Like A Brown Floater That Just Won’t Drown, TwoNames Thompson Plops To The Surface Again …

… and openly promises disruption, distraction, division and lawfare if he makes a successful run for the council in the Division 1 by-election. Thompson has learnt nothing from his recent fleeting acquaintance with reality, and is already telling outright lies even before he’s made a final decision to run. The ‘Pie tries to keep count.

Genius!! Hanson Solves Overcrowded Gaol Crisis: ‘If You Don’t Like It, Just Leave.’  “If it works for women trapped in domestic violence, why can’t inmates donate their space for others?” she seems to reasonably ask. As its leader continues her life-long wrestle with English, The ‘Pie takes a crack at analysing One Notion’s temporary rise in popularity. Let’s hope the established parties are quick learners.

Did you know that cities hosting the Olympics can petition for a one-off inclusion of a non-Olympic sport for their Games? (Breakdancing, anyone?) The ‘Pie has a few suggestions for Brisbane. Have you got any?

And too much bang for their bucks? Americans are dismayed to learn that the toddler terrorist’s  Iran tantrum has just ka-chinged up a $37billion bill. So far. Now there are signs unrest is growing, as Americans catch up with the rest of the world saying they’ve had enough. Better late than never, as our regular US gallery tells the story.

Plus a thigh slapper featuring this week’s British Prime Minister.

If you can offer some much needed help with Nest finances, you can do so by hitting the donate button at the bottom of the blog. It will be greatly appreciated.

Seriously, It Must Again Be Asked: What The Fuck Is Up With This Man?

RUOK, Troy?

It’s not that Troy Thompson is publicly musing about whether he will nominate to run for Townsville Council’s Division One vacancy, although that’s weird enough in itself. No, it is that in his musing in a social media post the FB equivalent of War and Peace, he openly promises council chamber disruption, legal challenges and disharmony if he makes it back to Walker Street. If you’re of a mind to, you can read here, but The ‘Pie will just deal with a few matters therein.

This is not going to be some alarmist pile-on of a known crook, it is the hesitation of reporting this situation that may draw accusations that The Magpie is mocking the afflicted. But Thompson is really mocking himself, while at the same time mocking those he seeks to represent. It really is deeply disturbing that someone who is counting on voters’ amnesia (and good luck with that, me old shyster) decides to remind them precisely of the destructive, costly and open lying that ended his previous ill-starred tenure.

And all with an emotionally triggering photograph.

Screenshot 2026-07-25 at 11.02.43 pm

But judge for yourself from these excerpts from his ‘manifesto’. Let’s start with this prize bit of sophistry.

The past two years have played out very publicly.

There have been headlines, allegations and plenty of opinions.

From the very beginning, I have refuted every allegation made against me, and that position has never changed.

People are entitled to their opinions.

The facts, however, remain unchanged.

There were no criminal charges.

There were no convictions.

There were no court findings against me during my time in office.

The CCC report is a public document. It is not a court finding.

I’ll leave it there.

You would just love to leave it there, chum, but The ‘Pie won’t. It’s clear your first lie is that you have ‘refuted’ everything. One is entitled to expect a basic understanding of English from their aspiring representatives, but you clearly do not know the difference between ‘deny’ (a personal opinion)  and  ‘refute’ (proving that an allegation is false).

Screenshot 2026-07-24 at 10.12.34 pm

So you have refuted nothing. All you have done is ‘deny’ the allegations and even denied the proven lies you told the electorate about your Army service, your non-existent uni degrees and your totally false claims of being a cancer sufferer.

You were a crook then, Troy, and you remain one now, because you won’t even acknowledge – in the face of all empirical evidence – that you did anything wrong, it was apparently the fault of others, critics and dark forces in lived in the rafters and came at you in the night..

Moving on, there is then this further bit of self-promoting hucksterism.

The next Division 1 councillor will have less than two years remaining in this council term.

There won’t be much time to learn the role. Experience matters.

As Mayor, I wasn’t responsible for one division, I had to understand the entire organisation.

The budget, the debt, the legislation, infrastructure planning, governance, how decisions are made, how reports are written, where money is spent and when difficult questions need to be asked.

That experience doesn’t disappear because you’ve left office.

It stays with you.

You arrogant goose. You understood governance, legislation?  Two areas that were primarily responsible for you being shit-canned last time. You think threatening to physically assault the CEO is how things work?  A Crime and Corruption Commission investigation uncovered about 9000 WhatsApp messages between  you and an adviser plotting against council staff, including threats of physical violence against the chief executive officer and councillors.

In one message exchange, one of your sovereign citizen advisers (adviser said that they should kick the chief executive in the balls and punch councillors in the guts. And you didn’t reprimand them, advising them that this was contrary to good governance and certainly against state legislation. Or was it Stephen Lane, that sort of thing is about his speed, just ask Les Walker.

Outside council, do you think it is any sort of OK governance for an aspiring public representative to unsuccessfully attempt to have this blog hacked and disabled because of criticism of you?

You have clearly learnt nothing from your ‘experience’,  Troy, which was much more instructive personally than you care to talk about. And suggesting no one else could take on the role of a councillor as adequately as you could smacks of insult, arrogance and further ambitions beyond divisional representation.

“I’ll continue asking difficult questions about unnecessary spending, excessive bureaucracy, consultants and projects that don’t represent value for money”.

Presumably questions beyond the borders of Division One, but The ‘Pie seems to remember you telling councillors during your brief stint in the mayoral chair that they should stick to their divisional work and leave the bigger stuff to yourself.

Certainly, those questions you pose need to be asked, but in the context of accepted good governance and respect, not in an asinine mostly ill-informed manner to further personal ambition. And further the ambitions of your shadowy supporters, the mental cripples and emotional hunchbacks in the My Place sovereign citizen lala land.

Give it a miss, Troy, give Townsville a bloody break, mate. And give yourself one, too, and get some serious help.

Liar, Liar, Hair On Fire … Calling Out Hanson’s Deliberately Targeted DV Rant

For a woman challenged by the English language – as exemplified by her now famous ‘please explain’, asking her 60 Minutes interviewer to explain what xenophobia meant – Pauline Hanson’s literacy hasn’t improved much. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know exactly what she’s doing.

Screenshot 2026-07-26 at 2.05.25 am

In a carefully planned strategy, probably thought up by her noisome pet gnome, her posturing chief of staff James Ashby, Hanson did a fine job of deliberate rage farming and publicity reaping with her comment that domestic violence is a ‘two way street’. By any measure, that meant she was saying ‘provocation was justification’ – provocation meaning a woman standing up for individual rights of safety and individuality.

You couldn’t find a better example of victim blaming. The storm of indignation at this shallow callousness was swift and universal, so Hanson next day waffled backwards, saying her words were taken ‘out of context’, what she was suggesting was that if women didn’t like the response to a demand for personal respect, just leave.

Problem solves, eh, simples, no, as the Russian meerkat says? But that’s not context, that’s a lame attempt to walk back a statement in the face of criticism, it is a favourite political go-to when caught out. It was unmistakably victim blaming. Although quite a few of them won’t be concerned by this … they’re dead.

Looking closely at the whole episode, The ‘Pie is convinced this whole thing was no mistake, and not – to use the clumsy modern term – ‘a misspeak’.  One Notion’s political navigators had apparently picked up on the populist front bar mantra of men as victims, entrapped by woke anti-bloke rules that gave women in the home power – hell, even equality  -with them.  This allowed scheming females to push some poor blokes to the limit with nagging, whingeing and legal threats, fair dinkum, some of ‘em really needed a clip around the ear, or a thump or two to keep ‘em in line.

This played directly to a cohort of valuable support for One Nation’s populist agenda, with a surprisingly wide range of ages, from the generational sneer of ‘the place has gone to the dogs, not like the old days’ to the more recent rise of the disaffected young male youth influenced by the likes of the Tate brothers.

From this low social bar was born Hanson’s ‘two way street’ which in effect was saying to victims , 95% who are women, to cop it sweet or fuck off. From home, safe shelter and often children. A deliberate simple-minded philosophy from a devious mind.  For in just those three words ‘two way street’ lay a bonanza of publicity and criticism that at its core would play to exactly the audience Hanson is dangerously courting.

Hanson’s rise in popularity is a result of the smug complacency and tin ear of the mainstream parties, where social engineering and corporate control of power have crossed an unacceptable line.  One Nation has been  a useful as a reality check for the current political system, but are they listening.  Hanson’s half truths and overreach often blur a legitimate core message clearly expressing the issues of concern to a wide swath of the electorate, but she can only name the problem, not any coherent answer.  are the main stream parties finally listening, and are they willingly  or unwillingly ready to start listening?  As they say, there’s nothing like being due to be be shot in the morning to concentrate the mind.  And shot they will be if they don’t start litening.

But endorsing domestic violence will never be accepted, legally or informally,  by the vast majority of decent Australians of any background.

Is Dwarf Throwing About To Make A Temporary Comeback?

Screenshot 2026-07-26 at 2.22.20 am

During the week, The ‘Pie was reminded that Olympic host cities/countries can petition the Olympic management to include a particular non-Olympic sport for their Games only.  It is usually to highlight a localised sport, and not intended as a permanent inclusion in the accepted list of sports which greed has now expanded to the point of diluting and devaluing the Olympic cachet.

So will the Queensland Government seek to have a uniquely Queensland ‘sport’ included in the 2032 economic disaster heading our way? And if so, what?

The Gold Coast was home to dwarf throwing back in the day, and although that has since fallen foul of the fun police, a resurgence might be argued for the run-up and participation of the Brisbane Games. The dwarf employment situation is a bit dire at the moment, especially since upskirting has been outlawed, so perhaps an argument could be made for an Olympic interlude, mi’lord?

But there are plenty of other possibilities that could reflect our major preoccupations around here, although some might be lost in translation. Like ‘Passing The Buck’ might be vetoed in Paris on the grounds of mistaken animal cruelty and Australia’s paucity of a reindeer population. Similarly, our popular pastime of ‘Punching Down’ might be misinterpreted as an unpleasant variation involving dwarfs who refuse to be thrown.

Niche sports pose problems, too, like ‘Evading The Question’, (unfortunately, probably impractical, because the field would be restricted to politicians, their staff, and husbands who come home at 2am with lipstick on their collars).

No, The ‘Pie thinks a better chance of inclusion would be to devise a variation on a traditional sport. He rather favours two track and field events with entrants restricted to neo-nazis, Jehovah Witness door knockers, My Place Sovereign Citizens and American Presidents. The events would be Catching The Javelin and Heading The Shot.

Getting The Message In America

For the current social media cleverness, there is nothing that carries a message’s impact quite like the old fashioned airing of a grievance in a prominent public place. This is an idea that has been rejuvenated in the USA, and the messages are getting savagely to the point. Overpass bridges are proving to be great places to have one’s say. Like this one in Ohio.

And this one in California, referring to the mid term elections where the Republicans might not have the necessart numbers.

It seems to me that Twonames Thompson is the useful idiot for the Sovereign Citizen movement. This is a threat to be taken seriously as these deluded but determined fuckwits have successfully penetrated local governments elsewhere winding back the public good, eg wide spread dental care through fluoridated water, a measure confirmed safe @ by health scientists.
    (Sorry ‘Pie, long sentence. )

  2. Barry says:

Troy Troy Troy, you deluded shit stain. Do you think people’s memories are that short? You’re held in the same category as Hill, Ralston, Gill and other parasites that have graced Townsville’s history pages over the years and left a stain on our town. Just fuck off mate, please….

  3. Prince Rollmop says:

Nice sleep-in this morning. Brekky, coffee, and the Magpies Nest. Thanks Mal.

It’s a real shame that serial pest Twonames is sniffing around TCC again, unbelievable. Cant Michelle or Mum talk the fool out of trying to be a Councillor again? Or are they equally deluded and also under his spell?

  4. Ducks Nuts says:

You are correct that there’s a clever strategy behind the smear campaign against DV victims.

There’s another one running closely beside it suggesting that women are falsely accusing men of DV in order to claim child support. Because somehow in a ONP apologists brain, what women want most of all is to raise children on their own, supplemented by the measly amount contributed by child support.

It seems to me that someone in ONP headquarters has a bee in their bonnet about contributing to their kids upbringing.

    • Woodduck says:

Ducks nuts if you think that there has never been false allegations on men for domestic voilence you need to pull your head out if the sand. The reason is not for child support but to gain full custody of the children, and I can guarantee you that a lot of men are paying large amounts of child support for their children, yet cannot get access to see the kids because of the false allegations causing some to commit suicide. But it looks like you have chosen to ignore this because you dislike ONP, and as far as Pauline Hansons comment goes dv is a 2 way street both men and females face abuse everyday.

      • Ducks Nuts says:

Oh you poor hard done by woodcock.
Perhaps you, and Poorleene should check some actual data first before quoting some bullshit anecdotes and going off half cocked.

        Australian data shows:

Proven false family violence allegations sit at 5–9% of cases — intentionally false claims are rare, around 1 in 20.

Research specifically tested whether DVOs are used as a custody tactic and found they’re rarely used that way; false allegations are rare, and child abuse claims often occur alongside real domestic violence.

83% of the 59,169 people charged with breaching a DV order in 2024–25 were male.

Men do experience DV, but women face intimate partner violence, especially severe and repeat violence, at much higher rates.

Separated fathers cut off from their kids are a genuine suicide risk group, but that’s a separate issue from false allegations. A father can be correctly accused, lose contact, and still be at risk, that doesn’t make the allegation false.

Child support is a contribution made by the non custodial parent to cover the basic costs of raising the child. It’s not linked to access time or decision making rights.

        • The Magpie says:

          Useful reseach.

The only stat that surprised is the (assumed) 17% of perpetrators are women, didn’t think it would be that high. But the substance of the charges would be interesting, like the socio-economic profile of this cohort, as in the percentage of 24″ Baccarat frypan as versus the K Mart/Target version forn the less affluent.

          Not arguing, just surprised..

          • Ducks Nuts says:

There’s always some Magpie. I didn’t think the percentage would be that high myself but unlike some, I do trust the research and statistics. The socio-economics is interesting and I’d assume those with baccarat frypan are unlikely to get their hands dirty and could afford to hire someone to beat the person for them. Where as those with a kmart frypan are stuck with doing it themselves.

          • The Magpie says:

Some much for the egalitarianism of the biffo classes.

        • Woodduck says:

Ducks nuts you are right violence against women by men are a lot higher but dv against men still happens so its just a bad, and should not be any less serious because the victim is male. Hence why I say its a 2 way street regardless of statistics and i beleve false allegations against men is a lot higher than statistics show. And statistics are like election polls you can believe whatever one suits your needs to prove a point.

          • The Magpie says:

Hahahaha …‘ … regardless of statistics and I believe false allegations against men is a lot higher than statistics show. And statistics are like election polls you can believe whatever one suits your needs to prove a point’.

As you have just done. RUOK?

And no one anywhere has suggested female violence against a man is any less serious, you are confusing ‘seriousness’ with ‘frequency’.

          • Ducks Nuts says:

Ah Woodcock what piffle. You’d make a fine case study for Hans Rosling. Rosling assumed better data alone would change people’s mistaken worldviews, only to find people who saw the same facts didn’t update their beliefs.

          • The Magpie says:

Hans off, so as to speak. (Work on it, workon it.)

  5. Not standing for the (pugilist) mayor says:

QLD already has a crack/ed squad for the dwarf throwing olympics with all the pint sized politicians now floating around. What is it with the LNP that they only get midgets? Phil OAM, Crisafulli, Slick Nick and others are all vertically challenged.

They are not at all the image of tall sun bronzed bushie that built this state.

    • The Magpie says:

Seems at least one of the government fat cats has more of a horizontal challenge.

Seems deputy doo dah Jarrod “Brutus’ Bleijie (that’s him on the left), once with a lean and hungry look, has been on the Russ Hinze Diet and is expanding sideways at an alarming rate.

Maybe he’s changed his mind about stabbing Crisafulli in the back, he just going to sit on him.

  6. Steve, Belgian Gardens says:

Speaking of floaters, I see that this blog has been reactivated. How wonderful.

  7. Jatzcrackers says:

I wouldn’t be to concerned about old TwoNames Thompson pontificating about his big local council planned invasion Pie !
Think of all of the future content for the Nest but surely Townsville voters aren’t that thick !!

  8. Steve Jones says:

The more attention we give him, the more people will follow him, it was better when we forgot him and moved on, he will not win, so give it no oxygen I say.

As for vertically challenged, I agree, P. Thompson, Crisafulli, Dametto, Cheisa, Jarrod, all little men with big…. Egos!

    • The Magpie says:

Don’t agree with the first sentiment, Steve. The type of coverage sleazebag Thompson gets here will not convince anybody to vote for him. And people should be reminded of who he is and who his connections are … he was yesterday’s news and fading ubtil this by-election came around.

  9. Dave Nth says:

Dear God, the parade of lacklustre candidates continues doesn’t it.

Old mr nugde nudge wink wink black ops or another arms length Chrisifulli plant. FFS.

I await with baited breath to see what is thrown up next.

As for olympics, yup intentional grammatical error. Jettison it them it will be cheaper in the long run.

My objection comes to this from the fact that there are are far too many connected snouts in the trough.

  10. Blue Bells says:

All div 1 needs is Phil to resign and we would get a clean sweep of voting twice for every level of Government this term. Voter fatigue is real.
For the record, we don’t need Phil to resign and there are no suggestions that he would.

    • The Magpie says:

Sure having to at sone stage having to vote more frequently than usual is a PITA (great acronym) but don’t quite see how mail in voting and some inherent problems with it make voting easier than turning up, grabbing a sausage and marking your X while having a natter while in line … it’s almost an Aussie sport.

Might have a beak around and later have a chat soon about the problems with MIV. And it’s not so much corruption, it’s incompetence at certain levels in a few places … but could be crucial if not rectified.

  11. Jeff, Condon says:

I like Roy and HG’s suggestion for focused suggestion to the SQLD Olympics – PIG SHOOTING. I suggest fencing off a few 5 hectare lots and populate them with a boar and three sows. Great spectator sport with advent of drones, plus CCTV. Finals could include adding a sow’s piglets, just to add some sparkle. Dead pigs would contribute to athletes mess hall hall. The suckling piglets would, of course, go to the hierarchy. Win win all round.

    • The Magpie says:

Ah, you’ve mentioned in passing another great Aussie event … fencing. The barbed wire type, not that nancy prancy stuff.

  12. Steve Jones says:

Spoke with our friends at Long Horn Tours in Charters Towers the other day, and the frustration out west is real. Imagine living in a proud country town with its own history, identity and tourism story, only to have a Townsville-based organisation paid by your council to promote your region under a broader Townsville North Queensland banner. Charters Towers deserves to be promoted as Charters Towers, not treated as an extension of Townsville. Regional communities deserve their own identity, voice and value for the money they spend.

    • The Magpie says:

Charters Towers Council has been the stand-out in questioning the effectiveness and desirability of TEL. They have actually voted on the issue at least once, but at last report, Charlie’s Trousers remain firmly belted around the bony hips of Ms BS. Anyone got an update on the situation? How much do outlying councils fork over to the Dudleys, and what do they get for it?

      • Bob says:

        Looking online I found:

While smaller regional shires like Charters Towers, Burdekin, and Hinchinbrook pay fixed regional partner rates, Townsville Enterprise’s operations are predominantly funded by its principal sponsor, the Townsville City Council, alongside major corporate backers like Townsville Airport and Ergon Energy.
The Charters Towers Regional Council contributes $25,000 annually to TEL for its core regional tourism and economic development Silver Membership. The Council also coordinates and provides ad-hoc financial contributions for targeted joint regional marketing campaigns, trade shows, and masterplans (such as the Queensland on Tour NZ campaign and the Regional Destination Tourism and Marketing Plan).

  13. Bob says:

Took some interstate mates to the island on the weekend to see the new bridge works in Nelly Bay. The Mayor, Greaney, Adam Baillie and hundreds of locals walked or drove over the bridge with sausage sizzle in hand, happy the main road has re-opened at last. Afterwards, we went to the Forts and followed some backpackers past the Main Roads signs down the hundreds of steps to Florence Bay and discovered Adam Baillie’s Radical Bay road renovation passing through. There’s some serious concrete and stone works going on there and a stack of what must be imported road making material which looks and feels like aggregate mixed with cement and rolled onto the reconditioned surface. Must be costing a fortune and opens straight onto the vacant resort land at the bay. You won’t have to worry about 4WD. It should be a very easy tourist destination even for your old Corolla.

    • Maggie Whinge Alot says:

      Well Bob,
the bridge was closed 48 hours after the big celebration. Apparently works will continue for a few more weeks.
Official opening late September. The bridge estimates began at $7.4 Million final cost over $20 million- but who is counting – not council – project fully funded by State & Federal ADF.

When Baillie announced restoration of Radical Bay road, Ma Greaney said ‘you give us the money and we will use it on another project ‘ . Major Matt estimated restoration of the road in councils hands would be about $30 million.
Hence state flicked council The Bird.
Road Tek will deliver quality work, ahead of time and with in budget.
      Something unheard of in TCC!

      • Bob says:

Road Tek has a budget for the Radical Bay road? Care to elaborate?

      • Alahazbin says:

        Maggie WA
“Something unheard of at TCC” with reference to going under budget. The last time they performed that trick was the Blakeys Crossing upgrade. $70,000 actually. Heard of nothing since. How many years ago was that?

      • The Magpie says:

What?!? What species of agenda hiding bullshit is this?
“Road Tek will deliver quality work, ahead of time and with in budget.

‘Will deliver’? care to share just how you can make such a definitive statement AHEAD OF TIME?

Sounds like biased spin to The ‘Pie, what’s your stake in this?

        • Bob says:

According to their website RoadTek is a commercial business within the Department of Transport and Main Roads. RoadTek specialises in delivering difficult, hard-to-scope, high risk and short-lead-time projects.
The Radical Bay road reopening is an election promise not a budget item. It will be C-in-C, MYOB, go jump in the lake.

          • The Magpie says:

Why is this publicly funded project C-in-C? Are you stating a fact? Because it does not meet any of the thresholds demanded to be deemed not fit for public consumption. It’s our bloody money.

          • Maggie Moggie says:

            Bob,
It was stated at a MIRRA meeting a figure of $6 million was secured for the road.
So it is not C in C as you claim.
Further funding was needed after the big washout which cut the road in two between Radical Bay and Florence Bay, the weather event Dec 24/Jan 25. On the media release there was an Australian Govt logo which would indicate some fed funding – throught ADRF.
The road had become so dangerous for our emegency services personell and their vehicles.
You can try and play politics all you like but the majority of islanders are very happy the road will open and safe for everyone.

As for the freehold property that is a matter for the owner, he is a ratepayer too!

          • Maggie Moggie says:

I also got a quote from a road maker friend of mine who knows the road well:

The Radical Bay road is 3011m long exactly.

Gravel – Option A – “B” grade road includes grading the existing road and storm water improvement and minor repairs to culverts with a combination of asphalt and spray seal surfaces
The cost is approximately $3 million with a duration of works 6 months.

Asphalt – Option B – “A” grade road includes full asphalt surface replacement of sections of failing sub grade gravel (underneath surface) to form a good base. Better storm water drainage including head walls, replacement of all
damaged or end of life culverts including head walls for them. The cost is approximately $7 million dollars with a duration of works 12 months.

Please note engineers specifies the scope of work and the detail. There may be a change to pricing depend on the specifications required by them.

          • Bob says:

Whatever MIRRA is it is not a source of government budget statements. As far as I can see there is no public statement about the business case or costing for the current works on the Radical Bay road and I don’t expect RoadTek to reveal anything – in fact, surely that is why the government has engaged them? MM, your ‘roadmaker’ friend might have a clue but it doesn’t seem to apply. On my personal observation there doesn’t seem to be any asphalt so neither ‘B’ grade or ‘A’ grade job is being done. I have no idea what the Australian government logo has to do with it. It’s a Queensland political project isn’t it? Perhaps you could ask Mr Baillie about that.

          • The Magpie says:

            Whhhaaat???
“I don’t expect RoadTek to reveal anything – in fact, surely that is why the government has engaged them?”

That essentially means the government is paying themselves to do the work, but at a profit. RoadTek is a DOT commercial department. Which is all the more reason the money should be revealed and accounted for.

And just how the hell does this work (genuine question – anybody? Because on the face of it, the DOT gets quotes in then chooses the quote from its own internal ‘commercial’ entity … an entity bankrolled by … itself.

And this is surely challengeable through the Fair Trading mob or some other watchdog.

Seriously, unless The ‘Pie has seriously missed something here, THIS IS SCANDALOUS.

          • The Magpie says:

Wonder if RoadTek was involved in the disgraceful foot dragging fucktangle of fixing the Paluma road.

          • Bob says:

Government avoids scandals by not operating in the way you describe. Case in point the Sooning Street bridge. First guess budget $7.4m before they even knew what they would build. Final cost north of $18m. No one blinked.
RoadTek is buried somewhere in TMR amongst an annual budget of:
“Operating Budget: $9.120 billion to manage everyday network operations and services.Capital Budget: $6.228 billion dedicated to infrastructure delivery.”
They won’t assign a public servant to itemise the utilisation of individual assets to this or that daily operation – especially if the minister specifically does not want (you) to know. Hence MYOB.

          • The Magpie says:

The word ‘commercial’ in the description then becomes even more interesting.

But a point if you can clarify Bob …the Sooning Street Bridge and the Radical Bay Road were then not put out for tender to private contractors?

          • Bob says:

No idea. Tenders for roadworks are so last century. Best not to put a price on anything if you can avoid it, especially if, as in the Radical Bay instance with a complete lack of a business case, there are numerous questions arising about ultimate beneficiaries.

          • The Magpie says:

Been trying to work out what you’re trying to say, without actually saying it.

First, why is a ‘business case’ needed for public money to be spend on access for the public to a much loved beach which attracts locals and visitors alike. That is one reason why we pay taxes.

But The ‘Pie hasn’t missed the dog whistle that you believe the Juniper Group will be getting an unfair advantage when they build on their land which can now be accessed by the road. The Juniper people previously refused to foot any of the bill for the repaired road.

Ignoring the obvious answer … to wit, so fucking what? … that judgement ignores requirements that may be imposed during the approval process by the TCC … which is a council that dances to Brisbane’s tune, and Brisbane may want some of its money back from the developer. Even if that doesn’t happen, the prosed development will attract tourists to the island, the development will create jobs, and the development will use local suppliers.

          • Bob says:

Dog whistle? A few weeks ago Adam Baillie was bagging TCC for failing to provide basic business cases for various projects it had wanted funding for in the recent Queensland Budget. The local member specifically stated:

“The Crisafulli Government is still waiting on formal business cases from the Townsville City Council on the Strand and Rockpool, the Haughton . . . .”
“We need those business cases so we can make investment decisions.”

Now I concede that perhaps the Radical Bay road re-opening was never in the category of an “investment decision” at all as there is no obvious consequential economic benefit. It is pure political theatre. Therefore, I suppose we have to accept that it does not require any detail as to what exactly is proposed, any tender process or public disclosure of costs and it is irrelevant that the (presumed) millions being spent on it could or would have been better invested in other Maggie Island infrastructure – such as the underperforming sewerage treatment capacity which is actually holding up real economic development. Admittedly, State Development does not have an in-house ShiteTek for that purpose but if the state now decides to gazette the Radical Bay road as a formal local government Road Reserve then the insult will be turned into injury for both taxpayers and ratepayers.

          • The Magpie says:

Boy, you sure have a fire ant up your twirl, Bob, that is the biggest load of irrelevant, sidestepping claptrap imaginable.

So, just one question concerning your weird addled-headed confusion between ‘business cases’ and ‘public works’. If Castle Hill Road is closed by a landslide, will you demand a business case demonstrating economic benefit before repair funds can obtained? If no, then explain the difference between that and the Radical Bay Road. (If yes, let the fun begin.)

Bob, you are proving to be a classic example of Oscar Wilde’s definition of a cynic .. someone who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.

          • Bob says:

Interesting about face. Five minutes ago you were up in all caps outrage:

“ Seriously, unless The ‘Pie has seriously missed something here, THIS IS SCANDALOUS.”

          • Bob says:

Further, FYI, Castle Hill Road (with a capital R) is a gazetted Council ‘street’. TCC is obliged to keep it open and make good any damage or obstruction. They may even be eligible for disaster assistance if necessary. As I understand it from reading publicly available information, the old track on USL to Radical Bay is not on national park land, is not gazetted, is nothing to do with local government at all and no level of government is legally OBLIGED to do anything with it. The state government has chosen, on a political whim, to spend public funds on it with no explanation except that it seemed like a good idea at the time.

          • The Magpie says:

            So what?

        • Maggie Whinge Alot says:

Rest assured Mr. Magpie the only stake I have in this, is I live on the island.
Main Roads works notice stated job start 1st July till 1st November
This week they are working on the Arthur Bay section, which is the third stage. Next will be signage.
The restoration of the Radical Bay was a Crissafulli Govt election promise and they have funds allocated for it.
Bob has already stated what he believes the road making material is and seems impressed by the reconditioned surface.

So to me it looks like quality work and ahead of time and with budget.

          • The Magpie says:

The ‘Pie’s point exactly … ‘looks to me like’ is purely opinion, so your definitive positive statement had to be questioned. It’s our money you’re talking about.

  14. OED says:

Good to see Adam Baillie attending a bash on Magnetic Island that he’s willing to speak to the press about.

    • Jonty says:

Very unusual. Baillee, by nature, is a gutless turd. He normally sticks to written scripts, pre-approved questions, and keeps silent like a little child. A sudden rush of testosterone must have kicked in. Very strange.

      • The Magpie says:

Jonty!!! Where have you been? We’ve so missed you, and your insights.

        • Jonty says:

I’ve been very busy. Someone informed me that the Magpie was again chirping, and sure enough, you are back. I look forward to your articles and insights.

    • Jeff, Condon says:

Ha, ha, ha, great play on words, attending a “bash”. Was Dametto there?

  15. One-legged tap dancer says:

For those moaning about Thompson trying to return to the snout trough, it could be worse.
Les “Wet paper bag” Walker could also try to get back on the gravy train.

    • The Magpie says:

Walker isn’t a criminal, he just got a glass jaw for pub fights, an activity apparently favoured by some in Walker Street.

  16. Not standing for (the pugilist) Mayor says:

Well there you go. Michelle Hobson the daughter of developer and builder Rick has put her hand up as a candidate for TCC Division One. She is as well qualified as any of the others because she seems to have no criminal convictions or CCC investigations and definitely has the best figure. I was going to say best tits but decided that was not very PC.

    • The Magpie says:

Just as well you didn’t say it, The ‘Pie would not have published it. Standards, my man, standards, by gad!!

    • Steve Jones says:

Pugh may well be difficult to beat, but I’m more interested in who will genuinely represent Division 1 independently. I have concerns about candidates like Hopson already closely connected to established business, advocacy and political networks around Townsville. We have enough of that influence already.

The young bloke, Shayne Blacklock is worth a closer look. A teacher, a local, and seemingly without the same established ties. Thompson won’t run, and Kuene will just wave the red flag. Young Jai from the change team may put his hand up, either way with as many as 5 candidates the votes will be diluted.

  17. The Magpie says:

THE DAILY ASTONISHER’S COCK-UP DU JOUR:

Always a pleasure to see the paper in touch with the community it is ‘all for’.

That would be Belrowes in the headline, wouldn’t it?

The ‘Pie went through all the contortions sometimes necessary to work out what the hell the pun, joke and hidden message may be in the Bulletin’s unique understanding of English, but one can only conclude this is the latest prominent fuck-up. So much for iditor Jill Poulson’s recent mea culpa over previous monumental incompetences and promise that ‘we must do better’.

  18. Prince Rollmop says:

    From the Dudley do-nothings yesterday;

“Townsville Enterprise welcomed Queensland Opposition Leader Steven Miles MP and Shadow Treasurer Shannon Fentiman MP to our Budget Reply Event, bringing together business and community leaders to discuss Labor’s response to the 2026–27 Queensland Budget and what it means for Townsville North Queensland”.

This dribble was accompanied by photos of Ms Bumme-smith with Fentanyl and Smiley. Another day for Claudia, another photo op, and another meaningless event promoted by the Dudley’s.

  19. Steve Jones says:

Magpie, I was at Walker Street yesterday discussing a local road issue and asked about the Mayor’s Magnetic Island altercation. The conversation was shut down immediately and the meeting was effectively over. My understanding is the incident involved Mayor Dametto, a State Government staffer and a Channel 7 reporter who was present. Words were exchanged and a physical altercation allegedly followed. There were witnesses, it was reported to police, referred to the OIA and the CCC involvement has been confirmed.

The Bulletin has largely portrayed it as a minor “barney” and comments were switched off. Whatever the eventual findings, an alleged physical altercation involving a sitting Mayor is clearly a matter of public interest. It deserves transparency and the same scrutiny and conduct standards expected of every elected representative.

    • The Magpie says:

Yes. The ‘Pie suspects the truth lies somewhere between the stance of supporters – ‘move along, nothing to see here’ – and opponents ‘off with his head’.

But such an incident cannot be ignored involving either directly or indirectly, elected local and sgate government representatives … the law actually takes a dim view of such carry on. And now you say the media was involved? Funny as far as The ‘Pie knows, the reporter has reported nothing. The entire management of Townsville’s media contingent, with very rare exceptions, are either timid or bought.

      • Steve Jones says:

        Section 175:
Breach of the “Oath of Office”Upon election, all Queensland councillors must take a statutory declaration (an Oath of Office) under Section 169 to faithfully and impartially fulfill the duties of the office. Violating this by physically striking a constituent is a legal breach of their official statutory pledge

        • The Magpie says:

Not sure if that last line is the legislation or yours, Steve.

But a councillor hitting anybody constituent, fellow councillor, whoever, is off the table (and not under it). And they should be bounced.

          • Steve Jones says:

This needs to be dealt with properly. The silence around it is starting to stink of a cover-up. A Queensland Government staffer was assaulted, with a Channel 7 reporter present who was in a relationship with the Mayor. We’ve also seen the Mayor’s temper publicly, including his recent snap at reporters in the chamber. Accountability can’t depend on who’s sitting in the chair. Bring back Les Tyrell!

          • The Magpie says:

Oh, Steve, have you no faith in the investigative reporters of the Astonisher, who are all for us? You old cynic, you.

Perhaps Slick Nick’s short temper is a hangover from his days apparently indulging in, as well as (possibly illegally) dealing in steroids. The CCC has been sniffing around.

  20. Let me be clear says:

The Facebook page “ Townsvillians blocked by Troy Thompson” has recently been reactivated. A great page for a few good laughs. But they also expose every one of Troy’s social media comments, they dissect them, then make comment on them. It’s great to see someone else is also exposing the fake Mayor for who he really is.

  21. Ducks Nuts says:

Compared to previous Townsville Mayors, I think Nick is doing a great job. He actually spends time doing Mayoral duties rather than swanning about drinking chai latte’s and eating kale salads. And although I don’t have much time for Jenny Hill, I still don’t think she was as bad as Mooney.

    • Ducks Nuts says:

Hey magpie… some silly bugger is trying this shit again this isn’t me. Apparently some people have nothing better to do with their lives, what poor sad creatures must be.

And its been so long I forgot what my secret phrase was.

      • The Magpie says:

Mate this is all harder than Chinese arithmetic.

The ‘Pie now has to decide if you are an imposter posing as DN and getting further grip the purloined moniker with a password, or you are the real DN with a faulty memory.

Too hard, fuckit, I’m off to the pub. But ou cAn always email in.

  22. OED says:

Andrew McKaysmith manages to stuff up a quote in his story today about the Svensson Road project, by eliding a crucial element and thus completely inverting the meaning of what Bleijie was trying to say:

“In less than 18 months, the Crisafulli Government has unlocked more than 141,000 new places to call home … which saw housing lot approvals slump by 29 per cent, leading to record-low rental vacancy rates, a skyrocketing social housing waitlist and the lowest home ownership rate in the country,” Mr Bleijie said.

    • The Magpie says:

Damn, beat me into print, OED. Pondered that myself, especially the use of the ellipsis (the three dots) used to indicate some words have been removed. Ellipses are used to shorten lengthy sentences but always done in a way that the missing words are understood from context. But enough Magpie, you old tease, you’re doing in the heads in the newsroom trying to work out what the fuck you’re talking about. So here is the story and the sloppy subbing.

  23. Blue Bells says:

Access to Paluma continues to be hysterical. Originally there were 8 sets of traffic lights, but the public couldn’t be trusted to obey and not stop on the range at places other than the lights. Now they have vehicle escorts every hour on the hour both from the top and also the bottom. One escort at the front of the convoy, and one at the back to make sure no one stops. 4 escorts driving the range all day long, plus the staff at the bottom and top recording number plates etc.
In total at least 8 people managing the public from 6-6. Be nice to have money to burn like that.

  24. Tripod says:

Slick Demented was pretty fired up about Albanese cutting disaster funding. C’mon Slick, priorities mate. Albo has to spend up big on dud submarines ($370b), voice to parliament referendum ($400m), and a host of other shit that’s pushing our national debt towards $1trillion. Scraping a few million off of our disaster funding is going to help him out heaps! Don’t be selfish Slick.

    • Steve Jones says:

“Slick” seems to fit. He certainly enjoys the camera, but leadership is about results, not media appearances. To me, he’s a small man with a big ego who mistakes publicity for performance. If the recent conduct concerns that have been publicly reported are properly investigated and substantiated, then accountability should follow. Public office is a privilege, not a personality contest, you can’t go around thumping people, not in that role.
