Water Treatment Plant onto TCC owned land, adjacent to the Transfer Station.
Even though TCC does have permit to do so from EPA. Negotiations between The Zealots & council have been taking place for 10 years now, yet no one will claim to has come to an impasse.

Hence no new sewerage connections are allowed in Picnic Bay/ Nelly Bay. Although the new Picnic Bay Hotel development was approved and will be sewered, because they were already connected.
The average resident has to install expensive, smelly and ineffective bio cycle systems, which are a health issue in this climate.

What was also revealed at the meeting, is that former Mayor Hill affectionally known as Mayor Mullet continually lied whilst attending the MIRRA meetings. Where she stated on many occasions the water from the treatment plant was drinkable.

    • Bob says:

MM, you must be joking. Mayor Hill was never known “affectionately” around here. But if she said the effluent water from the Picnic Bay membrane tertiary sewerage treatment plant was “drinkable” and demonstrated it (which I doubt) she would probably be pretty right. Most people would survive such a dare as they would drinking straight from the Ross River dam. There is a big difference though between “drinkable” and legally “potable”. I notice that today the water from the Douglas treatment plant is 99.92% aligned with the Australian Water standard – I could get affectionate about that.

      • Maggie Moggie says:

        Bob,
when the Picnic Bay Water Treatment plant was opened, Cr. Kirkpatick consumed a glass of the liquid. It then became folklore and was picked up by Mayor Mullet.
Since then on many occasions the issue of sewerage has been raised and the lack of connections available – the treatment plant currently stands at about 67% capacity.
The problem being they have too much treated water.
The council although having a licence ( not a permit) from EPA to release water onto Lot 2 which TCC adjacent land next to the Transfer Station, which MINCA is opposed to. Now remembering before the Transfer Station was built at its current location, MINCA claimed the area was pristine wetlands. Which of course it wasn’t, it was filled with dumped cars and rubbish.

The saga has been long and protracted and the question why should TCC have to get approval from MINCA has never been answered?
MINCA has a membership of about 100 many of whom hold extreme views.

The next step will be asking CEO Joe McCabe to please explain.

        • The Magpie says:

Ah, dear me, yet another layer of the Maggie Island social onion is revealed.

          • Maggie Whinge Alot says:

            Yes Mr Magpie
You are correct, certainly not clear and transparent dealings. Back room deals.
Seems the zealots have some sort of paranoia about weeds. Have they smoked too much weed? Plenty of it growing on the west side, but that weed is considered ok.
Apart from being zealots they are also hypocrites.

        • Bob says:

MM, not sure about how or why TCC have to ‘get approval from MINCA’. I’m reminded of the Museum of Underwater Art which ultimately failed in its dogged attempts to ‘get approval’ from the Maggie Island community. On that occasion, years ago now, the proposed sculpture installation was approved at the highest levels, funded by the state government and backed by the big end of Townsville. But strangely enough, each of the disparate community groups on MI found a way to cooperate and force the hand of the state to rethink and take the proposal elsewhere. Apparently sometimes the locals there know or feel strongly about stuff that us mainlanders just don’t get – regardless of licences, permits or political overreach.

          • Maggie Moggie says:

            Bob,
Oh please spare me with; ‘Apparently sometimes the locals there know or feel strongly about stuff that us mainlanders just don’t get – regardless of licences, permits or political overreach.’

We are talking about 1 small group MINCA, which comprise of about 100 members.

There are residents in Picnic Bay and Nelly Bay who would like to be able to connect up to the treatment plant, but they cannot, why?
We have an number of old and failing septic tanks across the island, they are a human health hazard and an environmental disaster just waiting to happen, in upcoming big wet seasons.
To install new bio cycles systems are costly about $30K a system, which are ineffective as well as smelly.
Imagine if MINCA had there way every property on the island would have a composting toilet, the whole island would smell like a barn yard and disease would be rampant?

Several residents are seeking legal advice on this matter, which will not only be costly for TCC but also for the MINCA executive.

          • Chasmac says:

Maggie Moggie, recently elected to the executive of MIRRA, is convinced there’s a secretive conspiracy by Magnetic Island Nature Care Association (MINCA) to take control of TCC’s land and wastewater management on the Island. Maggie Whinge Alot has similar misgivings. Both would benefit (maybe) from reading the publicly available material published on the minca.org website:

            https://www.minca.org/wastewater-disposal.html

  12. Steve Jones says:

Wednesdays TCC meeting: This one looks pretty ordinary to me. Council is recommending $8,131.94 for a Christmas party in a park, effectively covering the entire cost. What’s more interesting is the assessment says Full Noise Promotions Inc was only established in May 2026 and couldn’t provide a financial statement, yet the same scorecard lists Council support going back three financial years.

Maybe there’s a perfectly innocent explanation, but surely someone at Walker Street should explain who received those earlier grants and why the funding has now jumped to more than $8,000. Ratepayer grants aren’t free money. A little transparency wouldn’t hurt.

    • Bob says:

Steve, rather than quibbling over some harmless community event I would have thought the $18m proposed expenditure on “City Activation” would be a much meatier item in tomorrow’s Agenda for critical analysis. This is the place where TCC, TEL, the Chamber of Commerce and CBD business interests get into bed together.

      • Prince Rollmop says:

Bob, while we are at it. With that grub Albo reducing disaster funding from 64% to 50%, I wonder how TCC are going to to fund that shortfall? I haven’t seen anything official as yet.

        • The Magpie says:

As The ‘Pie understands it, the TCC, along with all other Qld councils, are today simply saying they can’t fund it. The wheels really are falling off Labor, but we’re left with no palatable choice at the ballot box. And they wonder why One Notion is making inroads – not that that is much comfort, the combined avarice and ignorance of Hanson and Ashby is a disaster of a different sort which would leave us a even more economically vulnerable nation than we already are.

      • Steve Jones says:

Bob, I agree the $18m Activation Plan is the much bigger fish, but the $8,131 grant is exactly the same principle. Small amounts matter too.

The real issue is transparency. With the Activation Plan we’re talking about more than $18m, including $6.8m for NAFA, $450k for Cotters, a $250k activation fund still “to be developed”, $2.4m dependent on pending grant funding and another program manager.

Then there is all the expenditure that ratepayers struggle to follow through consultants, contractors and smaller procurements. Breaking expenditure into amounts below a public reporting threshold shouldn’t make scrutiny disappear. I don’t care who is mates with whom. I want to know who gets the money, what process was followed, what was delivered and whether ratepayers got value for money.

        That’s transparency, not quibbling.

  13. Poonami Paul says:

Thompson’s second book will be called “A Lesson in Fuckwittery, the Troy Birnbrauer Story”. It will include photographs Michelle and Mummy and also photos of the studio that he built. Naturally it’s fiction as the serial Townsville bullshit artist couldn’t lie straight in bed.

  14. Michael Knight says:

A gold nugget for the Astonisher’s new Walker Street Whispers to expose.

    • The Magpie says:

Yeah, pretty pathetic attempt to clone the ‘insider’ style of metro gossip columns. But crikey, a paper’s got to do somthing to replicate the attraction of other sites …. like The Townsville Magpie. Heh heh heh.

      • Steve Jones says:

Walker Street Whispers, just another group trying to replicate the Townsville Magpie, nothing more. Bulletin is trying, but failing miserably, led by another food truck participant in Poulsen

        • The Magpie says:

The Courier, the Telegraph, even the Oz, all have gossipy columns along these lines, but to succeed, they need an informed and trusted writer of wit who can join dots on a regular basis. No one at the paper is allowed (or wants to) stick around the length of time it takes to build up contacts who trust you. Anyone attempting it at the Astonisher (and it’s hard to believe this uneven gallimaufry is collected or written by one single galoot) is doomed to fail, because such a column is bound up tighter than an Egyptian mummy in legal flinching, imperatives from the adverting manager and no doubt the iditor’s list of untouchables … and ergo, the untouchables list of untouchables.)

The only staffer who could get close to what is required (and in fact does occasionally) is Ando, whose been around doing solid reporting, sane political analysis and slyly clever writing for various publications since before most of his current colleagues learnt to join all those alphabetty shapes to make running writing.

Terry Butts must be rolling in his grave at these pathetic attempts at being edgy.

  15. Woodduck says:

If the ABC is to be believed, Albanese and Bowen both refused to wear the floral garland that was given to leaders in Tuvalu as a part of their traditional welcome. Yet their happy for Australians to listen to Welcome to Country whether they want to or not, hypocrisy at best.

  16. Prince Rollmop says:

Good lord, the Townsville Bullshittin has released its top 50 most influential people and Claudia Bumme came in at number 10. Somebody hand me a sick bag! This town is fucked.

    • The Magpie says:

Just catching up, Mopsey. Check out the Sept 27 edition of the Nest.

      • Prince Rollmop says:

I see that our Hawaiian shirt wearing PM has ‘changed his position’ and will no longer stiff the Queensland councils when it comes to disaster relief funding. That’s the beauty of having a weak, nutless and spineless PM. It is however good news for councils.

Snake Chalmers has also ‘changed his position’ on credit card payments being used to pay the ATO. A wise move. It doesn’t change the fact that on many matters, small businesses are still being ass pounded by the ATO, bureaucrats, and regulators.

  17. Maggie Moggie says:

    .

I hit a nerve hey Charlie?
I have obtained a copy of the recording of the last Saturday’s meeting, I know exactly what the GM Travis Richards of TCC Water Services TCC said.
I also have recordings of various TCC community consultation meetings including the Sewerage Strategy.
I also have documentation of the placement of the Magnetic Island Transer Station.
You see your not the only one, who has a vast collection of data.

My name is not Maggie, just as your name is not Charlie and Gethin’s first name is not Gethin.
But you really don’t know much about Cats, and who the Moggie is??

  18. The Swoop says:

Richardson has managed to clean up/out some of the overdue management at the casino, lets hope he can do the same at TEL if he has any ticker. One of the old drivers (I wont put his name up) told me the place has never performed better and he’s cleaned up the mess the former CEO left with his followers
